Indie Pop powerhouse Yoke Lore releases new EP at Baby’s All Right on 7.07

Posted on:

Yoke Lore’s newest EP Goodpain is a triumph of "indie pop persuasion." In a genre cluttered with cookie cutter synths, bubblegum lyrics, and insincerely grandiose choruses, Yoke Lore’s work sets itself apart with its concision. Restraint is the virtue of good music production, and the Brooklyn based artist demonstrates to be familiar with the concept, giving the listener space to "breathe," while still creating memorable tunes enveloped in a charming, abstract aura. His voice soothes, surprises, and soars on this project, showing his range as a songwriter and as an artist. After a series of well received singles, Yoke Lore will be kicking off a summer tour with his EP release show at Baby’s All Right on July 7th. – Lilly Milman, photography by Wes Santos & Alex Gomez

New Track: “Don’t Stop” – MC Knowledge

Posted on:

MC Knowledge does not hide his admiration for Big Daddy Kane’s sense of style on the cover of his new full-length album Know The Ledge. The smooth-flowin’, Philly emcee, with the propensity for the ladies, obviously embraces the old school ways. Intermingling laid-back jazz accents with boom-bap rhythms, "Don’t Stop" teases our FOMO instincts, making us long for another evening that we’ll never forget (if only we could remember).

Huck brings playful soul-pop to BK Bazaar on 07.30

Posted on:

Playfulness takes center stage with Brooklyn-based four-piece Huck. The semi-electronic band provides a perfect soundtrack for summer, whether you’re cruising down the highway or sitting by the pool. Their single “Without You” (streaming below) takes cues from 8-bit music with its vintage video game sounds, while the arrangement in their other track available for streaming, “Summer Lovin’,” develops in a more linear and soulful way. Their quality songwriting and playful approach solidify them as a New York City artist to watch. – Lilly Milman

New Music Video: “For The Year” – Work Drugs

Posted on:

Never ones to shy from providing rad visuals with their single releases, Work Drugs reflects on a truly unforgettable 2016 in their latest video for "For The Year". Though the "smooth-fi" crew shares that the reflection is an homage to their fallen music heroes like David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, and Prince, you can’t help but be moved by the many reminders of the tumultuous world that we currently live in now. The stunning, powerful images were created by Carlos Waters, Dion Lee, and Joe Posner, who were originally commissioned by Vox, and the track can be found on the band’s forthcoming album Flaunt the Imperfect. "Enjoy and remember the good old days weren’t always good and tomorrow ain’t as bad as it seems."

PREMIERE: A Volcano – “Spooky”

A duo befitting of their name, A Volcano execute a sound that’s explosive, eternal and impactful. Distinctly but appropriately defined "cave noise," Johnny Brooke and Jesse Chambers echo a harsh and piercing experimental sludge that while jarring at first is completely accessible and near addicting. That same feeling carries over to their new music video for their track "Spooky," where the style of it is something you’ll want to watch over and over again.

"The name ‘Spooky’ came from the chorus riff, I guess. It was the spookiest, most evil riff we’d written at the time," says Brooke, the guitarist and vocalist for the band. According to Brooke, the track’s name also partially came from the two falling into a hole of watching X-Files and Chambers asking if was "time to get spooky" (which Chambers can be heard screaming at the beginning and end of the song).

As for the video, the idea for the concept and the process came from illustrator Nate Sonenfeld who also did the artwork for one of their tapes. Sonenfeld filmed at least two versions of Brooke and Chambers performing in their practice space, layered the images over one another and then rotoscoped nearly 1,600 separate frames to give the video the look. "This is why the video looks so nuts," Brooke says. "And Nate’s nuts, too."

Hot Flash Heat Wave have bizarre music video for “San Fransisco Dating Life”, new LP out now

Posted on:

Dating shows, hot dogs, and hook-ups while covered in neon slime: that’s what you’ll see in Hot Flash Heat Wave‘s hilarious new music video. Aside from the absurdities, HFHW seems to be offering a more delicate, yet mature sound on "San Fransisco Dating Life", the middle track off of their newest album, Soaked, released June 2nd. Distancing themselves from some of the garage/surf-punk elements off of their previous work, this song has a crisper, more soothing sound–it’s an unmistakable transition from their "Wavves-esque" material towards an indie pop presence. "San Fransisco Dating Life" is reminiscent of San Cisco (and one might even notice the similarities to Portugal. the Man on Soaked’s second track, "Raindrop") proving the quartet possesses a wide range of sounds and influences, refusing to stay in one lane. Hot Flash Heat Wave will be wrapping up their tour on June 30th, but be sure to check out their newest record and to keep an eye out for future shows.-Pearse Devlin

Posted on:

The end of July will be an exciting time for Moonrise Nation, with the release of their debut LP, Glamour Child, coinciding with their show at Schubas Tavern in the band’s hometown of Chicago. The trio possesses an impressive blend of indie, folk, and pop, and delivers their sound in a highly harmonic fashion. “Demo Day”, their latest single, begins with mellow indie guitar plucking, lifting itself up through vocal harmonics into a faster paced sound reminiscent of the alt-rock outfit Sleeper Agent. With introspective and personal lyrics, accompanied by well-placed piano and percussion, and even creative album artwork, the band has left a lot to anticipate. Check out their release show on July 28th , and be sure to check out their newest material and upcoming shows. – Pearse Devlin

From the digital submissions: Agouti psych-pop single, “Chameleon”

Posted on:

Agouti, a self-described "DIY psych" band fronted by Carmen Caruso, has released a new single entitled "Chameleon." An intriguing blend of Euro-rock influences ranging from Portishead and the Cranberries to hints of early Radiohead, "Chameleon" is a coolly melancholic dirge that laments existing in one’s own skin and illustrates a longing for disassociation. New Track: “Distractions” – Somnium Mori

Posted on:

The post-punk quartet of Somnium Mori recently shared its debut EP 2017. Its closing track, “Distractions,” percolates with a buzzsaw-ringing backend and chasing sense of urgency. Things momentarily cool as screeching screams of guitar and the prodding thump of bass/drums allow the vocals to collect their thoughts. Then, the hunt resumes.

New Sandcastle EP Available for Streaming & Download

A damp dreariness meshes with soothsayer, psych guidance on Blackberry Wine, the freshly hatched EP from Sandcastle. Distant vocals mystically beckon. Enchantingly drawn closer, one fights the urge to fall under the musical spell, remaining alert and on guard. Tinged in lovely loneliness, the journey is a relaxing requiem.

PREMIERE: Rugby – “Treasure Racer”

Posted on:

Back in April of last year, we shared a video from the experimental pop outfit Rugby called "Bag of Bones." The romantic, black and white video was the second to come off their full length Worldly Wise, but now we’re presenting you with their third.

"Treasure Racer" is the opposite of Rugby’s former video, aesthetically. Beautifully hued pastels, animation and dance scenes accent the duo’s playfully poppy, upbeat tune. The video was filmed in a documentary style by Rugby themselves, incorporating footage from a family vacation of theirs at the Outer Banks. As for the track, "Treasure Racer" is based off a poem by one of the members, where the scuba diver from the ’90s computer game Treasure Cove goes on an ocean adventure with the cartoon Speed Racer.

The whole "Treasure Racer" package is fun, lighthearted and perfect for summer. View the new video below.
