Weekend Warrior, April 21 – 23

Posted on:

Rowdy, restless, riff-charged Dark Web tied us in with their self-titled album (The Deli Philly’s April Record of the Month). This Saturday, their nonstop sewer punk sounds serve as the primer for a Record Store Day lineup at Repo Records that doesn’t quit. The stampeding, snarling, punk anthems of Posers enter the fray, while a fire-breathing, raw-rock fury explodes from the down and dirty exploits of Residuels. The murky, mystic, synth-laced, darkwave of Remote Control will dial you in, and sticky, psych grooves and sweltering exploratory guitar runs set off the closing solo set from Purling Hiss

As the day dwindles down, Eris Temple Arts will host the release show for chamber-folk ensemble On the Water’s new EP Superposition. Whether dashing forward in exuberant rock or swaying in reflective melodies, Dominic resonates. Potentially showcasing material from their forthcoming album Burn Bridges, Burn Pies, the Mad-Hattered, quirky concoctions of OhBree is on the slate, as are the adventurous-eclectic instrumentation merged with captivating songwriting of Dear Rabbit. The duo of Baby & Shylow, which features Aleks Martray (Grandchildren), kicks off the proceedings. – Michael Colavita

Pleasure Prince bring their sensual synth pop to Don Pedro’s on 4/22

Posted on:

“When that synth hits you just right” is the descriptive tagline Brooklyn duo Pleasure Prince displays on their Instagram account.  That is certainly a fitting description for a sound that weaves pulsating keys with an emotionally soulful pop vocal sensibility. On their slow groove track "You Look Good To Me" (streaming below) a mood of heightened sensual attraction pervades the soundscape, as hooky synth lines and electronic percussion take hold.  Other tracks like “Lines for George” feature reverberated female vocals that echo the sweetness and retro-futuristic sci-fi edge of the much beloved Broadcast.  However “Evening Queen” surprises by removing the synths, allowing the lushly produced alternating male and female vocals to take center stage.  Pleasure Prince play next on 4/22 at Don Pedro. – Dave Cromwell

Meklit Performs at Rickshaw Stop on May 6th

Posted on:

The Ethiopian-born, Oakland-based artist Meklit will perform at Rickshaw Stop on May 6th!

Combining Ethiopian jazz influences with soul and pop, Meklit’s music melds complex rhythms with vibrant melodies. Her new album When the People Move, the Music Moves Too will be released on June 23rd through Six Degrees Records, and was produced by multi-grammy winning artist Dan Wilson of Semisonic (Adele, John Legend) and features Andrew Bird as well as the Preservation Hall Jazz Band horns on several tracks.

When the People Move, the Music Moves Too is the result of a fateful encounter Meklit experienced in Addis Ababa with the legendary vibraphonist/composer Mulatu Astatke, who helped spark Ethiopia’s 1960s musical renaissance. She was deeply engaged with his music at the time, but he pushed her to think about how to bring her own experiences into her songs – “He was very pointed with me, saying several times ‘You keep innovating!’” she recalls. “He took me to task and he tasked me. It took me a while to digest that. It’s a big thing to have someone like that say that to you. I sat with it for a couple of years.”

New Music Video: “One Shot” – Rockers Galore

Posted on:

For the past five years, Blayer Point-du-jour and the Rockers Galore have journeyed back and forth between Philadelphia and the Dominican Republic to hone and craft their new material in preparation for their sophomore full-length album, Cultivation. In a lot of ways, the new music video for their latest single, “One Shot,” is the perfect montage of the journey that led up to the album. While the footage predominately features the band jamming in one of the many studios that Cultivation was developed in (complete with dancing with members from Peek-A-Boo Revue), it segues to various backdrops of the band members journeying through Philly’s waterfront and tropical destinations. Add it all up, and it plays out to be a joyous prelude to tomorrow night’s album release celebration at MilkBoy.

The Undercurrent Releases New Music Video – Waves

Posted on:

The San Francisco based band, The Undercurrent, has released a new music video for their first single, Waves, from their upcoming EP. The song and video embody the band’s soulful, indie pop sound with a distinctive California vibe. This new Bay Area duo cleverly combines driving beats, layered guitar riffs, and distinctive melodies, by tying them all together with heartfelt lyrics. The Undercurrent is currently working on their first EP, Lost in the Haze, expected to be released Fall 2017.

As a multi-instrumentalist and producer, Paul is able to both craft and record complex guitar parts, compelling bass lines, and dynamic drum beats, whilst maintaining a keen ear for detail and balance. Wendy’s expressive and soulful voice spans.

Buzz Alert! Ageless brings world big beat to Rough Trade and The Knit within a week

Posted on:

If you ever played in a band, you must be familiar with the "two weeks rule" requested by live venues (often extended to a month), and consisting in asking artists to abstain from playing any other shows within 14 days of the one already booked. Well, that’s obviously something that doesn’t concern NYC’s electronic project Ageless, since it’s scheduled to perform live at both Rough Trade and The Knit within eight days (04.28 and 05.06, respectively). Considering those rooms aren’t exactly small, this fact, alone, earns the one man band a "NYC Buzz Alert." The brainchild of NY native Wes Paioff, Ageless concocts danceable electronic music reminiscent of the UK’s big beat of the ’90s (think Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim) but dressed with hip hop, soul and a million other influences (including, in new album ‘Perfect World,’ afrobeat and ragamuffin). No wonder he states in his bio: "At some point I started producing music exactly as it’s always sounded in my head. Not bound to any specific Genre, but influenced by many genres." If we were you, we’d check out one of those two dates.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best electronic songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

PREMIERE: Keeper Keeper – “Sticky Bomb”

Posted on:

Fun loving alternative surf trio Keeper Keeper are coming out with a brand new EP in a couple of days, and today they’re sharing a new track to go along with it.

"Sticky Bomb" is the second song from their upcoming Paradigm EP. The track boasts an excitable, beach-cowboy feel while being a mixture between a song of love and a song of lust. About the song, the band share that "’Sticky Bomb’ is an ode to one sexy creature named Anna with a firecracker tattooed on her perfect ass!" Fun and fiery, this track and "White Bear," the first to be released, give good insight into what the rest of the Paradigm EP sounds like.

Keeper Keeper is having their release show for the new mini collection of songs this Saturday at Kelly’s Olympian. Playing with them will be Mobilities, Salo Panto and Low Flyer. Snag tickets to the show for just $5 so you can catch them before they hit the road next month on a tour in support of the EP.

In case you haven’t felt like the Sixties have returned in some way, perhaps Detroit-raised and NYC-based Blaire Alise & The Bombshells can change your mind. The 20-year-old mod-pop artist and her band will bring their brand of garage pop nostalgia to Trans Pecos in Ridgewood on May 4th to promote their new album, My Eye. Other acts on the bill include fellow dreamy acts Gold Child and The Cutouts, as well as a DJ set by production duo Discochic.

Goodbye June Releases “Fear of Jesus” Ahead of New Album

Posted on:

Goodbye June’s newest single “Fear of Jesus” is a nostalgic reflection on childhood and the progression of identity. It’s a number that glides along at an easy pace, glistening guitars creating an entire atmosphere around its shuffle drums. The band being originally formed after the death of lead guitarist Tyler Baker’s brother, the song reminisces about the group’s early religious upbringing: “I used to fear Jesus back then, and Momma used to hold my hand / and now I just run” Landon Milbourn croons in the chorus, comparing potentially destructive new coping methods to old ones. The group’s forthcoming album, Magic Valley, is set to be their most passionate effort yet. Be sure to make it to their release show on May 5th at The Basement East.

New Night Sins LP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

Night Sins will be releasing a new album, entitled Dancing Chrome, on May 19 via Funeral Party, but you can stream the release in its entirety over at Post-Punk. Kyle Kimball (Nothing) produces dire, danceable darkwave. Sinister baritone vocals bellow as percussion and synth ominously illuminate the ground below one’s feet. It’s dangerously designed to negotiate moving a gathering to the dance floor.

Moonray Teases New Release with “Hand of Queens”

Posted on:

The synthpop flame has flickered recently, signalling a decline of dance-centric synth artists that straddle the line of indie rock and electronica. However there are some out there still holding true – Moonray is Jonray and Barb, an alternative duo/couple that emits positive messages through 80’s influenced beats, intimate vocals and, buliding choruses. Moonray derives from a dark place that is used as the music’s bedrock, but the songs themselves are beams of light proving resilient and victorious simultaenously. A curious balance of humbleness and grandiosity makes their music heartfelt and enervating simultaneously. Moonray released their debut EP Freedom From The Realm in 2014 and is expecting to follow it up with Digital Moon this Summer in 2017. Check out "Hand of Queens"  off of their upcoming album.
