The Deli’s Best Emerging Philly Indie Pop Artist: Louie Louie!

Posted on:

The Indie Pop category was definitely stacked this year, and after compiling the jurors’, readers’/fans’ and writers’ votes, congratulations go out to Louie Louie! The stylish garage-pop sisterhood has been working hard and steadily building on their artistic vision, causing many in the Philly music community to take noticed. Led by Emily Robb (Lantern, Myrrias) on guitar/vox and joined by Jenna Robb on drums/vox, Emily Eichelberger on bass/vox, and Leslie Burnette on organ/vox, the band harkens back to the golden age of girl groups that produced legendary acts like The Ronettes and The Shangri-Las; however, the ladies put their own surf-psych spin on the classic sound. Louie Louie just celebrated the release of its full-length album, Friend Of A Stranger (Born Losers Records), with a packed performance this past Friday at PhilaMOCA, and will be spending the rest of the month into March on the road in support of their first LP.

We are also happy to see and share that runner-up honors go out to Mercury Girls, which features members of Literature, Pet Milk, and Little Big League. They released their debut 7" last year via highly respected indie-pop label Slumberland. And Queen Jeans, who placed third overall in our poll last year, continue to be on the minds of our voters with their recent honorable mention performance. Check out the latest releases from all these fine bands below!

Debut Fabergégé Album Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

With bubbly synth-pop coasting in a steady calm matriculation, Fabergégé’s self-titled debut album never stops. Featuring Thom Lessner (Sweatheart), Dave Pap, Kelly Karavalis, and Pat Finnerty, the band finds a solid, mid-tempo pace, cruising along in consistent, low-pressure circumstances. It’s a joyously, fun collection, offering lyrical tongue-twisters that bounce with a bright, pop hue. Hopefully it will help to push you through any midweek lulls.

Best of SF: Mall Walk wins Indie Rock/Pop overall poll (Readers + Jurors)

Posted on:

Our selected jurors and The Deli Magazine readers have spoken! The Oakland based band, Mall Walk have officially won The Deli SF Artist of the Year Composite Chart (readers+jurors) Poll for the Indie Rock/Pop Category!

I know that sounds like a mouthful, but it just means it’s the chart that considers both the votes of our jury of "local scene experts" (who nominated all the bands in the list) AND our readers! These guys are acutally a personal fave band of mine.

Congratulations to this talented band of beings. Well done and Godspeed! Enjoy this victory! Soak it in!

The Deli’s Best Emerging NYC Indie Pop Artists: Ex Reyes, Zuli, Sam Evian, Surf Rock is Dead + 10 more!

Posted on:

Here’s a recap of our Best of NYC Indie Pop Poll, which ended last Friday and highlighted some truly talented emerging locals.

We already celebrated Zuli, winner of the Readers’ Poll, here

Ex Reyes, the project of New Orleans songwriter Mikey Freedom Hart, was the winner of the overall chart (and therefore of the "Best of NYC" title for this category – this chart adds to the readers’ votes the points cast by our scene "experts," who nominated all the artists in the list). Rather impressively, this band has been consistently churning out quality, extremely sophisticated, soulful and somewhat loungy tracks that reveal the rich musical background of its singer/songwriter and the city he hails from. Check out the video for their break out single "Bad Timing" below.

Other artists who did really well in the poll are Sam Evian (same juror score as Ex Reyes, less readers votes), Surf Rock is Dead (3rd place overall and 2nd in the Readers’ Poll), and Plastic Picnic (3rd in the Readers’ Poll) – check out their tracks, streaming below.

New Haunted Homes Single Release Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

The new single release, "CoastGhost2Coast"/"Spooksville, USA," from Haunted Homes, stirs up the strange. The former eerily traverses desolate country terrain as one becomes conscious of the sounds that creep in the shadows. The latter bristles in a pleasant steady backend-anchored stroll, despite its lyrical nod to temporary existence. The quintet has a knack for rattling one’s thoughts in a memorable "cowboy wandering the cosmos" manner. You can catch them at Ortlieb’s on Friday, February 24 with Perfeckt Touch, Davey and the Chains, and Power Mystery.

FRTNK releases new video for “Let Go”

Posted on:

FRTNK (pronounced Fourteen K) released a new music video for their single, “Let Go”. This up and coming alternative hip-hop group, made up of Benjamin Aragbaye, Bryan Ramos and Barin Butler, collaborated with director Aaron George to help create this cinematically pleasing video. FRTNK, artistic and free spirited, wanted their video to be interpreted by their audience. In the majority of the video, the lead character keeps a sack over his face, leading me to believe that the bag is symbolic. With “Let Go” as the title, and with the flow of the video, people might suspect it is about letting go of a loved one, but here I think it is about letting go of what holds you back. Him taking the bag off at the end means that he is ready to, literally and figuratively, let go of what has been holding him back. You can now experience the art of “Let Go” by viewing the video below. – Kayla Hay

Portland’s Best in Indie Rock/Post-Punk for 2017: Lithics and The Toads

As we come to the close of another round of genre polling, this one sees an interesting pair of categories mashing up together in voting. Thinking of indie rock and post-punk in the same light is weird enough, but what isn’t strange is who all of you chose as the winners. We’re pleased to present you with the best in indie rock and post-punk for 2017: Lithics and The Toads.

Lithics are the winners of our overall poll, with much love given to them from our anonymous jurors. They dropped Borrowed Floors last year, along with playing a series of shows throughout the year that made a lasting impression on many of our poll participants. One of their first shows of 2017 will be this Friday with Sad Horse and Blesst Chest at Turn Turn Turn.

The Toads took over the readers’ poll with their fun loving, power pop indie rock without a problem. Theses dudes really know how to write an easily lovable rock song that makes you want to pogo up and down with a huge smile on your face. Always Be Nice, the EP they released in October of last year, is a much needed reminder to spread some love and kindness around. You can check out their lovely live set at Quarterworld on Thursday with Radler.

A more than honorable mention needs to go out to Star Club, who gave The Toads a huge run for their money in the readers’ poll!

Candace is Back with Another Valentine’s Day Soundtrack

Posted on:

Last year, goblin pop trio Candace shared a duo of specially covered love songs for the sake of Valentine’s Day. They’ve done it again this year, and even included one of their own original tracks as an extra delight.

While you’re getting ready for your big Valentine’s date or perhaps just chilling at home demuring the date, Candace’s mini playlist is worthy of some proper rotation. Providing their own gazed out bedroom pop versions of "Something’s On My Mind" by Karen Dalton and "Do I get So Shy" by Shoes, along with a newer song of theirs called "Great Basin," their V-Day release is honestly one of the best things about today. Here’s to hoping it becomes an actual tradition.

You can catch Candace playing on Thursday, February 16 for a Lose Yr Mind sponsored show along with Souvenir Driver and Sinless.

New Petunia EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

John Ryan, a.k.a. Petunia, shells out energetic, heartfelt songs on his new EP Funny Talk. Focusing in on personal anecdotes with universal implications, the songs ache and arch in a smooth yet sincere manner. Whether touching on fragments of memories or analyzing the present circumstance, the tracks move in unified melody with an alt-country surrounding that spikes when called upon. Imploring a rather immediate familiarity, it echoes points within one’s past without becoming predictable. Petunia is slated to perform on Tuesday, March 7 at Boot & Saddle that will also includes Tim Darcy (of Ought) and Molly Burch. (Photo by Amanda Wagner)

PEP releases single “Get Physical,” plays Rough Trade on 03.16

Posted on:

Ladies and gentlemen, if you wonder who came up with the term “Nu-Wop Dreamsauce,” we can assure you it wasn’t late Supreme Court judge Antonin Scalia (R.I.P.). The words, instead, are used by NYC trio PEP to describe their Doo-Woop influenced vintage pop. These ladies just released a new single entitled "Get Physical," in anticipation of their debut album, to be released later this year. It sounds like some African influences made their way inside that ‘dreamsauce" – we likey! The band will be performing at Rough Trade on March 16. It promises to be a fun night.
