Weekend Warrior, February 3 – 5

Celebrating new music is the encompassing motif as this week draws to its end. The Menzingers surprised fans, booking an intimate, sold-out show this evening at Kung Fu Necktie. And neighboring Fishtown music venue/watering hole Johnny Brenda’s will also be playing host to a dual record release show. Dominic, a.k.a. Dominic Angelella (Lithuania, DRGN KING), uncorks Goodnight, Doggies., which is now available via Lame-O Records. The set of songs explore personal levels, retaining a lingering depth, while exhibiting the warmth of comforting, melodic instrumentation. Available via Mutual Crush, Girard Freeloader, the latest from Norwegian Arms, is textured electro-soul, finding a delicate balance between the steady, omnipresent flow of bright beats and the gentle plucks from Brendan Mulvihill’s signature mandolin work. With a new record, Jump Ship, scheduled for release via Lame-O on February 24, No Thank You, a.k.a. Kaytee Della Monica, will be opening the festivities.
 
Garage-psych rockers American Dinosaur will also be celebrating the release of their latest EP One for the Birds this Saturday at MilkBoy. They’ll be kicking the jams with Philly electro-rock outfit Man Like Machine and Harrisonburg, VA indie popsters The Dawn Drapes. – Michael Colavita

New Track: “Wishes in the Raindrops” – Sandcastle

It’s been a little over a year since we’ve heard any new material from Sandcastle. However, the group has resurfaced to support Bandcamp’s benefit campaign, which will be donating all proceeds from sales today to the ACLU. The band will also be donating all its proceeds, and plans to make its new record available for free download (hopefully later this month). Check out Sandcastle’s lovely new single, "Wishes in the Raindrop," off the group’s forthcoming album, whose working title is currently Netherodes Vol. I: Sunflowers for the Unnameable Daughter, and give all you can!

New Perfeckt Touch LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Perfeckt Touch, the latest moniker of Jo(e) Kusy, has released a new album, The Possibilities Are Endless, available via Brooklyn’s Time Castle Tapes. With fellow bandmate Rusty Langley from The Whips covering bass duties, the LP hovers in a comforting, lo-fi, psychedelic haze while exhibiting prime points of instrumental punch. Perfeckt Touch is set to perform a tape-release show at Ortlieb’s on February 24 with Davey and the Chains, Power Mystery, and Haunted Homes.

Yearly Best Emerging SF Bay Area Artists’ Poll begins with Revival Rock/Pop category!

Every year, in the early months, The Deli polls several local "scenemakers" to ask their opinion about the best emerging SF Bay Area based artists that got them excited in the previous year. We therefore list these artists on our local homepage, in a Readers’ Poll whose results contribute in deciding The Deli SF Bay Area’s Artist of the Year.

In an effort to give you more time to check out all the nominated bands, this year we have decided to stretch the readers’ polls a little, and, instead of posting a huge list of artists all at once, we will activate one genre-related poll every five days or so.

We begin today with bands in the Revival Rock/Pop category! You can find the poll on the top right of our homepage and you can cast your vote here.

We see our yearly polls as a fun way to engage our readers and the artists involved, and we hope they will get both to discover new local bands deserving of attention.

Jay Som Releases New Single – 1 Billion Dogs

Jay Som‘s new single, 1 Billion Dogs is a fuzzy, alternative pop track that we’re really into. We’re happy to hear new music from Jay Som and can’t wait to check out the full album!

Bay Area-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Melina Duterte – recently announced Everybody Works, her proper debut album, which will be out on March 10th via Polyvinyl Records. 

On her first proper album as Jay Som, 22 year-old Melina Duterte solidifies her rep as a self-made force of sonic splendor and emotional might. Everybody Works – which Duterte wrote, recorded, played and produced entirely by herself, save a few backing vocals – was made in three furious, caffeinated weeks in her bedroom studio throughout October. Duterte even ditched most her demos, writing half the LP on the spot. If last year’s aptly named Turn Into compilation showcased a fuzz-loving artist in flux, chronicling her mission to master bedroom recording, then Everybody Works is the LP equivalent of a mission accomplished.

Groovy folk rock from Richmond group Griff’s Room Band

Describing themselves as “fiddle-infused pop/rock”, Richmond, VA band Griff’s Room Band has a tight and well thought out sound.  The songs are constructed with some care; with a solid rhythm section, good singing, and nice solos from the fiddle and guitar.  This is a band that sounds like it would be fun to see live.

The Deli LA Premieres: Vákoum unveils ethereal new track “Breathing Through A Straw”

Traces of haunting synths, dreamy vocals, and an overall cosmic build, wrap up the electronic slow jam “Breathing Through A Straw” from San Diego via New York City duo Vákoum. Comprised of multi-instrumentalists Natalia Padilla and Kelli Rudick, the stargaze artists continue their sensory projection through loops and sonic deconstruction with their latest single. Setting the scene with a hypnotic introduction, Vákoum’s persistent long build creates a lightweight and abstract quality to the track’s tone. As the spacy sounds begin to unravel, a fuller electronic pulse is heard, providing a stable platform for a flow of vocals. Naturally teaming from Padilla and Rudick’s fusion of analog and digital qualities, “Breathing Through A Straw” becomes the duo’s most refined track yet.

Vákoum is set to release their debut album, Home to Home, on February 15th. Catch them on February 7th at The Hideout in San Diego. – Janette Ayub

Our Best of Nashville 2017 poll began last week with the Indie Rock/Pop category and after you-the-people cast your vote, we have the results to share with you!

Overall Poll winner (Jurors vote + Readers’ vote): Sun Seeker

Readers’ Poll Winner (Readers’ Vote only): Mom and Dad

Both of these artists offer a unique brand of indie rock. Mom and Dad concieve fuzzy rock n’ roll songs that are catchy enough to linger in your head long after you think you’re done with them. They fill a lo-fi, experimental sonic niche reminiscint of artists like Ty Segall, but structure their tunes in a way that emulates 60s pyscedelic pop hit makers like (ironically) The Mamas and The Papas. Both the heavy, garage rock fans and indie radio pop listeners have a friend in Mom and Dad, who don’t have any qualms with a catchy synth line or cutesie pop vocal hook, but love to create heavy sonic scapes with distorted guitars. They’re master dabblers who love swim in and out of different genre pools. 

Sun Seeker is a collective of local boys who give Nashville its much needed dose of alt-country rock. With simple beats, acoustic rhythm guitars and long, soaring pedal steel lines, they fill a somehow vacant space in the indie scene. Influeced by classics like Fleetwood Mac and Wilco, the songs are mature in their minimalism. Despite the band’s young age, they have enourmous talent in crafting beautiful, simple work that feels classic on the first listen. 

Honorable mentions go to Keeps (third in the overall chart) and The Pills (second in the Readers’ poll). The full list of nominees can be found under the streaming tracks.

Portland’s Best in Electronica/Experimental for 2017: Gold Casio and Abronia

 We’re steadily trudging through our polls for the bands all of you loyal participants in the Portland scene considered the best in music from last year. We tackled the electronic and experimental poll with this last round and we’re happy to announce our top winners (though you ALL our in our books!). Congrats to…

Gold Casio for winning the overall poll (which is our local jurors’ votes + the readers’ poll votes) and Abronia for winning our readers’ poll!

Likely the only psychedelic-electronic-disco act around, Gold Casio have been favorites in the local dance scene for a while now to those "in the know." But now, with more singles and shows under their belt, the band’s incredibly rhythmic and somewhat flirty musical nature has made its way into the hearts of those outside of the usual dance club dwellers, proving that all that really glitters is Gold…Casio.

Ambiently soft yet broodingly heavy, Abronia have expanded their lineup to match their beautifully atmospheric and expansive sound. Perfect for moments of mental reflection but easy to enjoy in damn near every other scenario, Abronia’s dominanation of the experimental side of the poll makes total sense, and we can’t wait to hear new releases from them.
