One easily gets swept up by “All Around The Neighborhood,” the latest from Pilkington. Instrumentally dashing through the streets, the song blossoms in power-pop splendor before stripping back to a duel vocal tug and pull. You can find them performing next in Philly on February 9 at MilkBoy, sharing a bill with Carroll and Bad Bad Hats.
New Track: “Against The Odds” (Feat. Bilal) – Hezekiah
Another single from Hezekiah’s EP Gods has emerged. Featuring Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter/musician/producer Bilal, “Against The Odds” is shrouded in ominous tones, cultivating a suspenseful air as Hezekiah demonstrates a determined, serious, confession-inflected delivery. Bilal’s smooth vocals provide a glimpse of hope before the emcee’s powerful verses push through with an honest unfiltered take.
Stringer brings ’90s flavored indie to Shea Stadium on 03.04
Looking at their social media pages, Stringer seems to be having a blast. They are playing shows, traveling, dressing up, and enjoying the company of cute dogs (yeah, even rockers have their soft spots). The quartet released debut EP “Dead Ass” back in 2015. The album consists of six tracks overflowing with distorted guitars, grounded in ’90s influences ranging from grunge to slak rock. These guys are also living it up (the DIY way) on March 4th when they play Shea Stadium with No Parents, Surfbort, and Plain Dog. – Jocelyn Huggler

Experimentally melodic with a space-exploring volatility, Illegal Licks or 30,000 Thrilling, Invigorating, Penetrating, Revitalizing Vibrations Per Minute, the new release from Throbbing Chakra, is accurately if not succinctly titled. Released on cassette via River Girls, the album spreads out over an assortment of interlacing genres, remaining instrumentally linked while delving into the psychedelic drift. Catch Throbbing Chakra in action at their record release show on Saturday, February 18 at The Buffalo with Beth Israel, Flea Bite, and Ursula!
Hollie Hammel releases debut EP
Don’t Wake Me Up is a body of work that both stimulates and soothes a musically curious mind. The songs are at once disarming and complex, blending a smooth, soulful voice with complex chord changes and playful, dancing melodies that skip lightly across the instrumentation of members of Nashville’s more seasoned neo jazz/funk/R&B/soul outfit, Dynamo. Hammel’s vocal talent is undeniable, with striking similarities to the vocal timbre of early St. Vincent records like Marry Me but with rounder edges that bring Nora Jones to mind. The overall complexity and combination of jazz, funk, and soul elements come together in these songs to form a masterful and cohesive piece that just makes sense to any appreciative listener. – Andrew Strader
Delicate Steve talks about pedals, plays Bowery on 02.03
If music is language, Delicate Steve‘s mother tongue is electric guitar – with an assorted stompbox accent. Few contemporary guitarists master the six strings’ vocabulary the way he does, unafraid as he is to experiment with tone, effects, and parts. The NJ based musician made ears turn in 2011-2012 with two instrumental records (‘Wondervisions‘ and ‘Positive Force‘) that showcased his imaginative, world music infused compositions. After a lot of touring, and a live album dated 2015, Delicate Steve is about to return with his third full length, entitled ‘This is Steve’ and scheduled for a January 27 release on Anti Records. Don’t miss the show at Bowery on February 3rd!
Our friends at Delicious Audio asked Steve a few questions about his sound. Read what he had to say here.
Buzz Alert: Jelani Sei Unleashes Ethereal Funk in New EP, Kaaria
Transcendental indie-funk band Jelani Sei has released a genre-bending second EP in Kaaria, a study in ethereal soundscapes mixed with soulful vocals and nasty funk grooves. The vocal work is exemplary, with complimenting performances from Kayana Guity and Evan Lawrence that work seemlessly together to create a unified voice. Catchy hooks, inventive songwriting, and tight instrumentals make Kaaria a release that is not to be missed. –Brian Varneke
Bryson Cone’s “Desire” Leaves Us Desiring His Debut
It’s likely you’ve heard the smooth croon of Bryson Cone before. Be it as the frontman of Fog Father, an appearing face in Reptaliens or belting out all the slick R&B jams at your local karaoke spot, Bryson Cone has got a voice rich like butter and a knack for catchily hitting some keys. If his other projects weren’t proof enough, his first few solo singles sure are, especially the one coming off of his upcoming debut.
"Desire," which officially came out a few days ago, is a lush art-pop diddy with intriguing effects and a lyrical story centered around unrequited proclivity and the search for a resolution. The song digs deeper than its colorful tunage let’s off, layering airy synths with meaningful elements.
Expect Bryson Cone’s debut album sometime this Spring.
Spend Valentine’s Day with The Doped Up Dollies at O’Brien’s Pub
Boston vocal trio, The Doped Up Dollies, first garnered the spotlight as the backing singers for ska/punk legends Big D and the Kids Table. They have since set out on their own and released a debut record in The New Way Out, a mesmerizing blend of roots rock, Motown R&B, dub, and revival ska, coming together to create a new genre: "stroll". This time, members of Big D take a backseat as the supporting band for these three powerhouse vocalists. The New Way Out is pure fun and incessantly danceable. Experience it live on 2/14 at O’Brien’s Pub, with support from The Pomps, Mickey Rickshaw, and Whoopi Sticks. –Brian Varneke
Let Gidrah Soothe Your Soul
Have the last few days got you blue? Do you find your emotions operating on a scale ranging from incredible anger to crying-into-your-whiskey sadness? Truth be told, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. It’s safe to say anyone with a brain likens the same frought conclusions as you, but with so much BLAH going around, what musical offering could possibly soothe our societal pain? A big dose of Gidrah just may be in order.
Sure, metal may not change the current political climate, but Gidrah’s crusty sludge is just as heavy as our hearts, serving as a close sonic alignment to our collective feelings. The most recent winners of our Artist of the Month poll dropped their demo no more than two years ago but the intensity of their at times bluesy riffs, seasoned with hints of breathy punk rawness and an overall atmospheric weightiness that encompasses the glum mysteriousness of existence, make for the best form of stoner doom metal to let your mind escape to.
From their Eh, Fuck It Dude, Let’s Go Destroy Cities (a message that is even more relevent now) demo to their most recent split release with doomy duo Urchin, we need more Gidrah and we need them now.
Reptaliens Are Your Favorite Indie Pop Band of 2016!
Reptaliens really do rule the Earth.
Some of us probably DO feel like the lizard elite run everything, or at the very least, the Cheeto elite do. After the way the last few weeks have gone that seems more like an actual fact than an alternative one. But when it comes to who has taken hold of our local music scene, there are a few names we just can’t get out of our heads. One of them is Reptaliens.
Led by the lovely union of Cole and Bambi Browning (Sculpture Gardens, Wampire, Brainstorm), Reptaliens has included members from other talented acts like Fog Father, Cat Hoch Band and Lola Buzzkill over their course of their band-dom, but a constant enjoyment can always be found in their songs. A twee-like innocence presents itself amid the lo-fi instrumentation and angelically comforting vocals from Bambi, allowing their songs to easily sway from flirty bedroom pop songs to surrealistic dream daze productions.
As of right now, Reptaliens are scheduled to play their next show March 3rd with Skull Diver and King Black Acid at Mississippi Studios. Until then, congratulate Reptaliens for being your favorite Indie Pop act of 2016!
