Surf-y, garage rockers, the Saylavees, bring their tunes to Union Pool 2/11

Posted on:

With an old-school surf aesthetic, and some serious bad bitch vibes, the Saylavees are laying down totally dreamy garage rock. The NYC-based band features three-part vocal harmonies that feel both dulcet and haunting, and pair perfectly to their fuzzy guitar sounds and punchy beats. Think black sands and night-time, summer drives with the windows down, and you’ve captured some of the mystic surrounding the group. Check them out live at Union Pool 2/11 with Alana Amram and Greg Cartright, and be sure to hit the play button on the track below. – Olivia Sisinni

Slaptop Releases New Music Video – Another Life (feat. Geneva White)

Posted on:

We’re excited for you to check out Slaptop’s new music video for his singer, Another Life (feat. Geneva White).

San-Francisco producer Slaptop revealed the plans for a debut artist album, With You, due out March 3rd, 2017 via his own newly founded label Sunsquad Records. So far, fans have been treated to two cuts from the project- "Passenger" a magnetic indie-dance cut co-signed by The Magician for his label Potion Records, and "I Try," a dance-pop cross over single featuring a mesmerizing vocal line from Olivia Florentino.

Taking us deeper into the upcoming LP, Slaptop has now released the third album single, "Another Life." Featuring vocalist Geneva White, "Another Life" comes to fruition thanks to hypnotic four-on-the-floor rhythms, deep synth, a sub quaking bassline, and finally a set of unforgettable lyrics that are sure to be lodged in your brain long after the tracks final beats. A strong indicator of what’s to come on the remainder of the album, "Another Life," proves to be an enigmatic dance track ideal for peak hour club play.

New Midwestern Exposure EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Slow-cooking in a rustic country-blues cauldron, the trio of Midwestern Exposure simmers and sizzles on their EP Grizzly Bear (hehe…an album that is probably not a favorite of Betsy DeVos). A pressurized, swaying stomp builds around the gutturally personalized vocals. With the expanse of a traveling/searching lyrical endeavor, the songs spread out in a loose, gritty manner, peppered with periods of instrumental intensity in raunchy riffs and blues harp heat. Midwestern Exposure is currently scheduled to perform next in Philly on Thursday, May 4 at Bourbon & Branch.

Mike Bruno and his compatriots, who are now better know as Shadow Band, have been crafting and refining their musical skills for years now around Philly. And with their signing to Mexican Summer, who will be releasing the group’s first full-length, Wilderness Of Love, due out February 24, it sounds like they are ready to cast their psych-folk net upon a larger audience. Below is the second offering from their forthcoming LP, titled "Daylight," and they’ll be heading out on tour next month in support of the new record. You can experience them live in town on February 25 at Baird Mansion Atrium, which will be their Philly record release show.

Baked to release new LP “Farnham” on February 24th at Shea Stadium

Posted on:

A few years back The Deli covered the release of Baked‘s previous album, Debt, at Shea Stadium. The Brooklyn-based psych rockers will return to the legendary Bushwick venue on February 24th to release their brand-new record, titled Farnham in memory of frontman RJ Gordon’s late college roommate.

The new album has plenty of the shoegazey haze that fans of Debt will love, though it’s a bit darker and refined. The supercharged sound — reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine and Gordon’s other band, Titus Andronicus — comes through on tracks like "Danelectroladyland" (streaming below.)

Supporting acts Honduras, Grass Is Green, and Hounds will join Baked at their record release show. – Will Sisskind

Join them in the AM this Saturday, February 4 at The Tip for the kickoff of RFA’s Erin Express – Kegs n Eggs events. "Start your day off with some Rock n Roll and some cheap beer…oh and of course, omelettes."

Mood Music: Icarus The Owl – “A Thousand Miles (Vanessa Carlton Cover)”

Posted on:

If you were anything like most of the mid-2000’s Myspace crowd, it’s incredibly likely you got down with all those Punk Goes… compilations. There was Punk Goes Acoustic and Punk Goes Crunk (which was of course as hilariously good as it sounds), but Punk Goes Pop definitely gave them both a run for their money. The best of the scene tried their hand at covering songs from the top of the pop charts, but since the last volume of it came out in 2014, we haven’t gotten the same pop punk fulfillment.

Thank you, Icarus The Owl, and your cover of Vanessa Carlton‘s "A Thousand Miles" for filling that void.

Premiering via Alternative Press a little over a week ago, Icarus The Owl’s cover of this piano playing staple features the classic technical drumming and mastered guitar playing we usually see from the band, along with some three part harmonies that really bring the cover to life.

On taking on the song, the band says: "This song is timeless to us and we’ve always jokingly played the main riff while sound checking on stage. We decided it was time to do a proper cover. Also the scene in White Chicks."

That movie, yes. All of it, yes. Give it a listen below.

See the flyer above for a breakdown of each night’s LPDP pairings. Each night is free, 21+ and starts at 7pm so if you’re gearing up to head out for the night, stop by Al’s Den and see them tonight with Haley Heynderickx.

Matthew Fountain & the Whereabouts’ “Written on Your Wall” Makes You Reflect on All Your Conversations

Posted on:

From shredding in Mississippi metal bands as a teen to a West Coast move resulting in a new sound, Matthew Fountain has taken the familial jazzy influence of his upbringing and turned it into the artsy folk pop us Portlanders get to experience today.

With anywhere from three to eight of his musician friends joining him live as part of the Whereabouts, Matthew Fountain’s tunes lyrically reflect the familiar struggle we all have with reflecting on self-identity, social interactions, the future, love and other strong forces we experience. Some of these themes can be heard on his newest track, "Written on Your Wall," that came out just over a week ago.

Through moody chamber folk and a somewhat theatrical production, "Written on Your Wall" touches on the all too common human tendency of hearing what we want to out of conversations and other people’s words. Its syncopated arrangements and interesting key changes keep the listener attentive while engaging in its relatable storyline. Give it a listen below

GOOD ANYA “GOOD EFFORT” EP

Posted on:

Good Anya was formed in 2013 in Dundas, Ontario. They’re a 4 piece dreamy alternative band with catchy riffs and perfectly lazy vocals. There is definite 90’s vibes to them even though I don’t think they were alive for much of the 90’s. The music would fit right in on the classic days of the Muchmusic Countdown. The singer has a more modern indie feel to his vocals or perhaps a bit of britpop. Kinda sounds like the guy from Phoenix. Good Anya released their latest EP last year titled "Good Effort" which is very true. There’s 4 solid indie rock tracks that’ll leave you wanting more. So then you can go see em live at the Baby G on Friday February 3rd. – Kris Gies
