Live Review: Slow Hollows at Teragram Ballroom 11/4

Posted on:

Sans the winding roads and $15 parking lots near Teragram Ballroom, Slow Hollows‘ album release party was a considerable success, drawing kids from as far out as Antelope Valley and Pomona to Los Angeles’ decadent sidestreets. A gaggle of selfies were taken while waiting around the Ballroom’s characteristic marquee, and at 9PM Danger Collective’s BOYO (fka Bobby T. and the Slackers) had Robert Tilden promptly lulling the crowd—the band released their EP "machines" on Halloween. High school sweethearts and rowdy teens were thrown together as The Buttertones ripped through their setlist, which included songs from 2015’s acclaimed western American Brunch. Someone lost their car keys, and someone else lost a shoe. At least four teens crowdsurfed, but everyone just stood and swayed and collectively sighed to the songs off Romantic, introduced by a very modest, somewhat blasé, endearingly ineffectual frontman and songwriter Austin Feinstein. The crowd just went like, yeah.

WINE LIPS – “DEAD BEAT” VIDEO

Posted on:

Do you like extreme sports and fireworks? This new Wine Lips video has it all. Can’t go wrong with some skateboarding and this Toronto garage trio causes all kinds of mischief in their video for "Dead Beat". An absolute ripper track from their debut EP. It’s got a solid rhythm section packin a punch and giving you constant body shots. Meanwhile the guitar is just flippin’ out…If you’re into the California garage scene you’ll dig Wine Lips. Excellent party music. Go see em on Friday at The Central with Jean Daddy and Possum. – Kris Gies

SPECTRE HEARTS – PRELUDES

Posted on:

The word Spectre always reminds me of Twisted Metal for Playstation…Anyways, Spectre Hearts are a Toronto band that call themselves trashwave. That’s a somewhat accurate description. Not very trashy though…actually more catchy. They released an EP in September titled "Preludes". "Glass Cannons" is the second track on the album and along with the new wave influences, this track incorporates a funky verse section along with a dreamy pop chorus. Download the EP on their bandcamp page today! – Kris Gies

DEARLY BELOVED – NEW MUSIC VIDEO

Posted on:

Dearly Beloved is one of the top bands to come out of Toronto in recent years. They seem to spend a lot of time over in Europe but they have dropped some wildly intense tunes over the years. Main man Rob Higgins sings and absolutely shreds the bass at the same time. They recently released a video for the brand new track "I Tried To Leave". It’s a straight up ripper that would make Josh Homme nod his head with approval. The connection is aleady there as Dearly Beloved have worked with Homme collaborators Chris Goss and Dave Catching in the past. They have had tunes in the past that stretch their creativity more than on this tune but crank this bad boy up and honestly…just giver… – Kris Gies

JEAN DADDY – LIVE AT THE CENTRAL

Posted on:

Besides having a sweet name, Jean Daddy plays some deadly garage punk tunes. They put together some fast n heavy rock tunes that’ll make you drive like a maniac and pretty much make you not give a fuck in general. Listen to Salmon Candy to know what I’m talking about. This 4 piece band from Kitchener will be in Toronto on Friday Night at the Central with Wine Lips and Possum. – Kris Gies

Surf-Rock Group, Shark Rider, Release Sun-Drenched Debut EP “A Day In Paradise”

Posted on:

Local surf-rock quartet, Shark Rider, features members from various other Austin bands that found commonality in the sun-drenched Summer vibes of rowdy beach music. Borrowing heavily from classic surf-rock pioneers like the Ventures and Dick Dale, Shark Rider mixes in their own signature sauce of New Wave hooks and infectious choruses. Shark Rider is releasing their first EP, "A Day In Paradise", which as its name suggests, functions as a perfect score to uplifting outdoor activities and night-long parties. The EP’s first featured single "I’ve Arrived" bounces to clean-cut to guitar strumming and dual melodic vocals, courtesy of Nowell Maluski and Joe Gardner. High-energy drumming, jangled guitars, and soaring choruses define this new upstart band that should be instigating beach parties throughout Austin venues very soon.

Vorhees brings her atmospheric compositions to Baby’s All Right 11.11

Posted on:

Mysterious, captivating, frightening, and beautiful all at once, Vorhees‘ experimental compositions cross the boundaries of pop and electronica. "Are We a Fossil, and of Facings" is an ongoing melodic movement with heavily processed guitars and luscious keyboard flourishes that swirl and fade in a wide sonic atmosphere—a truly intriguing aural journey. ‘The Way I Feel inside’ is a Zombies cover and her only structured and melodic song, with ambient, goth and orchestral elements. Listen to it below and in person at Baby’s All Right on November 11. – Ashley Muniz

Visual Vices: Sheers – “Depth”

Posted on:

We premiered "Depth" by Sheers back in August and we’re pleased to be able to share the song’s coinciding video. Visually intriguing, the video for "Depth" artistically represents introspective acumen aesthetically demonstrated by a pinkish hue, beautiful interpretive dance and provocative actions by the video’s main character – Lily Breshears herself.

The perfect effigy for such a deep gothic folk track, Sheers‘ new video will make you want to watch it over and over again.

Future Generations release debut album, play Baby’s All Right 11.14

Posted on:

After releasing their debut, self-titled album under local label Frenchkiss, on November 14, NYC’s Future Generations will be bringing their vaguely epic indie pop to Baby’s All Right. Off their record, single "Thunder In The City" presents a sonic landscape that intertwines a feel-good upbeat mood with a melancholic ambience, reminiscent of bands like Two Door Cinema Club and Passion Pit. The dream-like, faded vocal presence, combined with sorrowful abstract lyrical content, creates an overall atmosphere of both sadness and relief. Take a listen down below and also check out the video for their breakout single ‘Stars‘. – Ashley Muniz

PREMIERE: Arrows In Orbit – “The New You”

Posted on:

For a band fairly recent in its development, Arrows in Orbit already have a good grasp on what it takes to blend prog rock with classic folk in an uniquely emotive way. The four-piece encompasses diverse members from assorted corners of the world, with each of their different backgrounds adding nonpareil factions to a musical style led by lead singer and songwriter Hunter Paye.

Arrows in Orbit’s definitive style is clearly expressed on the track we’re premiering today, "The New You." The first song Paye wrote upon acquiring his first electric guitar, "The New You" is refined, promising more solid releases from the rest of the Blueprints for Flight EP and the band in general.

The single release show for "The New You" will be November 16 at the Liquor Store as part of The Secret Sea‘s newest album release and an accompanying set from Glasys. Tickets are $7 with the show starting at 9pm.

Shannon La Brie brings intimate blues rock to Alley Taps 12/03

Posted on:

Whether she’s accompanied by keys, or her full band, Shannon La Brie is a force to be reckoned with. Her smoky, powerhouse vocals are raw and intimate, much like her songs, and she deals in melancholy and old-school blues rock. Think Adele with a dash of home-fried southern twang and you might get close. Check out Shannon La Brie, at Alley Taps 12/03 and in the meantime stream her below.-Olivia Sisinni

Buzz Alert: Cheena takes their twang-punk to Europe

Posted on:

Busting out of the city’s underbelly, Cheena, a 5-piece twang-punk band, churns out tunes for NY nocturnals and is quickly proving a place among the streets that artists like Lou Reed and the Dolls once called home. Their latest album, Spend the Night With…, smacks of NYC glitz and grit, and belches out anarcho-anthems for lawless nights spent in packed, sweaty rock clubs. It’s probably not fair to say that Cheena sounds like New York, but you’ll find that the glam and gutter goodness–the sneering, New York-cool–all baked in between the catchy melodies and reckless riffs. The band is currently on a Euro-tour so hold yourself over until they return by streaming them below. – Olivia Sisinni
