Philly’s own Purling Hiss will be reverberating through Johnny Brenda’s tonight. Heavy, abrasive psychedelia with a tinge of pop this time around will be served straight to your ears by the power trio. Their sixth studio album, High Bias, which was released earlier this month via Drag City, is a watermark for Mike Polizze-led project, as much as it is a logical progression from his earlier works, and it is nothing short of a total sonic trip. Joining the onslaught of noise this evening will be local lo-fi psych outfit Honey Radar and Baltimore’s Hothead. Just stay away from the brown acid, and you’ll have a blast. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. The Superweaks Record Release Show at KFN Oct. 30
Local alt-rockers The Superweaks will be celebrating the release of their sophomore LP, Better Heavens, tonight at Kung Fu Necktie, which will be a bittersweet affair as they also honor fallen bassist and brethren Corey Bernard, who would have been 23 today. The band will be embarking on a tour in support of the new album next month that will take them up through Canada and then back down into the states through parts of the south. The full-length officially comes out November 4 via Lame-O Records. This evening’s celebratory billing at KFN will also include Philly pals Sun Organ, Three Man Cannon, and Thin Lips, whose album Riff Hard was released back in May with Lame-O as well. Light the Black Flame Candle with the Halloween HoPo Party
*poster by Jodie Beechem
How could this show not be on our radar? Lose Yr Mind Fest has killed it with this witchy presention of bands, with the theme being that of one of everyone’s favorite Halloween movies, Hocus Pocus. HoPo, or the Halloween Hocus Pocus Party will see the Liquor Store transform into its own Salem, Mass., with Cat Hoch, Fog Father and Wampire serving as our harmonious Sanderson Sisters.
As to which band correlates to Sarah, Winnie and Mary? That’s up to you, but Fog Father will be releasing a single this night as well, making the whole thing even more fun.
To boot, Hocus Pocus will be playing on a projection screen behind the bands as they play and there will be a late night dance party following the sets. If you wear a costume, you’ll be entered to win some prizes!
HoPo is 21+, $10 and a good mix of traditional Halloween celebrating (there will be candy, too!) and the way Portland celebrates – with music.
Saturday Night Sounds: Elvis vs. Elvis, Portland Style
Tonight’s Saturday Night Sounds is based on an interesting but necessary show concept, taking place on Halloween proper. Elvis vs. Elvis – Sound Judgement Halloween is happening at Valentines Monday and will be a showdown between the music world’s two most famous (if not only) men named Elvis – Elvis Costello and Elvis Presley. Who’s representing each respective Elvis?
Rentz Leinbach and Rambush.
The matchmaking on this bill is perfect, as Rentz Leinbach’s lo-fi country power pop and similar take on vocal play make him the esteemed man for the job. As far as Rambush doing Presley, their ability to blend various genres with an original approach make them just as good a choice to tackle the King’s inventiveness.
We’ve included a track from each act below so you can get a feel for the cover battle to be presented at the 21+ and free show.
Turn Your Halloween into Homieween
Even though Halloween may be lacking in amount of days off from work and school, it’s still hands down the best holiday to celebrate with your homies. There are quite a few events going on this weekend that would allow for such activities, but they may not cater to them as much as Homieween ’16.
Dig A Pony’s night of costumed craziness will be hosted by everyone’s favorite funnyman drummer Papi Fimbres along with some commentary input from DJ T-Kray (Theo Craig), so we’ll definitely be entertained in between the evening’s stacked bill.
Indie rockers Months will share the stage with the funky punk of Bitch’n, the experimental alt-rock from Helvetia and a SUPER SECRET HEADLINER that’s leaving us all sorts of curious and intrigued. The mystery headliner is set to go on at midnight, truly bringing in Halloween official properly.
Homieween 16′ is TOMORROW and for $10 you’ll strut tough through the 8pm doors and subsequent laughs, with music kicking off at 9pm.
Mood Music: Ramodes – “Just Can’t Get Enuff”
When it comes to bands that have done the most for modern day music, Depeche Mode and the Ramones definitely top that list. While their outputs appealed to different audiences, fusing them together to create one solidly awesome entity is one of the most genius things this Deli Portlander has every seen. Thank goodness Ramodes is actually a thing now.
Pulling punks from both Scourge of Ians and Chartbusters, along with some contributing minds from bedroom pop act PS-AX, Ramodes is exactly what you need out of a mashup cover band. It sets the brooding lyrics of Depeche Mode to the lighthearted punk of the Ramones, which is a must see for the Halloween cover band season and honestly, something we hope will stick around all year long.
Ramodes will be playing two cover sets – one tonight at Blackwater and one tomorrow at the Know.
PDX meets NYC tonight with Shannon Entropy
Halloween weekend technically kicked off yesterday, but in the spirit of keeping the party going, make sure you drop by the early set at Analog Cafe tonight. Presale tickets may not be available anymore, but seeing locals Shannon Entropy with New York’s Sunflower Bean and the Lemon Twigs is worth the $12 door price.
Things are kicking off early with doors at 6pm, but try not to miss Shannon Entropy’s indie meets psych-hop set. Their atypical approach to sonance was first shared with the world earlier this year through their debut The Tamale EP, which also helped them win one of our Artist of the Month polls back in September.
Shannon Entropy is truly unlike any other indie act in town so it makes sense they were asked to open for the poppy glam rock of the Lemon Twigs and bedroom rock of Sunflower Bean. It’ll be a lively evening performance worth checking out.
Ivy Sole Opening for Sammus & Sad13 at PhilaMOCA Oct. 29
Soulful storytelling with a purposeful, self-conscious confidence, Philly-by-way-of-Charlotte emcee Ivy Sole delivers lyrical tales, swimming through thoughtful complexly-detailed narratives that are amplified by production that smoothly cruises on the boom-bap. It’s a fresh nod to old-school overtures that exudes a personal appeal through sincerity, meshing spoken word with singing in a laidback message. The rattling, fluorescent noise-pop of Empath aids in setting the stage for Sad13, a.k.a. Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Oritz, whose new solo album Slugger is due out November 11, explores personal issues through a bright, pop lense. Sammus, who released her debut album Pieces in Space yesterday via Don Giovanni Records and appears on Slugger, completes this PhilaMOCA billing. Premiere: Mark Nelsen Band – In My Own Defense
Mark Nelsen Band has a new single called In My Own Defense and we’re excited to share it with you! We reviewed Mark Nelsen’s solo single, Screwball (Change the Weather) two years ago, which is a part of this same collection / album being released. Nonetheless, the songs by Mark Nelsen Band are heavier rock n roll / alternative and bluesy.
"Our newest track ‘In My Own Defense’ foreshadows the long overdue ‘Change The Weather’ LP – a collection of heavier, bluesier band recordings from 2012-2015. Finally this album is coming out! This particular song is an upbeat rocker who’s remorseful narrator searches for peace of mind under the moonlight. He’s unsure why he’s guilty and wonders if he really must change. Something like that." – Mark Nelsen
Talullah Ruff drops new single and plays The Gateway 10/31
With a set of effortless vocals and a strong pop sensibility, NYC-based Talullah Ruff typically crafts radio-ready alt-blues tunes, but her latest release has a decidedly electro feel. The new single, "Resilience," is a blues-soaked banger that showcases Ruff’s talent of writing tracks that are as catchy as they are piercing. Her soulful vocal performance is punctutated by nuanced EDM instrumentation, that give credence to–rather than distracts from–her poignant lyricism. Stream "Resilience" below and catch Talullah Ruff on Halloween playing The Gateway with PSYMON SPINE, For Everest, Nervous Dater, Field Trip and more. – Olivia Sisinni

Infinity Shred releases sophomore LP ‘Long Distance,’ plays Shea Stadium on 11.18
Infinity Shred’s 2013 debut album Sanctuary was an instant cult favorite in NYC, where nothing else sounded remotely like it. Damon Hardjowirogo and George Stroud had previously worked together as Starscream, a dance-punk act that drew heavy influence from cyberpunk-ish soundtracks to 1980s Japanese films. A track off their last LP, Future, Towards the Edge of Forever (2011), titled “Thrashers (Infinity Shred),” gave the pair’s next act both its name and new direction. Infinity’s proggish techno reconfigures Jan Hammer’s coked-up ’80s instrumentals (think “The Miami Vice Theme”) into digital nightmares for the 21st century. Their brand new sophomore full length ‘Long Distance‘ features a sound slightly evolved, with the includion of fuzz guitar elements and a vibe that’s overall more ambient and dark. The trio will be embarking on an east coast tour in November, with a final date at Shea Stadium on the 18th. – This is mostly an excerpt from Brian Chidester’s piece ‘Electric Cafe’ on The Deli Magazine’s 41st issue.
