New Music, Emerging from your Local Scene
Philosophical Zombie delivers moody, post-punk vibes that feel as dark as they do danceable. The group is set to drop an album this month entitled Cotard’s, but if the already released single "Dream On" is anything to judge by, listeners can expect interesting chord progressions, spacey sounds, and weirdly infectious hooks from the band. Slaughter Beach, Dog, a.k.a. Jake Ewald of Modern Baseball, recently released a new album, Welcome, via Lame-O Records. One naturally dives head first into narrative depths, exploring the detailed imagery as loose, energetic melodies sustain the drive. These sonic anecdotes resonate, tugging at the emotive core while painting complex, sometimes heavy situations with an earnest, rebounding, "we’re alone in this together" reassurance.
After a super successful first night, and an allstar line-up, Deli NYC sponsored event The Hum returns for its second week at beautifully intimate Greenpoint venue Manhattan Inn. For those just tuning in now, the month-long residency, presented by Hypnocraft, is aimed at spotlighting female musicians across a wide variety of genres, and inspires unexpected collaborations. Monday night’s line up promises to be atmospheric and experimental, including musicians from Space Captain, Iris Lune, and MADEIRA. Folk, at its core, is anchored in a songwriter’s ability to transport listeners to a "fly on the wall" perspective. That uninhibited point of view, in which communicative distance shrinks to a personal level, creates a bond. Tonight, as she celebrates the release of her new EP, Deceiving Yourself and Everyone Else, which was produced by The Lawsuits’ Brian Dale Allen Strouse, Dylan Jane draws one in close at Bourbon & Branch. Silhouetted in Americana, the music imparts the fire-catching effects of pensive proximity, inviting warmth capable of sending a chill up your spine. A pair of locals, whom made contributions to the album, in the yearning emotive yet casual, alt-country, sonic steps of Friendship and the folk-spun, powerful elegance of Chelsea Mitchell (Dirty Dollhouse) helps in shaping this bill that is completed by Solar. An air of mystery and beauty permeates Samuel Proffitt‘s latest single Drown, off the forthcoming EP Grey Notebook. On this track, the classic piano ballad is placed within the dimensions of electronica. Combined with the seductive melancholia of SKYLR’s vocals, the song’s ambience is hauntingly memorable. Opening with a primal scream, NY-based trio Treads’s latest EP is a whirlwind record complete with gut-busting screeches and head-shaking riffage. The aptly titled EP 1 is four tracks of high-energy punk earworms that are instantly catchy without being overtly poppy. Big Sis is the new project of Nathan Paris-Hernandez, a songwriter who’s assembled a loose collective of musicians that include members of other well known local acts like L.A. Witch and Pastilla. On their latest single, "Way Back", the band exhibits a more robust and nuanced version of melody, noise and rock that resonates with a nonchalant, yet rough-around-the edges beauty. But there’s also some intricately knotty guitars in display, honing in a slackened mood with its loungy grooves and psychedelia undertones.
"Way Back" is featured on Big Sis’ upcoming self-titled effort, which will be out digitally and on cassette via ¡DAME! on October 21. You can catch them at Redwood Bar & Grill tomorrow, October 6, alongside Globelamp and Pipe Dreams. The band is also playing a record release show at ¡DAME!
