Alt-rockers The Effects, to play DC9 10/14

Posted on:

With fuzzy basslines, bold vocals, and a classic, guitar-driven sound, DC-based The Effects deliver angular alt rock with indie rock vibes. Anthemic, and instantly catchy, the trio’s sound is aggressive but melodic and immediately accesible without being boring. You can check out the band playing DC9 10/14 with Cinemechanica, but in the meantime stream them below.-Olivia Sisinni

New Track: “Plant” – Doubles

Posted on:

“Plant,” the first single from the quartet of Doubles, gradually blossoms before one’s ears. Vocal harmonies with the slight tick of guitar gives way to uninhibited, rockin’ instrumentation. What begins as the makings of a tender tune tears off the band-aid in thoughtful rebellion/independence.

NYC’s DJ Jubilee to play BEMF at the Good Room on 11/4

Posted on:

It makes sense that Jubilee would take her name from the X-men member known for shooting pyrotechnics out of her palms. The Brooklyn-based DJ by way of Miami produces explosive mixes that span multiple genres and leave your stereo spitting sparks. On MAGICITY II, Jubilee channels her tropical-city roots, but also manages to pivot between dancehall, R&B, techno, and grime–seamlessly flipping feels and rhythms. Anyway you carve it up, Jubilee is bringing the party and you can expect fireworks. Listen to Jubilee streaming below, or catch her 11/4 at the Good Room with Danny Daze, Jimmy Edgar and Barnt, a show that’s part of the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival– Olivia Sisinni

Retail Space talk about the creative process on Delicious Audio

Posted on:

Catchy but soulful, vintage but vogue, Retail Space is a Brooklyn-based duo dropping some highly dynamic music. In a scene that is getting increasingly weary of the neo-psych aesthetic, the band manages to masterfully package synth-y, psych pop vibes with a charming, indie-folk tinge that feels crisp instead of tired. The band, who recorded their most recent release, In the Lotia, using only analog equipment, was kind enough to talk to us about their recording process, their creative process, and of course, the gear that helps drive it all forward. We recently asked the band a few questions about their creative process and the gear employed in their release, you can read about it on our sister blog Delicious Audio. – Olivia Sisinni

Explore the Tortured Aftermath of Cemetery Flowers at Second Empire Oct. 11

Posted on:

One enters and explores the tortured aftermath when listening to Cemetery Flowers. Tonight, they’ll be placed at DIY space Second Empire. Pushing through hostile, chaotic surroundings and welding steely cold, persistent grooves with the lingering outcry of vocals, Cemetery Flowers rolls through what at first glance appears to be empty terrain, drawing others out of their personal sanctuaries, marching them forward, before streamlining the disorder into union. The blistering bombardment of Machine Gun and the desolate, tormenting rushing of post-punk known as Humanshapes round out a trio of locals supplemented by the immediate onslaught of Greensboro’s Holder’s Scar and the synth-guided space-punk of Nashville’s Essential Tremors. Second Empire, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 7pm, $7, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Post drone rockers 75 Dollar Bill play Troost 10/23

Posted on:

We are not even sure where to start with a band like 75 Dollar Bill, but after a series of jaw drops, we’re comfortable settling on "brilliant." The NY-based duo of Rick Brown and Che Chen produce gorgeous, winding instrumentals that are not only melodically lush, but rhythmicaly intricate and driving. Lead by a quarter-tone guitar, the band’s music draws from a distinctive North African influence, but their sound is as expansive as it is downright nuts. Stacking layers and layers of instrumentation as diverse as viola drones and bari sax licks, 75 Dollar Bill lands firmly in devilishly intriguing territory. Do yourself a favor and stream them below, or better yet, catch them live at Troost 10/23.-Olivia Sisinni

New Track: “Forward” – Marc Neibauer & Austin Potter

Posted on:

Marc Neibauer (My Home is the Sea, ex-Eat Your Birthday Cake) and Austin Potter (Tapes & Tubes) have combined forces releasing the single, “Forward,” via Potter’s fledgling label Safe Harbor. The song’s reflective lyricism spills out into crisp, night air as serene, isolating instrumentation gradually picks up the pace as the subject peers in both directions the past and the future. Hopefully this pairing will continue to march ahead.

Desilu Creates Cosmic Punk Vibrations on Claw

Posted on:

Self-described as ‘Ewoks operating the Death Star after a long night of Ewok partying’, Desilu, is an enticing blend of sonic reverb and angst-fueled garage rock that coalesces into a cosmic punk opera. Desilu’s recently released 4th album, Claws, springs from the eternal well of Austin influenced psychedelia but succeeds in cross-pollinating punk influences like the Black Lips, Jay Reatard, and Wavves into the genome as well. Jangled keys, winding guitars, and chanted vocals feels like a train on the verge of derailing at any moment, but this quintet of Austin  vagabonds keep the momentum moving forward. Recent additions of keyboardist, Chris Horne, and guitarist, Joe Pechacek, may be the extra layers needed to complete this unique but pleasantly entrancing avant-garde outfit.
