Breanna Barbara brings her folkedelic blues rock to Sunnyvale on 10.27
With her third release Mirage Dreams, Brooklyn-based (via Minnesota and Florida) Breanna Barbara has put out an uber confident record that defies time and space. Her peculiar blend of blues, folk, and psychedelia transports us to the west coast in the summer of 1968. Yet, the word revival sounds reductive here: behind the familiar overdriven organs, twangy guitars, and expanded jams, live rare intensity and power. The album title track (streaming below) perfectly examplifies this artist’s – quite literally – howling fervor. Don’t miss your chance to see her live at Sunnyvale on October 27, where she’ll bring her tales of melancholy dreams, delusions, and demons.
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Alt Rock songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!
Dougie Poole releases new EP and plays Baby’s All Right 10/10
I can only imagine that old-school country vibes are a difficult sell in New York, but Dougie Poole, the self-proclaimed "Most Generally Well-Adjusted Country Singer/Songwriter" delivers just that, and in a way that may even be compelling for listeners with more Northern musical leanings. Olneyville System Special EP, his latest release, has one foot in traditional country, but there’s something about the instrumentation that feels very modern, and certainly self-aware. This, coupled with Poole’s smooth baritone voice makes the EP mandatory listening for even the most discerning anti-country New Yorker. Check out "Olneyville System Special" streaming below and catch Poole at Baby’s All Right 10/10 with Still Corners and Foxes in Fiction. -Olivia Sisinni

The Past, The Future, Dwelling There Like Space, the debut album from Ghost Gum, will officially comes out tomorrow. However, you can currently stream it in full over at Stereogum. It’s complex – not chaotic. (Photo by Ariel Lin)
Ziemba founds label, release “LALA” single, tours Europe
We were among the first blogs to draw attention towards NYC’s Ziemba bravely decadent atmospheres and simple but stylish visuals. We are glad to report that the young lady has been keeping at it: Concept EP ‘LALA’ (produced by Jeremiah Meece, streaming below) is the first official release on Ardis Multiverse, the artist’s new multisensory imprint, and reflects a musical departure for Ziemba, compared to recent LP Hope is Never. In a setting that’s as dark, but more consistently electronic, Ziemba tells the story of "a succubus […] who lives in a cave and sequesters herself to protect the world from her capacity for destruction." Ziemba also announced a fall European tour. Recommended for those who miss Nico. – photo by Ben Grad.
Exclusive Austin Deli Premiere: Blood Pumps release ‘Long Gossip’ off new EP
Blood Pumps comfortably blends smart song craft with interesting, accessible angularity; subtle counter points rhythmically and melodically with intelligent, almost-too-smart-for-pop lyricism delivered with Bill Stevenson’s elastic tenor. The marriage of Black Joe Lewis’ gut bucket guitar with Mike Brinley’s dry-cleaned guitar stands in direct contrast to the washed out reverb and effects heavy sound of many contemporaries in the rock’n’roll scene. All of these ingredients and brush strokes are tied together by an analog beat machine that Stevenson used to record material in between tours of his normal gig backing up Joe.
The five songs on Blood Pump’s EP display the prowess of three individuals applying themselves outside their comfort zone. Their new release,"Long Gossip", comes out in a stratling cacophany then cracks into a mid-tempo 3/4 groove then slyly resets int a 4/4 groove right as the guitar’s quick-cat-lash vertical intro lines delve into Ric Ocasek territory.

Tapes & Tubes, a.k.a. Austin Potter, has recently released a retrospective collection of songs entitled Retroactive. Available on cassette and lathe-cut vinyl via UK label Liquid Library, the songs emerge from in between the cracks with their intimately hushed/secretive vocal tones. The album touches on those deep, isolating, pensive states that come to the forefront when returning from sleep or conversely nodding off to slumber.
CROWN LANDS – “BEING RIGHT” PREMIERE!
Current Band of the Month here at the Deli – Crown Lands have done up a live-off-the-floor video for their tune "Being Right" at Rattlebox Studios. This video gives you a glimpse of how these 2 fellas make their huge sound. Cody Bowles rocks the drums very solid and consistent and he howls at the same time with a Wolfmother feel to his voice. Kevin Comeau on guitar and bass pedals is very impressive and it seems his multi-tasking is key to the full sound this 2 piece band produces. I’m often skeptical about 2 piece bands but Crown Lands have figured out something special. They will be at Hard Luck Bar on Thursday September 29 with The Kerouacs, Big Lonely and The Ballroom Babies. Here is a link to that event. Enjoy the video. – Kris Gies

DAN EDMONDS – “LOVE CAN BE A TUNNEL”
Dan Edmonds is gettin’ his solo career going quite nicely since his former band Harlen Pepper decided to go their separate ways. His debut solo album "Ladies on the Corner" will be released on October 7th via Missed Connection Records and Edmonds has dropped a video for the lead single. "Love Can Be A Tunnel" has a laid back folk rock feel with a cool chord progression and hypnotic vocal melodies. The song is about some ladies on the corner that he would talk to before heading into the studio in downtown Hamilton. The song shows there are different tunnels of love with the first verse being rather dark and the second becoming more positive. The video was directed by Taylor Heres. He’ll be at The Dakota Tavern on October 7th before heading on a tour to Western Canada. – Kris Gies

Buzz Records band Weaves have recently dropped their debut self titled LP. Seems like everyone is excited about it from Toronto to Europe where they will be headed very soon. Female fronted indie rock with an edge. The rhythm grooves while the guitar and synth lay sweet hooks. The initial comparison would go to fellow Toronto band Metric however Weaves sound way more creative both musically and lyrically. When they return from Europe they play the Mod Club on November 3rd. Ya best go see em before they take off on a new worldly adventure. Have a listen to "Birds & Bees" from their debut LP available now. – Kris Gies
