New Music Video: “Silly Me” (Feat. Young Savage) – Alexander Charles
Alexander Charles, a.k.a. Azar formerly of the hip-hop collective Ground Up, recently released some new material as a well as a music video for the track "Silly Me" (featuring Young Savage). As he describes his rise via the hustle, Charles progresses from cruising along on a deserted highway alone on a bike to "luckily" hitching a ride with an attractive femme fatale in a sweet, red Cadillac convertible. While things appear on the upswing, the plot takes a drastic twist, which proves the old adage – "never hitch a ride with a stranger" – even if she’s quite fine.
The End of America Album Release Show at JB’s Sept. 8
Philadelphia-based The End of America are celebrating the release of their self-titled album tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. The group’s tight harmonies carry strong lyrics that are cradled within dark, modern Americana and rock songs that are highly memorable. The record aches with hope for ourselves and our world, and is a personal voyage for the artist as much as it is for the listener. It’s a big, polished sound from the local trio. Joining them for support this evening is Pete Hill, sharing his sometimes funky, sometimes soulful, sometimes quirky, and always fun brand of sonics. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Keith Kelley
Teenender play O’Brien’s Pub on 9.14
Formed in 2015, Teenender began as an indie pop duo consisting of brothers Brian and Chris McKenna. The two released their debut EP t e e n e n d e r in June of 2015. It was a smooth and upbeat collection of synthpop tracks that channeled the bounciness of 80’s pop. This summer they returned as a four-piece with their new single “Beat That Invites Me” (streaming), which featured their velvety optimistic sound, but with a more laid back vibe that incorporates drums and guitars. Teenender will be playing O’Brien’s Pub on September 14th! – John Honan
Power-pop trio Metalleg to play Union Pool 9/17
Good music has the tendency to grip the listener, but great punk grabs the listener by the shoulders and throws them headfirst into the pit before they have a grip on what’s happening. Self described "gutter pop" trio Metalleg is a NYC-based punk band that produces explosive tracks with such immediately compelling hooks, you’d be hard pressed to not find yourself instantly diving in. "Hit of the Week" is the band’s most recent release and is the sum of 10 tracks — most of which clock in under the two minute mark — and offers a non-stop jaunt through classic NYC-punk sounds. Landing somewhere in between the Cars and the Ramones, Metalleg’s music is sure to warm its way into your gray matter, and get stuck in your ears long after the songs have stopped. Catch them headling at Union Pool Sept 17th alongside Gorilla, Wyldlife and Cozy and in the meantime, listen to the link below. – Olivia Sisinni
New Track: “Forever” – Slaughter Beach, Dog
Welcome, the new album from Slaughter Beach, Dog, which is led by Jake Ewald (Modern Baseball), will be released on September 30 via Lame-O Records. Its latest single, “Forever” (which recently premiered at American Songwriter), hits a heavier backend start, before a twirling guitar pattern branches out into a set of booming tones. The song negotiates melody along the catchy yet complicated narrative. (Photo by Mimi Hong)
MATLOCK EXPRESSWAY – POP PUNK FROM THE ‘SHWA
Comin’ from the eastern suburb of Oshawa is a 4 piece indie band called “Matlock Expressway”. They have a nicely polished pop punk sound that anyone who grew up listening to the likes of Sum 41 would easily be able to grasp on to. Punchy n’ tight. Happy tunes that are also kinda sad. Their new EP “Why Is This Time Any Different” was released last month and features 5 tunes. Most of which could be on the next American Pie soundtrack… – Kris Gies

New American Trappist LP Available for Streaming & Purchase
A compilation of three puzzle-piece-like EPs, the self-titled debut full-length album from American Trappist, a.k.a. Joe Michelini (formerly of River City Extension) is a testament to haunting exuberance. Planting oneself in the spellbinding stories seems second nature, as the internal contemplations spill outward as precise yet stream-of-consciousness manifestations, capturing personal chapters with universal themes. That folk/Americana jangles in a fresh-air sense of freedom, while reverberating in an eerie echo, stirring the surroundings into a slight crisp chill. On Saturday, October 22, you can join American Trappist at Bourbon & Branch on a billing that also includes Madalean Gauze and Chet Williams among others presented by Death Salon Records, and you can also stream his new LP HERE.
Lunifred Benjamin releases new single “Atheist Anthem”
Brooklyn-based musician, Lunifred Benjamin – who recently played Rough Trade – crosses genre lines with his mellow prog-folk, while evoking a rootsier-sounding Destroyer with a voice reminiscent of Girls’ Christopher Owens. In his most recent release, “Atheist Anthem” Benjamin also strays away from common subjects, claiming “Nobody knows what happens when you die” and bringing up (unsurprisingly given the title) the topic of atheism in a rather casual tone. Using strings and subtle guitar riffs, Lunifred Benjamin obviously enjoys to be in a category all his own, leaving us wondering what unexpected musical elements he can bring next. – Madeleine Grossman
The Movies
The Movies, Will Cuneo, Sarah Cuturic, and Sam Brown, have released a new EP, Angeline. The 5 song EP was recorded at The Public House back in July.
New Music Video: “Curse Of The Sun” – Nothing
Last week, we posted director Jimmy Hubbard’s "Try To Disappear" video for Baroness, which was made up of live performance and backstage footage. This week, Hubbel gives Philly’s own Nothing the similar treatment; however, he captures the hazy, drug-induced feelings of the band’s music during editing for the single "Curse Of The Sun". Embrace its hallucinogenic warmth. Nothing is currently on an extensive European tour that will be pushing forward into the middle of next month.
