Ortlieb’s will be hosting a show this evening celebrating a pair of new releases. With their latest album Time Traveler (which was co-produced with Jeff Zeigler) slated for release on September 16, the quartet of The Bigness hits the ground running as Kristin Bigness’s vocals craft an intimate yet fiercely powerful setting. Coated in layers of polished rock instrumentation that still holds an emotional grip, the group hits melodic touchstones while an extra gear breaks them loose. With her self-titled full-length debut, Liz de Lise weaves an elegant, vocal-oriented, folk-jazz hybrid, often eliciting an emotional response. However, the sounds can also carry a bubbly, pop sensibility. The tumbling Americana-flavored rock of Flat Mary Road will also get things started. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. Third St., 8pm, $10, 21+ -Michael Colavita

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Pretty Words
The Deli DC Area’s Record of the Month: Go Cozy – “Glaziao”
Named after the Puerto Rican slang word for perfect surfing conditions, Go Cozy’s debut full length Glaziao is a warm and hypnotic release that takes inspiration from ethereal acts such as The Sundays and The LA’s. The quintet creates deeply personal music while wielding airy guitar tones and lush melodies. Lyrically, the album touches on themes of self-loathing, introspection, and damaging love, while warm shimmering guitars and graceful harmonies from front-man Homero Salazar Andrujovich and Maria Sage keep Go Cozy’s music delightfully upbeat. Definitely an enjoyable find. – John Honan

With rapid-fire menace that hits like a sludge hammer, the trio of Backslider seemingly operates on one mode – full-bore. One can hear their instrumental onslaught approach from as far as those roaring guttural vocals can call out. And the deep-churning backend projects a ferociously imposing ominous tone, ripping through any obstacle that lies in its path with unblinking eyes. NYC rockers Dead Heavens play St. Vitus on 9/20
Walter Schreifels is a NYC hardcore heavyweight, maybe best known for playing guitar for bands like Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today, so you wouldn’t expect his latest project to be a fuzzy, 70’s-feel rock band with a barefaced classic sound. But that’s exactly what Dead Heavens is. The group, which also features members from White Zombie and Cults, lays down luscious driving instrumentals with strong vocals lines that are instantly addictive. Their stand out track is "Feel Low" (streaming below) a tune that matches heavy, fuzzy riff-age with floating melodic vocals–a pairing that’s not entirely expected. Carve it up any way you’d like, but Dead Heavens is an unabashed return-to-roots band, churning out delicious licks that hit right in the gut. Check out "Feel Low" below, and if you’re hungry for more, see them live at St. Vitus on 9/20 with the Space Merchants and Gondola. – Olivia Sisinni

New Music Video: “Atom Bomb” – Beach Slang
A volatile relationship may lead to some good sex. Well, that’s what we’ve gathered from Beach Slang‘s latest video for the explosive "Atom Bomb". Directed by Jason Lester, we find ourselves voyeurs, watching as a torrid, bi-polar relationship survives through primal instincts. If we were privy to viewing how it plays out, we’d probably become witnesses to some type of Sid & Nancy ending. Aww…crazy love! "Atom Bomb" will appear on the bands forthcoming album, A Loud Bash Of Teenage Feelings, that is set to go off on September 23 via Polyvinyl Records. (Photo by Ian Laidlaw)
Robot Princess celebrates release of single ‘Claudia’ at Cake Shop on 9.15
New York indie rock outfit Robot Princess have just released a brand new single entitled “Claudia”, which takes its name from The Baby-Sitters Club character. Despite their lighthearted approach, the band was formed out of singer and guitarist Beau Alessi’s desire to express himself seriously through songwriting while living in Maine after college. The track relies on the heavy use of metaphors to convey the widely shared unhappiness that comes with living with a partner who is probably not right for you. While the song maintains a heavy guitar driven sound, its catchy verses and choruses establish a bouncy pop vibe. The four-piece will be celebrating the release of their new track at Cake Shop on September 15th! – John Honan
