Matriculating from awakening instrumentation, “Who Said It First”, the new demo from Kississippi, hints at continued future excellence. The tiptoeing intermingling of guitar and keys wraps itself around the intimate vocals, drawing one toward the magnetic warmth. The band is heading out on tour in three weeks so purchase the demo to help make life a bit easier for the group on the road. Kississippi will be performing next in Philly on Wednesday, September 21 at Bourbon & Branch with CLOAKZ and Hodera.
Crushed Out premieres new video “Love Howl”
The newest bare-knuckled single/video combo from Brooklyn-based duo Crushed Out, "Love Howl," delivers blaring, bluesy garage rock reminiscent of powerful bands like Jack White’s side project Dead Weather. The track lives up to its name, with vocals yelping their way through fuzzy guitars, and a primal drumbeat. The video is DIY-ish but drips with animal magnetism, pairing the tune with images of mystical, half-human creatures losing themselves to their mating calls. (Why humans don’t do mating calls by the way? Let’s bring them back, NYC!) Be sure to catch Crushed Out at their Le Poisson Rogue album release show on September 28 with High Waisted, Caged Animals, and Prima. –Olivia Sisinni
NAH Opening for Mykki Blanco at PhilaMOCA Sept. 15
Menacing, bombastic beats that authoritatively engulf their surroundings, shifting the dial in a raw-real street style that hits now while pointing toward the future, NAH smacks with sonics. While percussion consistently asserts its presence, atmosphere-altering, electronic sequences illustrate the morphing, combative setting in which this music resides. Simultaneously meshing dark, dramatic structures with dance grooves tying in a sense of torment with vocal aggression, the results are an ear-popping, edgy, experimental brand of hip-hop. Tonight at PhilaMOCA, he lays the groundwork, at this R5-presented show, for Mykki Blanco, whose debut solo album Mykki will be released tomorrow. Miranda Inanunza plays SOB’s on 9/26
On her Soundcloud profile, NYC RnB artist Miranda Inzunza says she "lowkey, wants to be the female Drake" and, although she still has a loooong way to go, she might be on the right path. Her output to date bears some sonic but mostly thematic (the lady doesn’t rap) resemblances to the music of the self described "God of Toronto." Floating on gracefully produced atmospheric tracks flirting with trip hop and ambient, her vocals have the perfect weight to them, allowing her lyrics, often about the pitfalls of relationships, to feel completely genuine, rather than sappy or overwrought. On her latest "Take (feat. JAHS)" she sings over airy, electronic and slightly trappy production about a partner that only "takes, takes, takes;" the beat perfectly emphasizes the vocals/lyrics and vice versa. Our favorit track ‘The Beginning’ (streaming below) is a dreamy electronic track expressing the love for the initial stages of relationships. Miranda Inanunza is one to watch, and if you happen to be in NYC, you can do so live at SOB’s on 9/26. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber
New Track: “Funk’d” – Miles High
The debut EP from Miles High is due out later this month. “Funk’d” balances the raw edge of electric guitar against the continuous, smooth bump of bass and vamping electro-key tones. The infusion of rising communal vocals punctuates as the vibrant beat is given ominous inflections of tolling bells. It’s a freeing jam!

Discovered at the Otis Mountain Get Down Fest: Khruangbin
I was at Otis Mountain Get Down this weekend in Elizabethtown, NY, and the band Khruangbin headlined Saturday night and provided me with one of the best musical experiences of my entire life. Aside from the fact that Otis is my favorite music festival, this was just the most amazing psych-rock band to see late at night. They’re a trio from Houston, Texas, and they draw inspiration from the late-’60s psychedelic funk stylings of Thailand. They had an amazing vibe, and incredibly subtle-yet-tight drummer (think Bernard Purdie), and the flyest guitar sounds.
It’s also worth mentioning that Otis is an incredible music festival. The curator, Quillan George, lives in Oregon now but went to college in Burlington and was/is a big part of the music curation scene there. The whole lineup was stellar. The band Lewis Del Mar (on the cover of The Deli’s 2016 SXSW issue) was also really amazing. – Dan Rome
Video Premiere: “Sobering Up” – Very Bad Vibes
“Sobering Up,” the new video that we are premiering today from Very Bad Vibes, a.k.a. Sam Huntington (formerly of The Original Crooks and Nannies), finds the subject beating himself. The footage (shot by Katie Huntington) enlists simple yet effective chalk and sharpie titles, before showcasing the one-sided battering. Simplicity rules the day, and the music’s energetic bounce meshes with the display of exorcising personal demons, pulled back in intensity by the playful placement/use of ketchup. You can find "Sobering Up" opening his debut solo effort, Toothpaste.
A Deli NYC Video Premiere: Googie – “Big Mouth Arcade”
Pair up Jimi Hendrix’s penchant for psychedelia and Luda’s gravelly inflection and you get a close approximation to the Jersey-cum-Queens rapper affectionately known as Googie. Prolific member of the intrepid Karma Kids label, Goog’s newest album ‘Tis What ‘Tis builds on an already impressive catalog of work with a tighter, more polished, and enthralling release. The Deli is proud to premiere his new video for “Big Mouth Arcade.” Produced by Blockhead, this banger is a glimpse at his mania via the streets of his West New York neighborhood. ‘Tis What ‘Tis is available here. – BrokeMc
Goldfeather celebrates release of ‘Patchwork Quilt’ at Rockwood on 09.19
With their elegant blend of bluegrass, folk, and chamber music, Brooklyn indie-folk band Goldfeather is on a mission to enchant you with a perfectly interlaced entourage of instruments. Sarah Goldfeather’s violin, Nathan Koci’s banjo and accordion, Dylan McKinstry’s mandolin, Katie Martucci’s guitar, and Pat Swoboda’s double bass surround the sweet-sounding vibrancy of Sarah’s vocals with dream-like arrangements. The band’s signature three-part vocal harmony serves to heighten Sarah’s fluctuating melodies, resolve musical tension, and add a rich texture to the group’s overall sound. You can experience Goldfeather live at Rockwood Music Hall on September 19th, when they’ll celebrate the release of their debut album Patchwork Quilt. – Ashley E. Muniz
