Lubec’s Cosmic Debt Out Today, Release Show Tomorrow

It’s been two years since we were gifted Lubec‘s lauded The Thrall and finally today, we get their second full length with Cosmic Debt.

Thematically exploring karmic debenture in life, Cosmic Debt gifts us the Lubec we’ve grown to love over the years; dreamgaze personified by reverbed string riffs, eruptive drumming by Matt Dressen and vocals that call for attention.

Four fuzzy instrumental-like interludes break up a pleasant distortion of tracks, led by layers of Eddie Charlton’s ripe vocality. Piano playing by Caroline Jackson adds a slightly delicate but necessary element which, coupled with her sometimes rawly spurted vocals (like in the album’s title track), round out the sound that separates Lubec from other "gazey" acts in town.

Lubec’s release show for Cosmic Debt is tomorrow at Blackwater with supporting performances from Talkative, Dog Thieves, Two Moons and Radler.

PREMIERE: Ky Burt – “Deep Dark Woods”

Capturing the true tree-lined spirit of the Pacific Northwest, the newest single and video from multi-instrumentalist Ky Burt, "Deep Dark Woods," expands on the calming aura of the nature surrounding us, both visually and sonically.

Recorded in a tiny house along the Willamette River in St. Johns, "Deep Dark Woods" applies classic American roots style with an avant-indie-folk breath in expressing the contrasting vulnerability and self-actualization experienced in solitude and times of strife. The song’s video, which shows Burt performing live at Fluff & Gravy and exploring through the local woods of Macleay Park, was shot by Brianna Barrett and does a mighty fine job at conveying the curiousity of journeying through Oregon’s shrub.

"Deep Dark Woods" comes off of Burt’s debut EP The Moon & the Sea, due out October 4th. His release show for the EP will be held this tomorrow, October 1st at Alberta Street Pub.

Grunge rockers Big Cheese drop new LP “Supersonic Nothing”

The Nirvana comparisons for Brooklyn’s own Big Cheese are really easy – and definitely there – but complemented by other unexpected influences – for example, in Adam Patten’s vocals we hear a little of Soul Coughing, a criminally underrated Brooklyn band from the late ’90s. Supersonic Nothing, the Big Cheese’s latest LP, is a lo-fi whirlwind combining sludgy, sledge hammer riffs with vocals that always seem to be teetering on the brink of a nervous collapse. If grunge isn’t dead, Big Cheese are the ones who are here to prove it. Check out their new music video "Thank You" below. – Olivia Sisinni

Malion Exudes Dirgy Grunge Themes On New “Underground” Video

 Malion are a trio of grunge purveyors who exude dirgy garage rock sounds with harrowing vocals.  Having released their first EP back in 2014, Malion just released  their latest EP, Troglodyte, which bubbles and ruptures into a sludge-filled void of musical darkness.  The band’s latest music video for their song “Underground” mirrors their sound in it’s roughshod production and depiction of grimy downtown ennui.  While Malion may still be an ‘underground’ band, they’ve got an oddly infectious disaffected charm that seeps through to listeners.  Check out their new music video here:

Weekend Warrior, September 30 – October 2

Delicate is a concise characterization of the new album from Hello Shark, a.k.a. Linc Halloran. Officially released today via Chicago’s Orindal Records, the album plays like an unhinged door into Halloran’s head. Lyrically keen observations, anecdotes, and imagery paint an autumnal exposure as the songs mimic the soon-to-be sparsely-adorned trees. One gravitates toward the uninhibited exposure reminiscent to Pavement and Bright Eyes, as that relatable, melodic sense of melancholy aches with honesty and shivers with warmth. Encoding the fresh breath of catharsis with dense yet airy pockets of samples and instrumentation, Power Animal, a.k.a. Keith Hampson, captivates, while the enchanting, low-key serenade of Seattle’s Mega Bog and the bright but turbulent tones of Baltimore’s Amanda Glasser complete this billing. New Music Video: “Moonshine” – Dirty Dollhouse

We already knew that Dirty Dollhouse could hit them high notes. However, with singer-songwriter Chelsea Mitchell’s latest single, "Moonshine," you can feel how low the depths of her music can get. It’s the first offering from her upcoming album Vinyl Child, which was co-produced by Brian Dale Allen Strouse (of The Lawsuits) and is a departure from the previous 25 Shades. The track is also accompanied by a daydreamy music video, directed by Bob Sweeney. You can catch Dirty Dollhouse performing live next Thursday, October 6 at Bourbon & Branch in support of Dylan Jane‘s EP release show.

Emily Afton Releases Her New Album – Archetype

Bay Area based singer-songwriter, Emily Afton has released a new collection of hauntinly beautiful songs. Her album is entitled, Archetype and can be heard in its entirety via Soundcloud.com. We’re always excited to share new music with The Deli readers and this new album is a total gem!

Archetype is a crossroads of Emily Afton’s path as a songwriter. It brings together new ideas & old concepts, taps into her psyche, and draws from the canon of contemporary tastes while creating something distinct. The album is indicative of Afton’s changing artistic tides, ebbing from guitar and piano driven folk and flowing to alt pop circuitry and back over a period of about a year. Her decision to change her name from ‘Emily Moldy’ (her last name is Moldenhauer, Afton is her middle name) was also inspired by the broadening musical horizons in full view on Archetype. The album is a perfect introduction to Afton’s inspired persona, drawing the listener in close with a Siren’s song that stops before the rocks get too close.

Batya unveils songs from debut EP, plays Rockwood on 11/12

In her debut EP (to be released soon, but most tracks are available for streaming on her Soundcloud page) Batya passes an important litmus test for any emerging songwriter: being able to convincingly convey emotion. A self-described dream pop artist, the 19 year old New York artist introduces herself with "What’s my name," a track that walks the line between folk and pop ballad. Batya’s best asset is her haunting, ringing yet expressive voice, which drips with sadness in a way that resonates well with the song’s somber tone. Her lyrics too do a good job of conveying the track’s emotional qualities, as she asks herself a series of existential questions that remain unanswered. Pinkwash Plays Host to Slow Mass at Everybody Hits Sept. 30

Situated along the western edge of Northern Liberties on Girard is batting cage and DIY venue Everybody Hits, who this week will be hosting a stacked set headed by Philly’s own Pinkwash.  The duo of Joey Doubek and Ashley Arnwine churns out intensely gripping tunes that are as swift as they are leaden, captivating a wide array of attention in the music community, while finding homes for their releases on labels Sister Polygon and Don Giovanni Records. The band’s name is derived from the term "pinkwashing," which refers to the often unregulated practice of companies aligning their products and brands with cancer awareness and LGBTQ movements without necessarily contributing to those causes. Pinkwash will be joined by fellow Philadelphians Lithuania and Loose Tooth, as well as Chicago-based musical outlet Slow Mass. Slow Mass are currently on tour in support of their new EP Treasure Pains, released earlier this month via Landland. They draw sonic inspiration from associated acts Into It. Over It., My Dad and Former Thieves, while distinguishing their new project as an exciting endeavor with plenty of potential for new material. Everybody Hits, 527 W.
