Earth Heart to release debut LP on 8/5

Posted on:

While the two are often correlated, it’s not always necessary for music that’s catchy to be pristine as well. Boston band Earth Heart is a prime example of this: with their shout-sung vocals, swampy drums and lo-fi guitars, they do their darn best to produce a sound that’s abrasive, but thanks to the great songwriting, their music is still very satisfying. While mostly sticking to this garage pop sound on their previous tracks, such as recent single "Homesick" (streaming below), the Boston trio has shown the ability to pull off more "avant" stuff as well, like in their nearly nine minute track "BURN" from 2014. This versatility and talent should make their debut LP, due on 8/5, interesting to say the least. Earth Heart also made an appearance on WEMF radio’s Sticky Hits program on 5/28, and will be performing live at the pin Out of the Blue Too Art Gallery on July 13th. – Henry Solotaroff-Webber

Emo band Save Face releases Folly EP, plays Gold Sounds on 7/17

Posted on:

Every time it seems like the emo sub-genre is finally on its last legs, a band swoops in with fresh, revitalizing sounds, and this time it’s Trenton’s own Save Face coming to the rescue with their Folly EP.  Though outwardly emo, the key to their unique sound is their subtle enfolding of other genre influences into their music and inventive dynamic shifting. Huge dynamic shifts are the name of the game in emo, but Save Face take it one step further through further contrasting their loud and soft sections in their musical makeups. Their louder sections of their songs are definitely emo, with screamed vocals, distorted guitars and the whole nine yards, but their softer sections mix in indie folk vocals, indie rock guitar, and a funky rhythm section that allows Save Face’s songs to stand out in how they are strikingly progress and diversely composed. Folly can be streamed now on Alternative Press, and you can catch Save Face live at Gold Sounds on 7/17. —Henry Solotaroff-Webber

Brooklyn band Color Tongue’s latest single "Sprouts" is one of those rare songs where fun and experimentation coexist peacefully, integrating each other. On it, the self-described "dirty psych pop" quartet take an imaginative approach to songwriting, conjuring up dramatic dynamic shifts, unusual song structure and exuberant melodies. "Sprouts" is a strong initial introduction to their debut LP of the same name, scheduled for a summer release. The band should have some shows in August – stay tuned! —Henry Solotaroff-Webber

Allison Crutchfield Signs to Merge Records

Posted on:

Congrats to Allison Crutchfield (Swearin’, P.S. Eliot), who just announced that she’ll be joining her sis, Katie Crutchfield (a.k.a. Waxahatchee), on the roster at Merge Records! Her yet-to-be-titled LP will be out next year. Here’s what Allison had to say about this momentous occasion.

“Signing with Merge was always sort of a fantasy milestone in my mind, like winning an Oscar or opening a bakery in New England. It was something I dreamed about a hundred times as a teenager but never thought could actually happen. I’ve been fortunate enough to really get to know the Merge family over the last year, and now that I’m a grown-up, I’m so grateful to be able to call Merge home.”

Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler have a new LP coming out, called Music Inspired by Phillippe Garrel’s Le Révélateur. It’s an original soundtrack/score for the short experimental film that is meant to capture the civil unrest occurring in Paris in May, 1968, which lead to a virtual halt of the French economy. The footage was purposely left silent. The album comes out on July 22 via Thrill Jockey, and the duo, who premiered the live soundtrack, along with the movie, in February at the Getty Museum in LA and has already performed it twice in Philly, will be bringing the event to Brooklyn on Tuesday, July 26 at the Nitehawk Cinema. Pretty Words Breakout at The Pharmacy July 7

Posted on:

A steady, tempered, rolling rumble can escalate with stampeding momentum, as relaxed yet emotively-stained vocals ooze, steering with attitude. Pretty Words create an unimposing, gently-simmering vibe. Loose, curling guitar licks wrap around backend, which push forward as the lyrics seep in, and those cruise-controlling tones lie in wait to breakout, generating enthusiastic energy. The band just released a new self-titled EP last month, its second of 2016. Tonight at The Pharmacy, they’ll be joined by the union of exposed fragility and determined resilience, otherwise known as Broken Beak, and the heady-pop combination of Wilkes-Barre quartet Spur. The somber, crawling volatility of Horse Jumper of Love will also slowly seep into your skin, while the robust, detail-enriched, contagious dynamics of The Island of Misfit Toys complete this lineup. EZTV unveils single ‘High Flying Faith’ from upcoming LP + plays The Bell House on 07.15

Posted on:

As further proof that youngsters, at some point, tend to "become" their parents, Brooklyn trio EZTV seems to have transictioned to a revival tinged, but richer and more vibrant sound, directly inspired to the psychedelic pop of the ’60s. New single "High Flying Faith" sounds like a tribute to The Byrds, while maintaining a fresh and modern sound. The bright, chiming tone of the guitars is a striking new element, while the guest vocals from Jenny Lewis, whom the band will be supporting on tour this summer, integrate Ezra Tenenbaum’s already dreamy melodies in ways that scream "Flower Power!" EZTV will be playing the Bell House on July 15th in support of Miracle Legion and Out in the Streets Festival on July 16th before heading out with Lewis. Their album High In Place will be released on September 30th via Captured Tracks. – John Honan

Brooklyn Lo-Fi grunge duo Brainfreeze plays Aviv on 07.08

The New York-based lo-fi grunge duo Brainfreeze is comprised of NYC born drummer Zoë Brecher and guitarist María Villar of Madrid. The two met when Villar was studying in the US, and have since released a two-song demo and two singles. Their latest single “Role Model” (streaming below) was produced by Diego Garcia of The Parrots, and while it only clocks in at 83 seconds, the song is a burst of frenetic energy and raw emotion that is buzzing with garage rock punk and grung influencese. Brecher and Villar share vocal duties on the track as they shout the lines “I will be your role model”. The band just played a show with fellow Madrid rockers Hinds at the House of Vans in Brooklyn, and will be performing at Aviv on July 8th in support of Baby Birds Don’t Drink Milk. – John Honan

Exclusive Deli Austin Premiere: Strange Mother “Young Buck EP”

Posted on:

The Deli Austin is superduper pumped up to bring you lovers of music, especially those with a taste for something a little off-kilter, one hell of a premiere today! From that quirky band that used to be named after Persian stew, and which now goes by Strange Mother, comes the delightfully dynamic Young Buck EP.

This here record is four tracks of gleeful oddball indie pop, its influences and genres all swirled together in a mad pop music science experiment run by a pack of giddy, ultra-talented weirdos. You’ll hear bits of tejano, a ballroom jazzy thing, some avant 70s rock noisiness and more, all mixed in with the heavy dose of indie freak rock that is Strange Mother’s signature sound. The resulting concoction is a little Deerhoof, a little Evangelicals, a little Man Man, even a little Tull or Zappa, and all good, old-fashioned, full-blown creative experimentation in the form of fun and catchy pop songs.

Like any good weirdo pop, there’s a lot to unwrap in Young Buck, if you’re looking to dive into something technical, but Strange Mother has also shown (again) with this record that they can make artsy weirdo avant pop that’s super accessible and just plain great to jam out to. That’s honestly a real damn hard thing to do, and the ease with which these guys accomplish it puts Strange Mother at the front of the pack when it comes to Austin bands that are pushing the envelope, but who can also structure out a seriously complex piece of music.

This is the first this absolutely excellent EP has seen the public, so be one of the first to arrive at this mad party Strange Mother has invited us to by listening below, and check the band out at their Facebook for more from one of Austin’s most creatively ambitious and most technically skilled bands right now.
