This year’s Mississippi Street Fair could brighten up your week

Posted on:

The 2016 Mississippi Street Fair is TOMORROW and it couldn’t have come at a better time in the week with all of the awful, tragic occurrences in the news lately. Starting at 10am, the street fair will be hosting almost 40 bands along with two beer gardens, a rib-off competition, a dunk tank and the awarding of the Mayor of Mississippi Ave….all for free!

Five different stages will base all the artists at different intersections along Mississippi Ave., with one fully dedicated to music for the kids. Get your fill of r&b and soul with Blossom and Ural Thomas & the Pain, dance out of this world with Dreckig, go into an indie daze with Candace and Little Star, and try not to get confused by the three-in-a-row lineup of Jackson Boone, Boone Howard and Barna Howard at the Courtyard Stage, plus so much more.

More information on the lineup and the other festivities, check out Mississippi Ave.’s website.

Them Animals take the stage at Velvet Lounge on 8.17

Posted on:

With fuzzy chords and a sound that rivals the roar of a V8 american muscle car Them Animals sounds like the kind of band that makes your friends dingy basement party feel like the best place you’ve ever been. The guitars power through creating an infectious garage rock melody tinged with a touch of blues and vocals that have been drenched in distortion. The chorus of their recent release, Losing Feeling (streaming below), burns mighty like a track doused in gasoline and set ablaze making you want to sway and jump around, bringing a pinch of unpredictable chaos to the otherwise very tight and controlled melodic party. Listen to Them Animals below and catch them live at Velvet Lounge on August 17. – Adriana S. Ballester

Fire Nuns prove they’re a fire band

Posted on:

We’re not sure what you’re sleeping on if you haven’t heard of Fire Nuns yet. Their debut album, Dad, Jr., came out back in 2013 and has served as the provenance for what has only so far proven to be an unending stream of successes. Now three studio/house releases and a live recording of their KPSU set deep, the boys are finishing up a slew of performances to record some new material.

It’s not exactly definite exactly when or what we’ll be seeing from Fire Nuns, but if it’s anything like the Ty Segall meets the Orwells styled crop they’ve droppd so far, it’ll definitely be a delight. Their self titled release from March was full of banger cuts that traverse a specturm of distinct punk to a fuzzy blur of addicting garage.

Fire Nuns last played the Woodstock! mini fest at the Convent on the 4th of July and we’re not sure when their next show is, but make it a point to see them live. Congrats on being the newest Artists of the Month, boys!

Check out the recording of their live KPSU set below and enjoy your new favorite band.

Who said a beautiful melody is necessary to create a great song? SOFI TUKKER‘s’s gone viral single Drinkee (brand new video below) features a one-note melodic phrase repeated over and over pretty much from the beginning to the end of the song – and we’ll never get tired of it! Dream Pop act Uni Ika Ai releases single ‘Make You Better’ + announces LP

Posted on:

In recent years dream pop has become a big part of the "NYC sound" – probably only second to garage rock. Although Brooklyn-based quartet Uni Ika Ai, founded by Lucius’ Peter Lalish and Toebow’s Maia Friedman’s, can surely be categorized under the dream pop umbrella, they have the merit to steer clear from the genre’s canonized influences (Cocteau Twins, Mazzy Star and Broadcast). In “Make You Better,” the band’s first single, Friedman’s voice draws an airy, slow melody over a glittering musical background where guitars and keyboards merge into each other, like colors do in paintings by the Impressionists. Baroque and classical elements emerge here and there, and new layers come to the surface or are exhausted as the song progresses. Their debut album, Keeping A Golden Bullseye In The Corner of My Mind will be released in mid October. Uni Ika Ai will begin a residency at C’Mon Everybody on July 13th.

Weekend Warrior, July 8 – 10

Nothing captivated listeners with 2014’s Guilty of Everything, and with its follow-up, the band triumphs over tragedy, as you may have seen in their documentary for the making of Tired of Tomorrow. And as the group gets ready to leave it all on stage across the globe, Philly’s band of nothings-turned-somethings makes a stop home to celebrate with family, friends and fans the joy and heartache that has come with their latest release. Opening the night will be instrumental avant-garde duo, Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler, who are looking forward to the release of their own LP next week, which was inspired by Phillippe Garrel’s silent film Le Révélateur. They’ll be helping Nothing wrap up the first leg of their massive tour. Also along for the support will be San Francisco Bay Area’s Culture Abuse and Toledo, OH/Detroit, MI’s Citizen. Baroque-pop band Thin Lear plays Pianos on 7/9

Posted on:

Even when singing about being “bored to death” or “sick in bed,” Queens-based band, Thin Lear has the ability to sound light and carefree. Even “seven days without sleep” seem like a walk in the park – a testament to endurance, surely a handy quality for any independent musician! In the Thin Lear EP Matt Longo – the man and voice behind the baroque-pop project – creates waves of nostalgia, supported by tastefully restrained melodies and his gentle voice. The record (the project’s fourth release since 2011) makes endearing references to New York City and single “Second Nature” (streaming) uses light, yet dynamic instrumentation along with subtle calipso influences.  You can catch him at Pianos tomorrow (July 9th). – Madeleine Grossman

Embrace Bondage & Discipline at Ortlieb’s July 8

Posted on:

Electro-rock outfit Bondage & Discipline meshes a breezy, synth/percussion-compassed sound, with a slightly ominous, heavy undercurrent. The end game is one that utilizes layered, harmony-fueled vocals, with a ceaseless-moving instrumental base, capturing warmth while hinting at impending chills. The group will release its debut LP Love Me Like I’m Dead via a series of smaller song groupings; the first, No One, will be released on July 12. Unifying waves of jangly, fuzzed guitar with a locked-in snap and pop of bass and percussion and semi-spoken Lou Reed-inspired vocals, The Stammer helps fortify this billing at Ortlieb’s, which also features the back alley synth explorations of Blood Sound, who have a new album on the horizon, entitled True Romance Magazine. After releasing their debut EP Vail earlier this spring, the haunting post-punk of Brooklyn trio Decorum rounds out this goth dance party. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. Third St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

New Track: “Pick Up America” – My Son Bison

Posted on:

Local experimental-folk five-piece My Son Bison’s new single, “Pick Up America,” teases the sound of their forthcoming debut LP, Two Faces and a Vase. A subtle yet gripping groove is dictated via bass, keys, drums, etc., as the vocals prescribe a pleasant, whimsical melody before the song shifts into a somewhat chaotic, vocally-agitated conclusion. They’ll be performing on Tuesday, July 14 at Boot & Saddle with City of the Sun.
