Jackie Zealous set to release debut album

Posted on:

Following the one year anniversary of their EP, Jackie Zealous is set to release a debut album titled “Psychic Data”. The band based in Santa Cruz gave us a taste of the California beach experience with warm Indie pop/rock vibes in June 2015. The highlights of the one year old project are “Lucky Girls Lucky Boys” and “I Feel It”. Both tracks exude warm and laid back vocals interlaced with catchy guitar riffs. You can find Jackie Zealous EP on soundcloud, spotify or bandcamp. – Garrett Yee

Beeef bring their fun indie rock to Great Scott on 7/13

Posted on:

Despite having released quality material, Allston’s Beeef is a band that’s gone under most radars, including ours until now. Their 2015 release A BEEEF EP was notable for its textbook indie rock sound that at times verged into surf, alt and folk rock territories as well. No individual component stands out about Beeef’s music, but rather it’s their chemistry, tightness and the crisp nature of their sound that allows them to create catchy songs that sound familiar and fresh at the same time. Beeef have an upcoming show at Great Scott on 7/13, and this post on their Facebook page suggests they may have new music on the way. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber

New Music Video: “Somewhere Else” – Littler

Posted on:

Escape the chains of the workweek with Littler‘s new music video for "Somewhere Else"! Shot over several months during multiple tours, guitarist Dan Colanduno does a most excellent job at bringing the contrasting footage together, making it hard not to just walk out the door and never look back at your co-workers again. The video premiered over at She Shreds Magazine, where you can also learn more about the making of their latest release. (Anyone else wishing that there was an In-N-Out Burger in Philly right now?!)

Teenage Halloween take their brand of power-pop meets folk-punk on a NJ tour

Posted on:

Despite having 10 members whose ages range from 16 to 23, Teenage Halloween knows exactly the kind of music they want to play. The Asbury Park-based band takes cues from artists like Jeff Rosenstock, Elvis Costello, Defiance Ohio, and blink-182 to stir up an energetic blend of power-pop, folk, and punk . Although featuring a unique combination of instruments for a punk album like banjo, trombone, and saxophone, their latest EP It Was Weird, But It Worked never feels forced or gimmicky. Opening track “Waitress” is a brief song that calls to mind modern punk acts like Joyce Manor, while “Tiki Party” references the folk punk sound of fellow Jersey natives The Gaslight Anthem and Philly punk act The Menzingers. This summer Teenage Halloween will be playing several shows in New Jersey, the first one of which will be at Long Branch’s Brighton Bar. – John Honan

Buzz Alert: The Lemon Twigs sign to 4AD + unveil new single “These Words.”

Posted on:

We highlighted Long Island’s The Lemon Twigs in our recent Best of NYC 2016 issue, and it looks like the Long Island duo is set for an exciting year. The D’Addario brothers just announced their signing with legendary British label 4AD (now part of the Beggars’ Group), and unveiled vaguely Supertramp-esque new single ‘These Words’ – streaming below. The upcoming full length will be produced by Jonathan Rado, co-founder of Foxygen, who seems to be specializing in producing albums that offer a new take on the sound of the late ’60s and early ’70s. This is definitely a record we are looking forward to. Check out The Lemon Twig’s other recent single (also produced by Rado) "As Long As We’re Together."

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best mellow songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Saturday Night Sounds: Backbiter – Fvck the Bozos

Posted on:

Dream punks Backbiter are leaving for an East Coast tour next week and with their tour kickoff show TONIGHT (along with Seattle’s Vats, Mr. Wrong and Mini Blinds at the High Water Mark), tonight’s Saturday Night Sounds is in celebration of them.

It’s hard to choose just one track from Fvck the Bozos, so here’s all of them. The six tracks blast right by you quickly, each with a runtime under two minutes, so feel free to play it on repeat to get your fill.

Hopefully we’ll see more from Backbiter soon, but until then, good luck on your East Coast tour and with Plan-it-X Fest!

Snake Cheney give us a satisfying portion of “Bread”

Posted on:

It’s no secret that I’m generally into checking out music that student bands from MTSU are putting out. Sure, the top-notch production skills may not be there yet, but there’s a pure sort of expression that comes from an environment that leans on learning and growing rather than "making it" in a bigger music scene. The latest MTSU-born project worth your time is Bread by Snake Cheney, an album that is mercifully devoid of 70’s mustache rock covers despite what the title may lead you to believe. The Mac Demarco comparisons on some of the tracks are unavoidable, but there’s a bit more drive to be found here than the reigning jester of the indie rock royal court ever got around to mustering up. –Austin Phy

Love On The Streets Fest Reloaded at Paine’s Park July 9

Posted on:

Today is the rescheduled rain date for the second annual Love On The Streets Fest at Paine’s Park, and though the weather reports aren’t looking very promising today, I can only hope that the weathermen/women remain as inaccurate as they’ve always been. Presented by Wahoo’s Tacos, LOTS is back at it again with a reloaded lineup. The event, which supports the Franklin Pains Skatepark Fund (FPSF), includes a skateboarding competition that begins at 1pm (with a grand prize of $2000), and will be deejayed by Frank Sriracha, Fishtown Beats, and Aurize. Now, whether you’re taking in the live visual art of Distoart, Getup, and Victor Perez, or perusing the flea market for gems, you’ll want to stay hydrated and nourished with a convenient array of vendors that will include Eat-A-Pita, Philly Delicias, Pbon’s Fresh Phood of Philly, Lil’ Pop Shop, Sweet Lavender, HubBub Coffee, and of course, Wahoo’s, along with the Bud Light Beer Garden, which will be all at your disposal. And the icing on this proverbial cake will be a day loaded with a laundry list of fine local talent set to perform from noon till 9pm. On the slate, you’ll find Creepoid, Steady Hands, Mercury Girls, Amanda X, Vicky Speedboat, Hurry, Endless Taile, Weller, and RFA representing the City of Brotherly Love. Come out to support a good cause, and stimulate your senses – fuck the rain! Paine’s Park, N. 24th St., 12pm-10pm, Free, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Venus & the Moon play album release show at Hotel Café on 7/13

Posted on:

Venus & the Moon are Frally Hynes and Rain Phoenix, a collaborative duo that writes brooding country-folk that strikes a heavy balance between shimmering atmospherics and lumbering balladry. The hushed harmonies play a big part in ampliying some very insular emotions, a haunting quality that gives the songs off of their upcoming full-length, Brother, Son, a quiet power.

Brother, Son has an official date of July 15 via Mother May I Records. The duo will also be celebrating the album release with a performance at Hotel Café on July 13. – Juan Rodríguez
