Plastic Picnic brings brings their laid-back pop to Rough Trade on 7/15

Posted on:

Plastic Picnic’s light indie pop is the result of two duos – Lute and Panerio, and Hunt and Taylor – coming together with compatible musical talents. The Brooklyn-based quartet’s name doesn’t quite capture the essence of their music, which, although incorporating synths, doesn’t sound as synthetic as the word ‘plastic’ would make one think. On the other hand, single Nausea in Paradise (streaming), would work nicely as a picnic soundtrack – notwithstanding the not very appetizing title.  Fans of sophisticated ’80s pop like Prefab Sprout should check these guys out at Rough Trade on July 15th.  – Madeleine Grossman

Bent Knee release new album, ‘Say So’

Posted on:

Bent Knee keeps going bigger and bolder with each project they release.  Never being afraid to blend genres before, on Say So the six-piece Boston band embarks on a sprawling musical journey that seems to hit every stop on the pop-avant garde spectrum. Not discrediting the band’s impressively diverse instrumental arrangements, frontwoman and keyboardist Courtney Swain’s cinematic vocals stand out as the sound’s core. Whereas the instruments and sounds around her are constantly changing, Swain’s voice provides an anchor that never lets the band’s complex sound descend into unruly juxtaposition of elements. Bent Knee are about to go on a North American and European tour to promote ‘Say So’. – Henry Solotaroff-Webber

Check out newly-formed band Narrow Waves

Posted on:

Out of Boston, Narrow Waves is a new indie-pop band whose alternating male/female vocals form a striking contrast. The two vocalists take turns singing about themes pertaining to love and relationships, while shimmering synth patterns and understated guitar riffs back them up to round out the band’s sound, which could be compared to R.E.M. from the ‘Out of Time’ period. The band played their second ever show on May 28 at Cantab Lounge. —Henry Solotaroff-Webber

NJ’s Dentist releases debut LP ‘Ceilings’ on the 24th + plays Berling on the 25th

Posted on:

New Jersey quartet Dentist is about to release their wildly fun sophomore LP Ceilings just in time for summer. The album will be out on June 24th via Little Dickman Records, and features 10 uptempo tunes featuring catchy melodies contrasting with singer Emily Bornemann’s often dark lyrics. Ceilings is a consistent and cohesive piece of work, with songs that blend into one another. “Joel” (streaming below), one of the record’s darker tracks, starts as a slow psych ballad before exploding into the bright and upbeat sound the band established in the opening tracks, marrying elements of surf rock, pop punk, and dream pop. The band will be playing The Saint in Asbury Park on June 24th and Berlin in NYC on June 25th. – John Honan

New Final Showcase EP Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

Final Showcase might be "The Greatest Band You’ve Never Heard Of," well, according to the title of their new EP. And with the growing popularity of pop-punk and emo on the music landscape, especially in Philadelphia, we wouldn’t be suprised if the flegling outfit gets picked up by a label sooner than later. The band is made up of Joe Adams (rhythm guitar/vocals), Sean Flanagan (bass/vocals), and Ben Harkins (lead guitar), and it looks like they could use a permanent drummer so if you like what hear, get in touch.

New Music Video: “Michael” – Grubby Little Hands

Posted on:

In Grubby Little Hands‘ new music video for "Michael," off their latest album Garden Party, you find its protagonist stripping away the confines of his suit and changing into his charismatic wresting alter-ego before roaming the streets of Philadelphia. He’s embraced and gawked at by the unsuspecting passerbys before the lines of reality and imagination are blurred. The video was directed by filmmaker Brian Melton, a longstanding collaborative partner with the band, and stars Tom Tschop as the wannabe Ultimate Warrior. Grubby Little Hands will be performing next in Philly on Friday, July 29 at Boot & Saddle, opening for The Besnard Lakes.

Birdie Busch Record Release Show at Boot & Saddle June 18

Posted on:

Come help celebrate the fifth full-length album from Birdie Busch, Thunder Bridge, this evening at Boot & Saddle. Covering you in a warm blanket of cathartic storytelling, the innate, well-placed, rootsy vibe of the album allows the lyrics to lead the way in a traditional folk manner, while the instrumentation helps to accent the sonic setting in a twilight-twinkling, gently-rocking, peacefully-melodic kind of way. An evolving live score will be provided by the electro-traditional hybrid of The Ruins of Friendship Orchestra, which features Laura Baird, Jesse Sparhawk, Ben Warfield, Gretchen Lohse (Carol Cleveland Sings), John Petit (Callowhill), and Michael Dur. It’s a night of local music vets, showcasing Philly’s rich tradition of talent. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8:30pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

The Wilder Society performs tonight at Hotel Café, release debut EP next month

Posted on:

The Wilder Society are an emerging foursome that writes raptorous folk pop. They describe themselves as "wanderers, transplants, and vagabonds", which sounds precious by description, sure, but there’s a palpable genuineness that’s truly earned by way of strummy, wholesome harmonies and bucolic introspection. Their latest single, "The Lion’s Den", is a foot-stomping anthem that opens their debut EP of the same name with a wide-eyed optimism, though a further listen to their still-disclosed material exhibits a band whose writing is far more reflective than they initially come off as.

Even if The Lion’s Den is slated for a July 2016 release, the band is celebrating the release of the EP with a pre-release show tonight at Hotel Café. – Juan Rodríguez
