Boom Forest explores all different faces of electronica and folk on “Post Knight Errant”

Posted on:

Post Knight Errant, the latest from ex-Wisconsinite John Paul Roney’s Boom Forest project, explores a range of folk and electronica influences, deftly using the natural ebb and flow of that exploration to cover the entire spectrum of emotional experience. There’s a current of tenderness running through the album, but it proves to be tonally versatile and adapts to the highs and lows from song to song and within a single track. It’s a polished effort, and you ought to give the video a watch below and then go check out the entire album. –Austin Phy

Prism Tats plays at Teragram Ballroom on 5.21, debut LP out now

Posted on:

Prism Tats is the solo project of South African-born Garett van der Spek, a multi instrumentalist whose vicious garage rock is fully indebted to the early days of power pop. The compressed drums and tremolo guitars of singles like "Creep Out // Freak Out" are pure rock n’ roll at its most joyful and unforced, the kind that could perfectly soundtrack your favorite early eighties coming-of-age comedy. But behind its wound-up melodies lurks a smart and outspoken look into the intricacies of being an Angeleno, a city that’s greatly informed van der Spek’s now permanent vacation.

Prism Tats is opening for indie rock veterans Nada Surf this coming Saturday, May 21st at Teragram Ballroom. His debut self-titled Prism Tats is out now via Anti- Records. – Juan Rodríguez

Brooklyn punk staples The So So Glos Stream Upcoming Album ‘Kamikaze’

Posted on:

Brooklyn punk band, The So So Glos are currently streaming their upcoming album Kamikaze on the A.V. Club, officially out on May 20th. This is the band’s fifth full length release, and it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down; their fast paced punk with catchy pop hooks keeps their sound as youthful and fresh as it was on their first record. “It uses spirituality, sarcasm & metaphoric ‘verbal shotgun shells’ as ammunition. It’s also a party drink, so drink up & enjoy.” – says frontman Levi Zaru about the record. The perfectly described “verbal shotgun shells” featured on tracks like “Going Out Swingin’” contribute to make this a super-fun punk record, complete with tongue-in-cheek humor and singalong choruses. Having grown up in Brooklyn, the members of The So So Glos have gone beyond being just a band, becoming involved in fostering the local DIY scene founding two all ages venues that have helped keep the DIY spirit alive in New York City: Shea Stadium and The Market Hotel (before it closed and recently reopened). The band will be kicking off their North American Tour in support of the new record on May 19th with The Dirty Nil and Big Up. Stream the track "Missionary" below!

New Track: “Ft. Wayne Mermaids” – Honey Radar

Posted on:

Honey Radar will release their latest album Blank Cartoon via What’s Your Rupture on May 20. “Fort Wayne Mermaids”, the new song from Jason Henn and Co., balances soothing vocals over the groove created by merging twisting guitar lines and the steady snap of the backend. However in a flash, just as you begin to sink in to it’s over.  Honey Radar is scheduled to perform a record release show show at Kung Fu Necktie on May 31, with Telepathic, People Skills, and Life Stinks.

Friends of Noise seek to create a permanent all ages haven

Posted on:

The lack of all ages spaces in Portland is an obvious problem. Sure, we’ve got Anarres Infoshop and the select house show venues that will host an all ages show every once in awhile, but with the wealth of youth seeking to engage in the city’s music community the present options just aren’t enough. That’s why Friends of Noise, a group of music community members with all sorts of knowledge and experience in the music game, are acting to change that.

The group was built by a collection of non-profits and leaders in the music community, including participation from the likes of Music in the Schools, PDX Pop Now!, XRAY.FM, KBOO and My Voice Music to name a few, with growing support. Members are collaborating all efforts in attempts to maintain Portland’s ecclectic and special artistic community through finding opportunities to integrate youth into producing, performing and being able to safely gather at music and art spaces and events.

In the quest to create a permanent space, Friends of Noise will be hosting four satellite shows held in each sector of the city. The first one, on Sunday, May 22nd at Los Prados Event Hall in St. Johns, is a hip hop show with some of Portland’s finest underlying acts. Gem Dynasty, Drex Porter, Neo G Yo and the Doo Doo Funk All Stars will all be playing the kick off event. Tickets are $5 for youths (or $8 for two young’ns) and $10 for adults, with music beginning at 6:30pm.

Friends of Noise recognizes the kids in this town are the only hope we have of keeping our creativity alive and by trying their best to make sure arts and music can thrive despite the changing atmosphere in Portland, we just may have hope.

Ahleuchatistas Black Spirituals IMA and Tonal Masher Play Starline Social Club – 5/26

Posted on:

We´re intensely excited about the upcoming line up at Oakland´s Starline Social Club on May 26th. If you´re a music listener who is always on the look out for a unique live music experience, this show is the event to catch:

Oakalnd´s BLACK SPIRITUALS is a collaboration between two soloists who have found a new platform for the intersection of tone-generating electronic technology and the heart-thumping technology of acoustic percussion. This duet features a new tradition in conversant, duo vernacular dynamics that sparked a revolution in our conceptions of space, stage, ritual, performance, geography, praxis, brotherhood, relationships, rockin’ out and more. AHLEUCHATISTAS (Asheville NC) is guitarist Shane Parish and drummer Ryan Oslance on a musical odyssey of pure imagination, limitless in influences, combining tight-knit composition with improvisation, and delivering powerful live shows. The project was founded in 2002 and has evolved organically as the muse leads through the creative sonic continuum…

IMA [ii-ma] ไปŠ. ็žฌ้–“: the electro-percussion duo of Amma Ateria and Nava Dunkelman explores distortions of time and handling of the ever present moment through restraint and release. Their array of metallic nature march forth with space expanding densities to brinks of breakage, situated to be caressed by the beautification of spaces in between. IMA have performed and collaborated with avant garde pioneers such as John Zorn, Fred Frith, Ikue Mori, and many others. TONAL MASHER is the solo electroacoustic project of Aram Shelton. By removing the mouthpiece and reed, Shelton explores a different aspect of a 1937 Conn alto saxophone. Starting with feedback generated via saxophone, microphone and amplifier, Shelton uses nontraditional fingerings to coax an instrument specific set of tones from the vintage horn. The resultant music features patient polyphony from a generally monophonic instrument, and highlights the percussive aspects of the saxophone via key clicks and pad thumps.

LAURA COLE – YOU ALWAYS HURT THE ONES YOU LOVE

Posted on:

Laura Cole…the sultry voice from Ancaster, Ontario has released a brand new track titled "You Always Hurt The Ones You Love". It is based off a poem with the same title written by Amy Winehouse and featured in the documentary "Amy". This poem hit home with Laura and her band so she took it upon herself to add a second verse and bridge to complete this wonderful tune. Laura debuted this song and video last Friday at Mill’s Hardware in Hamilton. All the proceeds from the show went to the Amy Winehouse Foundation. You can learn more at www.amywinehousefoundation.org. Enjoy the video! – Kris Gies

New Track: “Decade of Nothing” – Blood Sound

Posted on:

“Decade of Nothing,” the new single from the trio of Blood Sound, hits a solemn yet pleasant tone befitting the current aesthetic outdoors. The insistent movement created by synth, percussion and bass is enhanced by the grimness of the track’s vocals. The song will be available for purchase/download this Friday, May 20, and will be featured on the group’s forthcoming EP that is due out later this year. Catch Blood Sound with Gwenno tonight at Boot & Saddle.
