Wave Action will ride their way into your hearts

Posted on:

With no shortage of bands that fall under the surf or garage rock veil to give your attention to, sifting through what’s worthy of your time can be exhaustively consuming. Bands that find ways to stand out from the bunch might be few and far between, but noobies Wave Action are already carving out their niche quickly and specifically.

Though they formed just early last year, Wave Action already have a considerable amount of moves under their belt, from their numerous near packed shows with local acts of varied genres, to their well received debut album and an upcoming tour in support of it to boot.

Pulling elements from post-punk, psych and indie to build their own special recipe for the new archetype of the styles, Wave Action both as people and as a band are hard not to fall for.

Their tour kickoff show is this Friday (the same day as our next Deli Portland Presents showcase!) at the Clinton St. Theater. So for $8, it’d be worth wishing them a safe trip after our showcase is done. We’ll miss them.

PREMIERE: Korgy & Bass – “Bernieman 2016”

Just because the Oregon Primaries have passed doesn’t mean political fever has in any way tempered down. Bernie Sanders won the hearts of Oregonians and many aware voters across the United States alike, and in celebration of his desired socially justified campaign, Korgy & Bass are releasing a new song and video in his name.

Today we bring you "Bernieman 2016," a delightful trip hop ditty with an equally tripped out video. Pulling audio samples from some of Bernie’s most beloved, exciteable speeches, "Bernieman 2016" pumps you up for the presidential hopeful in a way unlike any other political involvement tactic, using lo-fied beats and swirls of colors to stimulate the conscious mind.

Their new sh*t is dropping on Cavity Search Records, with a release show happening at the Alberta St. Pub on June 22nd with Catherine Feeny and Chris Johnedis so check it out.

Start your morning out with Korgy & Bass’ chill sounds below and remember to stay woke.

Cross Over Into an Alternative Universe w/Vanillalord at Everybody Hits May 25

Posted on:

Vanillalord have something to celebrate this evening at Everybody Hits with the release of their new record Macro Plaque PAC. It’s their first via Boiled Records, and the band crosses over into an alternative universe, as keys, bass, and percussion dictates a playfully intense, search-party sound. Commanding baritone vocals reign from the front as tightly spun post-punk wheels drive ahead, cruising with purpose. That focus captures glances of newly exposed alien lifeforms that inhabit the area, while danger potentially lies around any corner; discovery is at the controls. Tonight, the firing-on-all-cylinders sound of Sheer Mag, whose infectious, garage-hardened grit merges slick guitar licks, a relentless backend thrust, and vocals that tear right through the center, will be joining them. Meanwhile, Mike Polizze (of Purling Hiss) will lock you into a fuzzed-out, psych-pop spectrum, punctuated by flexing guitar muscle. With a smacking immediacy, Memphis punks Ex-Cult complete this lineup. Everybody Hits, 529 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $10, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Eff Yoo drops new video “God Hates Me”

Posted on:

Sometimes you want some straight New York raps on some straight New York beats. You could head down to Times Square and try your luck with the rabble of CD-R hawkers or you could check out Eff Yoo. His Sophomore album The Eff Word explores his battered psyche over a smattering of classic hard-hitting boom bap. In the video for the most recent single, “God Hates Me,” Eff portrays a Priest seeking to reconnect with his faith. His first lines lay it all out, “I’m an abortion survivor. C-Section saved me, Section 8 raised me; Food stamps daily.” He captures the struggle with a gritty tangibility that you’ll be scraping off your skin days after listening. – BrokeMc

New Track: “The Shuffle” – Old Maybe

Posted on:

Experimental, lo-fi outfit Old Maybe premiered a new single, titled "The Shuffle," over at The Le Sigh yesterday. It is off the trio’s forthcoming album, Oblio, which will be available via Apollonia Sound on May 27, and the band is celebrating its arrival the following evening at Space 1026 with Cloud Becomes Your Hand, Hermit Thrushes, and Jepeto Solutions. Below is a bit of insight shared by the group regarding its latest track.

"’The Shuffle’ is a reflection on my experience in the Philadelphia DIY music scene. I wrote it as a response to unfair perceptions and judgements, battling with depression and an eating disorder after falling in love with a narcissist, and struggling for acceptance in spaces led by white, small-bodied, wealthy and privileged ‘musicians’ and ‘artists.’ It’s about heartbreak and remembering the beautiful parts of abusive relationships. It’s about being routinely ignored, tokenized, and used by men. ‘The Shuffle’ is a dance."

Paris Radio releases new single “Tangled Shadow”, plays The Satellite on 6.14

Posted on:

Paris Radio is the new project of Tony Aguiar, a former member of Voxhaul Broadcast who’s found inspration in eighties synth pop. His new track, "Tangled Shadow", incorporates vigorous dance beats with bulked-up synth sounds that could easily be confused as analogue instruments. The track is immadiate and accesible, the kind that will get audiences to nod their heads with carefree abandon.

Aguiar will be co-headlining a show at The Satellite on June 14 with Adult Bodies.

Come hang with Strange Wool and Daisy Deaths this Thursday!

Posted on:

Thursdays are a lot like Fridays now, when it comes to having a grip of cool things happening around town. This Thursday, New York’s the Numerators are touring through town and they’ve got two Portland delights bringing the local flavor to the show.

Both Strange Wool and Daisy Deaths have been coming up hot in the local scene and as former Deli Portland poll participants, we enjoy everything they both do.

We’re excited to learn that Daisy Deaths is working on a heavier sounding follow up to their awesome Black and White EP, which will feature a whole new talented lineup.

Strange Wool have also seen some adjustments in lineup, but that hasn’t stopped them from playing a grip of shows around town and just being overall chill dudes.

The show is coming up this Thursday at the Know, so come out and enjoy some live tunes to ease you into the weekend.

Buzz Alert: Brooklyn’s B Boys (back from tour with Parquet Courts) play Alphaville on 5.27

Posted on:

New York’s B Boys will not be breakdancing when you see them live – as their name might suggest. Instead, they will be bobbing their heads to their frenzied, punk inspired songs that bears resemblance to early Devo and the slacking post punk of their buddies Parquet Courts. The track “Get A Grip” off their latest EP, No Worry No Mind (out on Captured Tracks), demonstrates the feverish nature of the trio’s music, and is complete with gang vocals and vibrant guitar lines referencing the ’80s. It’s dense, fast and anxiety inducing music, also because of the sudden introduction of odd tempos in the song’s chorus, without mentioning lyrics like “Oh no, I can’t get a grip!” sung with the urgency of mad men. The trio just finished playing a string of shows with Parquet Courts, including a sold out one at Webster Hall on May 20th, and will be performing next at Alphaville on May 27th. Honduras tours the East Coast + talks about guitar pedals on Delicious Audio

Posted on:

With obvious nods to psych rock and krautrock evident in their latest EP, ‘Gathering Rust,’ to call Honduras simply a punk (or post-punk band) would be reductive. The quartet manages to combine the reckless attitude of punk, youthful abandon of garage rock, and the polished melodic tendencies of indie to forge a sound that encapsulates the past and present of NYC (and NJ too, since we growingly hear an early Feelies influence). The band placed third in our recent Best of NYC 2015 Poll for Emerging Artists, and is about to embark on a three week East Coast tour.

Check out this little Delicious Audio feature with Honduras’ lead guitarist Tyson Moore iand his favorite guitar pedal.

New RUGS Album Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

A texturally diverse, folksy, psych-pop sound characterizes Success Party, the latest release from RUGS. A melding of loose, enthusiastic, harmony-flavored tones juxtaposed by moments of minor, somewhat chaotic-disjointed noise creates a perplexing marriage. You’ll want to spin this through a few times.

CUBE Prepares to Release New Album

Posted on:

CUBE is an experimental electronic music project from Adam Keith of Oakland, California. We´re exctied for his upcoming album My Cube which is due out on June 24th via Left Hand Path.

Cube’s first release came back in 2010, a self-released tape called Cubicle Rites. Since then, Keith has released numerous cassette tapes through his own imprint; through Human Conduct, a Baltimore experimental label; and through Digitalis, a prolific Oklahoma label, among others. Musically, he touches on industrial, dub, techno, noise, and more, but does so with a distinctly personal, emotional touch — the spirit of a singer-songwriter lurks underneath his waves of distortion.

My Cube is Cube’s first vinyl LP, and it is a multifaceted, kaleidoscopic listen, containing a multitude of moods and atmospheres. It sounds like the West Coast’s answer to Container, and will appeal to fans of Aussie synth-punks Total Control just as much as it will to fans of Regis, Silent Servant, and their seminal Downwards record label. Side A begins with a noisy scree, giving way to "Favorite," a riotous post-punk storm of churning guitars and drum machines, and ends with the all-too-brief techno beauty of "Opaque." Flip the record over and you’ll hear the piston-like beats and searing guitar of "Bargain Water"; soon comes the heavy, dancefloor-ready "Auto / Composite Face Fetish." If industrial music is less a sound than an attitude, then My Cube sounds like a rallying cry for the modern age.
