It begins with an almost-inert drone and then…it just goes off! That’s the blistering new track by Pink Mexico, "Buzz Kill", a fiery scorcher that fires all cylinders with uncompromising guitar fuzz. The Robert Preston-led project has found a new home with Burger for their upcoming full-length fool, which promises loads of humorous self-depreciation set against genuinely confident songwriting.
Weekend Warrior, May 27 – 30
With their third full-length album NERVE (SRA Records) hot and fresh off the press, Philly post-punk trio Psychic Teens is poised to inject this city’s music scene with a nourishing dose of melodic gloom. The new LP continues in the same vein of early 80’s goth rock that put them on the radar of many prestigious publications. Down to lead singer Larry Ragone’s deep vocal timbre, the band obviously has a high opinion of the dark and brooding stylings of Bauhaus, but in a modish contemporary twist, they add the fluid textural blend of shoegaze to the instrumentation. You can catch Psychic Teens divvying out the hot rocks this Saturday at Johnny Brenda’s with Vivatape, the new wave noir band from an 80’s interpretation of a dystopian future, and Mt. Billions, who walk the line between Wooden Shjips-style psychedelic noise rock and True Widow stoner drone. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave, 8pm, $10, 21+ – Bryce Woodcock

Buzz Alert! Margaret Glaspy tours with Lucius + releases LP at Baby’s All Right on 06.16
In ‘Somebody to Anybody,’ singer/songwriter Margaret Glaspy resolves to live outside others’ expectations (‘I don’t want to be somebody to anybody, no…’), and sounds about as confident in this statement as anything she’s released to date. The song is an appropriate introduction to the Brooklyn-by-California artist. At once hard-edged and intimate, jarring and softly sweet, the girl-next-door and a growling tempest, it’s a losing task to try and tie Glaspy’s pristine talent to any predictable expectation. Faster and sunnier single "Emotion and Math" (streaming) is another example of Margaret’s ambivalence, right from its title.
Considering that she’s moved in short order from participation in fiddling competitions in California, to playing crunchy folk jams in Boston, to the New York-based set you’ll soon hear from her debut full-length ‘Emotions and Math,’ (ATO Records), it’s immediately apparent this is an artist that doesn’t settle – neither geographically nor artistically. Margaret Glaspy will be touring as Lucius’ opening act this summer, but you can catch the artist when she plays at Baby’s All Right on Sat, June 18th, and get the new record when it’s released from ATO Records (also home to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard!!!) on June 17th. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Opening for Heron Oblivion at Boot & Saddle May 27
The soothing, entrapping vocals of former Philly native Meg Baird linger, pulling you through the beautiful haze of San Francisco psych-folk outfit Heron Oblivion. The surrounding instrumentation gently stirs as the vocals waft. Then, the shapes begin to shift, and the heaviness emerges as the musical demons are let out of their confines, unleashing the fury. Tonight, Boot & Saddle hosts a sold-out show, which also features the deep entrenching psych-rock explorations of Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band. Forsyth and company bob and weave through a labyrinth of long-distance riffs and grooves, sending you into a vortex that you’ll happily survey. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8:30pm, $12 (Sold Out), 21+ – Michael Colavita
Dream-pop trio Pale Dīan celebrates release of ‘Narrow Birth’ at Swan Dive on 06.03
Austin-based dream-pop trio Pale Dian, set to release their debut album Narrow Birth on June 3rd via Manifesto Records, offers whirling melodies and glowing textures reminiscent of unforgettable dream-pop acts such as Cocteau Twins and Lush, although they often enjoy adding a peculiar touch of dissonance to their tunes. Earlier this year, the trio released “In A Day” (streaming below), the first single off their upcoming album, characterized by a uber-celestial melody and big choruses featuring wall of guitars borrowed from shoegazer. Their latest single “Pas De Deux” (also streaming) strips down their sound leaving behind the fuzz of their previous single, and creating an equally mesmerizing atmosphere that allows lead singer Ruth Ellen Smith’s echoey vocals to exert their haunting magnetism. After playing a record release show for Narrow Birth at Swan Dive on June 3rd, the band will be on tour through the end of July with Ringo Deathstar and Stargazer Lillies on select dates. – John Honan
NYC melodic rockers Ula Ruth release ‘Fever’ EP
The marching bass guitar and drum pattern driving Ula Ruth’s lead track “Misery” from their latest EP “Fever” shares a bond with The Pretenders’ “Mystery Achievement,” reaching that delicate balance between media friendly sound quality and the edginess found in the best rock songs. A big defined hooky chorus reveals an existential dread with the lyrics “Misery you always follow me. Every open door I see your face.” After spending the better part of a year working on their latest effort at Tarquin Studios (Interpol, The National, Local Natives), the band emerged today with their third EP ‘Fever‘, which was released on May 24th through a performance at Rough Trade. Combining new song ideas with savvy recording studio personnel facilitated their evolution from punk rock’s rawness to a more widely accessible sound. Stand by for upcoming shows. – Dave Cromwell
Drop what you’re doing and listen to these demos from Teddy & the Rough Riders
Way back in the mids of April, I saw a previously unknown band set the stage for Natural Child at a VFW Post in town, of all places. "These guys are great!" I said. "I sure hope there’s some music online so I can share it with folks!" There wasn’t. So imagine my excitement finding out today that at some point in the interim, Teddy & the Rough Riders got some demos together and oh boy, do they ever hold up in comparison to the live experience. There are only six tracks on display, but they all showcase what this band does best—sophisticated country tunes held tight by an accomplished band and lifted into orbit by some truly incredible pedal steel (the ever-magnificent Luke Schneider), let loose to wander by way of the frayed, croaking vocals on top of it all. It only took one live show to convince me that these guys are headed in exactly the right direction. Give ’em that same chance next time you can, yeah? –Austin Phy
Taco Dreams delivers on new wave punk irreverence with “John Cougar Watermelon Camp Counselor”
John Cougar Watermelon Camp Counselor, the tape-ready debut from Taco Dreams, is relentlessly energetic throughout without being exhausting. There are notes of The Smiths, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Stone Roses, only with a great deal mopre levity than any of those new wave forebears. It’s not a brand new sound per se, but between Taco Dreams and several other new-on-the-scene groups, it’s incredibly exciting to see the Nuggetsy-garage vibe that overtook East Nasty for the longest effetively exploring some other sounds. –Austin Phy
New Weller EP Available for Streaming & Download
Produced by Jake Ewald (Modern Baseball/Slaughter Beach, Dog) and released via Honest Face Records, Career Fair, the new EP from the trio of Weller, bottles a transferable upbeat vibe, while simultaneously hitting on a reeled-in personal level. That balance of unfiltered honesty with an infectious opening up of musicality catches your ears and won’t let go.
Garage Pop band The Rizzos releases “Mom Prom” + plays The Gutter on 06.09
If you belong to that layer of humanity that has been forever compromised by a prom night gone awry, look no further than Brooklyn-based band, The Rizzos. Their new single "Prom Mom" shows a self-assured band with garage rock/doo wop inclinations that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Better produced than their rougher, punkier previous release, the song is a lament about missing senior prom, having instead to spend the night at home – getting drunk with mom… The plodding verses tackle common teenage girl fantasies (it’s all about boys!), in a crescendo of frustration and volume that highlights the confident and cool vocals of lead singer/guitarist Meg (Rizzo?). The band is leaving for a short East Coast tour and will be back in Brooklyn with a live show at the Gutter on June 9th. – Madeleine Grossman
