New Youth Debuts with Perfect Spring Romance Single “Soft Eyes”

Posted on:

Looks like there’s a new voice on the Austin synthpop scene, and boy is it a dreamy one. Solo artist New Youth, also known as Silas Acosta, has released his first single "Soft Eyes" this month, and it is a beautiful bit of lazy-day summer pop. Acosta is obviously a big fan of 80s pop, especially of the British synths and jangle guitars variety, and he layers airy elements of that lovely era on one another and over his breathy voice in the track in a way that speaks perfectly to the easy, carefree romance that the song’s title calls to mind.

It’s a song that will immediately appeal to the fan of 80s indie pop, as it will to anyone with a taste for the dreamy, and it’s a very nice debut for this young artist. We’re looking forward to seeing what else New Youth will bring to the table, hopefully soon, but until then, get a listen below to the song that well might be the soundtrack for a whole lot of Austin spring lovers this year.

Negative Gemini lights up the stage at Good Room on 05.04

Posted on:

If you close your eyes while listening to Negative Gemini you’ll feel like you’re floating in some technicolor daydream. The brainchild of Queen’s producer Lindsey French, has been bubbling around for a few years now but has really peaked with her recent releases. Often wielding her vocals as instruments, French delivers tunes that are dancey and emotional at once, and tightly (self-)produced. Native Gemini is set to release a new album, ‘Body Work,’ sometime this year via 100% Electronica (this will ring a bell if you’ve heard George Clanton’s work) and, if her preview singles are any indication, it’s going to be a treat. Can’t wait? Then catch Negative Gemini tomorrow, May 4, at the Good Room in Greenpoint. Who knows, maybe she’ll play some of her new stuff. But until then, “Body Work” (streaming below) and “You Never Knew” will have to do. – Adriana S Ballester

New Track: “Joymance” (Feat. Zeroni) – Ryshon Jones

Posted on:

Philly emcee Ryshon Jones shares that his forthcoming album You’re Safe Now is influenced by “the feeling of allowing yourself to get lost to get in touch with your inner world, and learning the cycle of the ups and downs most of us face but never tell anyone.” He’s had a lot of time to contemplate it over the two years that he’s been working on the record. Take a listen below to his latest single from the album, called "Joymance," featuring D.C. songbird Zeroni.

May 13, the release date for Tired of Tomorrow (Relapse Records) is rapidly approaching. And while we wait for it to drop, Nothing has issued another single, “The Dead Are Dumb,” which you may recognized from the second episode of Nothing’s documentary. The song stews in a reserved, reflective, somber state, slowly sinking into the senses. The band’s hometown record release show will be held at Union Transfer on Friday, July 8 with additional support from Citizen and Culture Abuse, as well as Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler.

Covey plays Great Scott 5.10

There’s a peaceful tide that will wash over you when listening to Boston’s Covey. Each track is suffused with a comforting warmth that’s echoed in the gentle guitar chords and Tom Freemans’ textured croons, a sense of familiarity permeates the simple melodies. Though they have only released two singles since 2013, Covey has already a clearly developed sound for themselves that has left us anxious for more. Keep tabs on their Facebook page for any news on new music and join Covey at Great Scott on May 10.

Canadian Music Weeks gets goin tonight right here in Toronto. Here are some bands you should keep on your radar!

Bike Thiefs – Monday May 2 @ Bovine Sex Club

3 piece alt-punk group out of Mississauga. Their name may be grammatically incorrect but if the Maple Leafs can do it then why not Bike Thiefs too.

The Naked Wild – Tuesday May 3 @ Bovine Sex Club

Catchy pop-rock group from Toronto. Past winners of the Delis Band of the Month Poll. Formerly a 3 piece but now employ a full time drummer. Go enjoy these easy rock tunes.

Stonetrotter – Tuesday May 3 @ Cameron House

Soulful rock n roll out of Barrie. Real Canadian tunes with nice harmonies and mellow guitarmonies. Cut from the same cloth as the Sheepdogs.

Pony – Wednesday May 4 @ The Silver Dollar Room

I’ve been waitin’ to hear more from Pony. Hoping for a new record from them soon. These gals play very nice lo-fi garage pop that’ll hook you instantly.

Pet Sun – Wednesday May 4 @ Smiling Buddha AND Friday May 6 @ Lee’s Palace

One of our favorites here at the Deli. Pet Sun comes from Hamilton with top notch doom garage. They are about to take over so don’t miss either of these opportunities to see them "before it was cool"

Ol’CD – Thursday May 5 @ Handlebar

Garage/surf/psych/all around awesome friggin’ tunes. This band will make you want to party…straight up. They go on super late on Thursday so you’ll be primed and ready. Don’t even think about working on Friday.

Chastity – Friday May 6 @ Velvet Underground

Very mysterious band out of Whitby. Interesting tunes with cool arrangements and a laziness to the vocals that keeps you concentrated. Alt-rock with a progessive twist.
