Marinate in the deep psych-surf groove of previously unreleased “Howl” from Needle Points‘ performance on April 29, 2016 at Bourbon & Branch. The band’s debut full-length is slated for a summer release. This raunchy space-boogie ditty suggests that the Scott McMicken-produced record should be one that’s on your radar.
Noteworthy bill of locals at Shea on 05/07: Parlor Tricks, Starlight Girls, Not Blood Paint, and A Deer A Horse
Nobody in the music scene likes to be called a "veteran" – it implies loss of youth, in a youth obsessed field – but it’s undeniable that bands surviving in the Big Apple for 5+ years are rare and should be honored with a title… what about "Pillars of the NYC Scene"? There will be four of them performing at Shea Stadium this Saturday May 7th: Parlor Tricks, Starlight Girls, Not Blood Paint, and A Deer A Horse (pictured). Check out their latest releases below.
Bellwire charms with quirky singles off upcoming album
“You got your path, oh I got mine” sings Tyler Burwood in Boston’s quartet Bellwire’s new single “Time Out.” The song, a jangly reflection speckled with vibrant guitar chords, bubbling drums, and monotone vocals, is a single off their upcoming album Dog Thoughts, which is set to be released on May 24. The album, if the singles are any indication, ranges from mellow, borderline melancholic ruminations evident in “JAKL” to spastic bouts in “Let It Shine,” (streaming below) another single with energetic guitars sputtering exuberantly into a solo where the chords stretch out and slacken the pace before dying out into feedback. A quirky aural exploration of age and relationships, Dog Thoughts seems to be shaping up to an entertaining listen. Keep tabs on Bellwire’s Facebook page for any upcoming shows and take a listen to their single below.
Keep NYC insane! Guerilla Toss, PC Worship and Palberta play Palisades on 06.04
We believe the health of a musical scene can be measured by the amount of bands that are completely out of their mind, and also by the amount of music fans interested in attending their shows. In this regard, there’s a quality gig at Palisades in about a month (Saturday June 4th) that shines a bright, although rather psychotic, light on NYC, involving two local bands that sound nothing short of irrational (Palberta – pictured – and Guerilla Toss) and one coming across as "seriously disturbed" (PC Worship). Taking inspiration from subversive movements like No Wave and early Post Punk, without sounding simply amateurish (that’s the hard part!), these groups represent NYC’s current sound of "uncompromise" – and the sparkle that keeps the Rock’n’Roll flame alive in this problematic and increasingly art-hostile city.
New Music Video: “Wedding Singer” – Modern Baseball
Below is a new music video for Modern Baseball‘s track "Wedding Singer," which is the latest single from the group’s forthcoming album Holy Ghost. In it, the lovable quartet is the house band inside the brain of the video’s protagonist, who is having a shitty day until he hooks up with pink-wigged cutie driving a hearse. Things get a little Twilight Zone-y, but the romance eventually blossoms. Holy Ghost comes out on May 13 via Run For Cover Records, and the band will be doing a special in-store performance at Long in the Tooth on Thursday, May 12.
Hood Smoke @ The Hideout
Hood Smoke is celebrating the release of their album, Rough Around the Hedges, on May 20th at The Hideout. The album was released by Ears & Eyes Records on March 25th. The album features the track "Jade Lights" which we hosted the video premiere of back in October. The album also includes their latest single, "Alluring Bedlamite", and the video for that track is below.
Lady Parts Go Deeper at KFN May 5
The trio known as Lady Parts hits the upstairs of Kung Fu Necktie this evening. The band dishes out melodic, cut-down-to-the-core rock, implementing smooth vocal harmony and combating that with moments of snarl. Lyrically-twisting, simple-on-the-surface images that entrench themselves with a deeper resonance, it’s heartfelt, attitude-smeared rock that you’ll subconsciously replay throughout the day. The twang-infused, alt-country tunes of Betty Iron Thumbs and the jolting noise-punk of Kevin help to complete this billing, which also includes the debut performance of local three-piece Cool Eagle. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $6, 21+ – Michael Colavita
Beauty School
Beauty School released a new single, "Pushover" b/w "Teenage Dominoes", this week. Both tracks are lo-fi, garage-pop gems centered around strong female vocals and harmonies.
Half Waif celebrate release of “Probable Depths” LP at Baby’s All Right on 05.12
Combining pop sensibilities with the classical textures of violins and twinkling pianos, Brooklyn’s beguiling trio, Half Waif, sends un on a dazzling journey in her album Probable Depths – which we had the chance to preview, or rather, pre-hear. With swelling vocals, billowing synths, and blinking electronic melodies that lull us into a dream, the album is both achingly private and daringly open, as if each song was a stolen glance into Plunkett’s sonic world, each painting an acutely fine and deliberate stroke of her emotive life. A mellifluous pirouette of musical resplendence, Half Waif’s Probable Depths is an aural triumph set to be released on May 6. Catch Half Waif at Baby’s All Right on May 12 for their album release show and tour kick-off. – Adriana S Ballester, photo by Adan Carlo.
Twin Peaks “Holding Roses”
Twin Peaks have released a third single, "Holding Roses", from their forthcoming album, Down In Heaven. The album will be released on May 13th via Grand Jury & Communion.
Twin Peaks are performing a sold out release show at Lincoln Hall on May 13th with The Funs and White Reaper.
New Music Video: “Arrest” – Curtis Cooper
Watch the new video for “Arrest,” found on Curtis Cooper‘s debut album Laughing in Line. The footage captivates with its haunting sense of entrapment. Dylan Pecora captures the face-warping, eye-popping intensity as Cooper conducts the songs movements while those basement walls seem to hold him in. He’s also set to perform at Bourbon & Branch on Friday, May 13, as part of Queen of Jeans residency, which also includes Ceramic Animal’s record release.
EFG bring their psych rock to The Echo on 5.5
Psychedelic rockers EFG boldly embrace a heavily-textured array of driving, over-amped guitars that brings back a certain bravado to the genre. It serves to mention that all of its members are veterans in this kind of setting, as Imaad Wasif (lowercase, Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Josh Garza (Secret Machines) and Tom Biller (Liars, Warpaint) all have a steady track record within the modern noise/experimental persuasion. Their most recent single, Outlier”, seamlessly merges reverbed guitars and pounding drums with a strong sense of pop melody that falls somewhere between classic Detroit rock and cosmic krautrock.
The band is opening for Swedish psych-rock institution Dungen at the Echo tomorrow, May 5th. The “Outlier" 7’’ is currently available for purchase via bodankuma.com. – Juan Rodríguez
