Animal Eyes are back with ‘Where We Go’

Posted on:

Animals Eyes have made a glorious musical return with their first album since 2013’s Ursus. With Where We Go, the band has reached one of their highest points musically as its songs pack a heavy emotional punch, supported by an elevated production. They’ve really come into their own with this one, which is why their album/vinyl release show at Mississippi Studios tomorrow is more than worth attending.

Their live set is captivating, and with Fauna Shade and Sama Dams, there will be much to enjoy. Tickets are $5 and music starts at 9pm so show up on time! Below is the first track to come off Where We Go, titled "Mushroom Hunter."

TOPE Releases New Video – Better Place

Posted on:

It’s been almost a year since rising Portland artist TOPE packed up his bags, dropped the single Miss Me When I’m Gone, and moved to Oakland to pursue music full time.

TOPE has released the visual for the Stewart Villain produced single, Better Place. Directed by Evan Croker and filmed in some of San Francisco’s most iconic locations: Dolores Park, Clarion Alley, Grace Cathedral, and the Golden Gate Bridge – visually, Better Place might be TOPE’s most striking video to date. Lyrically, TOPE picks up where he left off on MMWIG. He gives us the details on his move to the Bay, personal life, budding music career and much more over a classic Lauryn Hill sample freaked by one of the NW’s top producers.

A Deli NYC premiere: Lake Ruth’s ‘The Only One Who Knows’

Posted on:

We can’t exactly tell what Lake Ruth‘s singer Allison Brice sings about in the band’s new single ‘The Only One Who Knows’ we are premiering below – the lyrics are rather unintelligible. Nonetheless, her vocals carry a quality of wisdom and sweet confidence that makes us picture a young mother – our Platonic mother? – giving us precious advice, with her beautiful, hopeful voice, about that relentless unraveling of mysteries called life. And even though the band’s music, heavily influenced by the psychedelic ’60s, puts this semi-imaginary lady in a historical context our real mother missed, the track’s ‘vintage’ sound and dreamy atmosphere contribute in setting the stage for the most reassuring of dreams: re-living the days when we had somebody on our side who could answer all our questions: ‘The Only One Who Knows’.

Don’t miss Lake Ruth at NYC Popfest on May 22nd at Littlefield. LP Actual Entity’ out on June 24th, 2016 on The Great Pop Supplement.

Gigawatts mag going out with a bang (and many bands) @ Alphaville on May 14/15

Posted on:

1.21 Gigawatts – a Brooklyn DIY magazine that did a great job of covering the scene’s punky, garagey and psych emerging bands – is sadly closing and it will be gracing us one final time with their hosting skills come this weekend at Alphaville. With Deli favorites like Dead Stars, HaybabyDances, and 11 more taking the stage we can expect a weekend of great music and spectacular shows. On top of getting 14 amazing bands performing in two days, it’s all just $10. Insane, right? It is always with a heavy heart that we must say goodbye, but Gigawatts really knows how to go out with a bang (and how to give you more bang for your buck). So head on over to Alphaville this Saturday and Sunday for some memorable performances. Check out the playlist below to get a feeling of what you’ll be listening. – Adriana Ballester

Palm Offering Sonic Refuge Tonight at Goldy’s

Posted on:

Gray skies continue to blanket the area, however, this evening’s show at Goldy’s offers a sonic refuge. With a four-pronged experimental psych-rocking arsenal, Palm drifts into the unknown, off the traditional path. The purposefully abrupt deviations develop a sense of anticipatory tension, pushing each song forward to an undisclosed location. Guitars twist in a murky dissonance as the juxtaposing vocals, a ghostly calm, penetrates the periphery. The smattering of backend, meanwhile, provides a steadying hand. Tonight, Palm will joined by the disenchanted daydream of Old Maybe and the introspective experimentation of Microsoft Saint. The innovative exploits of Atlanta’s Hellier Ulysses cap this imaginative evening.  – Goldy’s, 723 Chestnut St. – 3FL, $7, 8pm, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Go retro with Savants at Alphaville on 5.12

Posted on:

Sometimes that ‘play’ button is nothing short than a time machine, and as far as Brooklyn four piece Savants are concerned, one that invariably takes you back to the late ’60s. With a heavier focus on organ riffs and keys as opposed to the guitar-centric psych rock that’s surfaced recently, it’s not difficult to draw comparisons to classic psych bands like The Doors. No song is clearer proof of this than “Death Rattle & Roll” (streaming below), which opens with pithy ‘legato’ Hammond chords a la’ Ray Manzarek and is followed closely by echoing electric guitars. The vocals, which sound washed out and muted, interlace between all the instruments with an appropriate lo-fi, bluesy feel. You can catch Savants live at Alphaville on May 12, or at Baby’s All Right on May 26th.

Mattress is back with a new track, “Fuck the Future”

Posted on:

Mattress‘ low, loungey tones have been a favorite around town since he started a few years ago. Mixing the Vegas appeal of Tom Jones in a nightclub with the sensually deep vocality of Nick Cave and a bit of Jamie Stewart’s eccentricity, Rex Marshall has filled a niche we didn’t even know was empty.

Yesterday, he released a new, somewhat nihilistic track called "Fuck the Future." It’s sentimentally exactly how it sounds – a catchy diddy that’s more about living in the moment than worry about all the crap that’s coming later.

His track release show is tomorrow at the Liquor Store with Roselit Bone and Jenny Don’t & the Spurs (who are also releasing a split that night!), and his new album (recorded in Isaac Brock’s studio) is due out this summer on Brock’s label, Glacial Pace Recordings

Listen to the track below and be sure to get to the Liquor Store on time since Mattress opens up the night’s bill.

NYC rapper ELUCID releases political LP ‘Save Yourself’

Posted on:

“You want it all, but it can’t save you,” explains Brooklyn rapper Elucid regarding the title of his new release ‘Save Yourself.’ A prominent member of the eminent Backwoodz Studioz label, Elucid’s polemic vocals complement his Sonic Youth cum Trent Reznor noise collage beats. The album is transformative. It’s a meditation on life, inequality, love, and racial disparity. As more and more of our heroes disappear and disappoint, his advice is well heeded. – BrokeMC
