Richmond noise punk Cherry Pits rocked out at Strange Matter, 5/29

Posted on:

Shredding at insane speeds from the outset, Cherry Pits is the Richmond punk band you need to see live and don’t want to mess with. Their stage presence is electric and defiant, blasting out all that’s good about their noise punk flavor and keeping their Sunday night show at Strange Matter going full speed ahead even after a forced guitar switch. Each member of this fearsome foursome performed his piece flawlessly, effusing contagious energy and displaying a mastery of what it means to play in a punk band. Smooth, yet raw, Cherry Pits takes names until there aren’t any left. Give these powerpop-influenced punks your ears and catch a show when you can. -Jonathan Goodwin

BANDICOOTS – EP RELEASE PARTY FRIDAY!

Posted on:

The Bandicoots are a talented young group comin’ out of Hamilton. They started playing together in high school (which wasn’t too long ago for them) and have carried their high school parties into the local bars and venues today. They have just released a new EP titled "Quarters At The Penny Arcade". This 4 track set is available on CD or iTunes. They made a video for the tune "Overnight Innovator" which has some serious Brit Rock influence goin’ on. If you’re into Kasabian or Arctic Monkeys then you’ll dig this track and probably most of their tunes. The Bandicoots will be doing an EP Release Party this Friday June 3rd at This Ain’t Hollywood in Hamilton. Jaunt and the White Crowleys are also on the bill. – Kris Gies

DANIEL ROMANO – “MOSEY” REVIEW

Posted on:

Country traditionalist Daniel Romano has been goin non stop over the past year or so. Last year he released "If I’ve Only One Time Askin" which built off his previous country releases but found a more unique and original sound. Last week he released his latest album "Mosey" which brings his music into a whole new realm of originality and creativity. It could be borderline genius. Romano keeps his country roots but embarks in a new sonic direction. Some tracks such as the opener "Valerie Leon" use horns to bring spanish vibes to the forefront. There’s also a lot more keys on this album which at some points sounds like it could be used as a movie score from a 70s action movie. What I like most about this record is what drew me into Romano’s music to begin with….the stories….the sad ones in particular. My personal picks would be "I’m Alone Now" and "(Gone Is) All But A Quarry Of Stone". If you actually like new and original music then you gotta listen to "Mosey" by Daniel Romano. – Kris Gies

Kansas Bible Company preps new album release with “She’s in the Garden,” live this Friday (06.03)

Posted on:

It’s just a taste, just a tease, but the dreamy "She’s in the Garden" from Kansas Bible Company’s upcoming Paper Moon shows that the band is drinking deep from a pool of laudable influences. Centered around the reliable tenderness of a Rhodes and leading into a horn breakout bound for who-knows-where, "She’s in the Garden" sounds something like Jason Molina with a smile on his face.

The Bible Co. has a hometown show at the Beast coinciding with the release of the album on June 3, this Friday, so check out the track and then be sure to show these talented locals some love in-person style. –Austin Phy

Catch Boston synth-poppers Condor at The Plough and Stars on 6/2

Posted on:

With an online presence of only three songs from 2014 to its name, Condor has so far favored quality over quantity. Originating from defunct Mystery Roar, the talented Boston-based synth-pop duo is sitting on nine track album, as they hinted back in 2014, when the trio of singles were originally released. Each song features similar components, with enough variations from track to track to provide the perfect mix of consistency and contrast.  On each song clean acoustic and electronic melodies are orbited by distorted synth textures, while a standard snare pattern keeps the song on track. Hovering above the instrumenation are the singer’s airy vocals, providing a soothing respite for the groovy tempest occuring below. Condor, quite frankly, need to release new music online, as the entertainment brought by the quality of the songs can only be matched by the frustration brought by their lacking quantity.  You can check out Condor at The Plough and Stars on 6/2. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber, Photo Credit: Andrea Morales

Shira readies release of ‘Subtle Creature LP + plays Cake Shop on 6/6

Posted on:

It’s always excellent to see a Renaissance person sucessfully blend their disciplines together, and the music of Brooklyn artist SHIRA is a perfect example. A poet, visual artist and musician, SHIRA mixes genres like soul, folk and electronic pop with a painter’s touch, allowing for bold creations while not losing any of the character of the individual components. Her poet’s side makes its way into the music as well, as she injects each track with richly contemplative and abstract lyrics.

Shira has managed to sucessfully evolve her sound on each project, and her next LP, Subtle Creature, should be no exception. On single "Honey in My Pot," featuring Portland band Joseph, she seems to move her sound out of the sky and instead opts for an earthier approach with a notably more prominent rhythm section. It remains to be seen whether this move will be one that’s consistent across the full length of the album, but there will certainly be no complaints from us if this ends up being the case.  You can presumably catch SHIRA’s two singles off of the new album, and hopefully more, at Cake Shop on 6/6. – Henry Solotaroff Webber

Prison Escapee shares new single “Gunslinger”, debut LP out 6/16

Posted on:

"Gunslinger" is a pensive meditation that ruminates on taking love with you to a new place. Blanketed with a soft layer of minimal synths, lo-fi bedroom recorder Erik David Hidde, who goes by Prison Escapee, sings with a calm demeanor, with a slightly indistinct delivery that only adds to the song’s shimmering dreamscape. There’s a certain uncertainty lingering through his mind, though he’s more so eager and expectant of what is to come.

This is the second reveal off of Prison Escapee’s forthcoming album Disappearing Mountaintop, which will be self-released on June 16. Take a listen to "Gunslinger" below.

Stone Cold Fox plays Rough Trade on 07.15 + talks about pedals on Delicious Audio

Posted on:

Melodic and atmospheric, Brooklyn’s Cold Stone Fox boasts a sound that’s multifaceted but extremely balanced. Their latest EP ‘Tunnel Vision’ harmoniously blends psychedelia with some of that melodic, ethereal but somewhat dark rock of the ’80s (we hear a little bit of Simple Minds and The Church). The band is scheduled to perform at Rough Trade on July 15.

Check out this Delicious Audio feature about Stone Cold Fox’s guitar pedals.

GUN help keep PDX punk alive

Posted on:

Remember back in the good ol’ days when punk wasn’t all about how you dressed, but almost all about how you played and the raw appeal of your music? Keeping in that faith, GUN are maintaining that magic with their sheer, unapologetic hardcore punk, performed through a partly performance art veil.

Their self titled demo blasts into your ear drums with a sharp force and includes some deep cuts from the Kingsmen and Rudimentary Peni, but it’s their stage presence that will really draw you in. In a somewhat Delocated fashion, GUN evoke feelings of spirited mayhem with loud bursts and shouts of aural chaos.

Become a part of the GUN movement and start your June off with them, along with the Sweatpants, URCHIN and On Drugs, at the Dacha tomorrow night. They’ll be leaving for a West Coast tour the beginning of July, so get your fill of them live while you can. It’s a sight to be seen.

Radclyffe Hall celebrates the release of their upcoming album at Great Scott on 6.07

Posted on:

Radclyffe Hall’s is set to release their debut album G H O S T S on June 7th via Cleopatra Records. The electronic Boston-based band embraces the darker and more gothic side of synth-pop music. The eerie single “OMG” (streaming below) off their upcoming album is densely layered with flowing synths and smooth vocals from frontwoman and keyboardist Dhy Berry. The track is about a friend of Berry who passed away suddenly from an illness. Her introspective lyrics turn loss and grief into cathartic pop anthems that have enough groove to make them danceable. Radclyffe Hall will be celebrating the release of their album on June 7th at Great Scott where they will be playing in support of Day Wave. – John Honan
