Susan release “I’ve Been Known”, debut full-length due out on 4.29

Posted on:

Garage pop outfit Susan have been steadily releasing a string of brisk, guitar-driven anthems that amp up the scuzz. There was certainly an effective aesthetic in play, though it didn’t really let us into what Susan really wanted to tell us. It turns out the trio had been holding onto their most significant statement yet with "I’ve Been Known", a hooky, instantly-hummable number that fully lets its guard down and teaches us that there’s no shame in doubting things while you’re in a state of flux.

"I’ve Been Known" is the first single off of Susan’s debut full-length Never Enough, which comes out on April 29 via Volar Records.

Brooklyn artist on the rise: Fieldings

Posted on:

We mentioned Fieldings a few days ago in this blog, and we’ve been intrigued by their music since then. This is the project of a NYC based songwriter who recently moved from Sydney, Australia to Brooklyn, whose first name appears to be Lu. Her 2014 three song EP ‘Wild Release Vol I‘ brings back to mind the emotional expressionism and experimental droney inclinations of Lisa Germano’s early albums, although the tone here is more subdued and the production sparser. In it, Lu’s voice shines for confidence and tone, together with her songwriting and production skills. Follow up EP ‘Wild Release Vol II,’ released a few months later, picks up where the debut left off, with acoustic guitars blending gracefully with electronic elements, samples, and percussion sounds that are alternatively acoustic and electronic. We are curious to hear what an edgy scene like NYC will do to this already original artist, in particular now that Lu appears to have band mates. Check out our favorite single ‘Idioglossia,’ strteaming below.

New Track: “Metastatic” – Pinkwash

Posted on:

Pinkwash continue their slash-n-burn/scorched earth policy on the duo’s latest single "Metastastic." Joey Doubek feels like he’s vocally channeling PiL-era John Lydon over the blistering drum-guitar assault. Pinkwash will be releasing their new LP Collective Sigh on May 13 via Don Giovanni Records. Koncept shook up our senses in 2015 with “The Fuel” EP (co-produced by J57), aand by storming SXSW in March this year. Now we can see him bring his fire to the intimate and historic Arlene’s Grocery. As he raps in his newest single, “Crazy is Beautiful,” — “Never look back at the past me, that would bring me down so badly.” The EP is a testament to living in the present. The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Dear Forbidden

Posted on:
Admitted late bloomer, Dear Forbidden’s Gina Cardillo has definitely left behind her Lion King soundtrack past for the grungy, seedier side of 90’s alt rock. Like a large majority of us, Cardillo sounds like she has fallen in love with Philly, and we’re guessing all aspects of the city have been influencing her songwriting, which is the most difficult but rewarding process for the young artist. Take a listen to Dear Forbidden’s debut EP Glitter & Dissonance and a moment to learn a little more about our most recent Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner HERE.

Nothing, Nowhere. weaves together various genres in ‘Who Are You?’

Posted on:

In a world where the lines between genres keep blurring it’s no surprise when bands or artists create works the defy fitting into any one of them. What is refreshing, though, is when they do it well. Enter Nothing, Nowhere. With self deprecatingly analytical lyrics glazed over with a layer of anger, dreamy reverb guitars, rapping, and samplings from movies and readings Nothing, Nowhere. builds tracks that take cues from emo, indie dream pop, and hip hop. Thus forging an LP (streaming below) that explores love, frustration, religion and loss of faith with an unique style. Keep an eye out on their facebook page for any future concerts.

Has-Lo Opening for Open Mike Eagle at KFN April 14

Posted on:

Has-Lo delivers the goods with an old-school lyric-first sensibility embracing a both sides of the coin, with narratives delving deep, documenting the tireless climb upward. Hitting with a low-key bounce, the stories roll forward in a relentless sense of purpose, slickly combining phrases with a keen wit and an eye on the prize, which lies in the distance. However, all isn’t heavy; with his new EP Hard Writer, he finds an introspective manner of levity. Speaking of levity, with a freshly minted new album Hella Personal Film Festival, Open Mike Eagle headlines this late night gem, connecting the cognitive dots through personal commentary that depicts reality, with a humorous scope. DJ Bearbait, a.k.a. Chris Ward, opens the evening concocting a mix of R&B, soul, and funk, while kickstarting a bill worth waiting to the wee hours. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Mo Troper debuts “Star Wars” and it’s awesome

Posted on:

Whether you’re a fan of the Star Wars movies or not, we’ve all at one point experienced the "screw you guys, I’m going home" feeling Mo Troper‘s new track, "Star Wars" is basically centered around. This clamoring, relatable song debuted on Consequence of Sound yesterday, and speaks of a desire to stay home and just watch Star Wars as opposed to partying with a bunch of bro douchebags. Well, same.

Beloved drops at the end of the month and Troper will be kicking off a tour next month in support of it, including two release shows in Portland.

The YeahTones end Rockwood residency on 04.28

Posted on:

Residencies are a great way for venues to launch a clear message to music press and fans, the message being: "we dig this band and they have a great live show!" We’ve got to trust Rockwood then about Brooklyn’s The YeahTones, since they offered them a three date quarterly residency starting in February and ending on April 28th. From what we can tell from their only recorded track, entitled ‘What Could I Do’ and streaming below, the group masters the blues rock genre to a t, managing to instill in this old music a healthy dose of freshness, power and character, without ever losing its signature viscerality. Looking forward to hearing more.
