Saturday Night Sounds: Summer Cannibals – “Say My Name”

Posted on:

Today was a nice day. The sun was out, the temperature was pleasantly warm, and there was much anticipation to be had for all the great shows happening tonight. Why not end the day (and begin the night) on just as great a note? Summer Cannibals dropped their delightfully poppy new single, "Say My Name," just two days ago via Noisey. Frontwoman Jessica Boudreaux says the track is the most pop oriented song to come off their upcoming album, Full of It, due out late May on Kill Rock Stars. Though it sounds nothing like that fairly popular Beyonce-led song of the same name, it is an infectious tune perfect for a beautiful night like this one. Give it a listen below and check out Summer Cannibals’ slated tour dates here.

Ecstatic Vision Opening for Earthless at Underground Arts March 19

Posted on:

The entrancing power of psych-rockers Ecstatic Vision pulls listeners into a mind-warping vortex. Possessing a primal grip, the band’s gravitational pull is rooted in the inertia of its interlocking, tone-setting backend, consuming the surroundings in a tunnel of momentum. With that foundation laid, the internal, tormenting temperature is constantly on the rise. As shards of scorching guitar rip through the sonic tapestry, the vocals serve as thunderous proclamations, guiding you into unfamiliar territory. Tonight at Underground Arts, they’re paired with San Diego’s Earthless, who will be blasting off and stamping the cosmos with their personal brand of raunchy psych-rock. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $16, 21+ – Michael Colavita

(In)Body play record release show at El Cid on 3.25

Posted on:

(In) Body is a duo of newcomers with the undertandings of seasoned academics. Ryan Amador and Daniel Weidlein are taking more of a pop approach with their collaborative partnership after having followed paths of distinction: Amador won the ASCAP Robert Allen Award in 2013, while Weidlein has seen some charting success as a jazz session musician. But with this project they put forth a soulful embrace of synth-based arrangements and vocal harmonies that are emotionally charged and anything but scholarly.

Helped by lead single "Safe In Your Heart", the duo are playing a record release show at El Cid on March 25 to promote their upcoming debut EP, Becom(in)g.

Tennessee Scum teases next album with “Ruin”

Posted on:

Do you have two minutes and maybe an entire neighborhood to burn? Dig the cockroaches out of your ears and turn them toward "Ruin," the first single off an upcoming full length from Boro punk staples Tennessee Scum. Gone are the surf leanings of previous Scum releases, instead taking full advantage of a slimmer studio lineup and the addition of Wes Mitchell—former drummer of the now-defunct Megajoos, a band whose demise has inspired many 40s to be poured from my own porch in tribute—to turn the fury up as high as the knob goes.  As is tradition with Tennessee Scum tracks, this one burns out fast but leaves a mark for a long, long time.

Catch them at Charlie Bob’s on April 1, lest you yourself be the April fool for missing out. –Austin Phy

Tonight is the Planned Parenthood fundraiser at First Unitarian Church, featuring some of the most rippin’ female-fronted bands the Northeast has to offer. Screaming Females, a band who is impossible to describe without some variation of the word “shred,” is headlining the event along with Cayetana, the indie punk trio whose sincerity will mend your soul, Amanda X, the post-something power-gaze band with a flair for fuzzy melody, Dark Thoughts, who play so fast they make pacemakers combust, and Littler, who will open the night with a healthy dosage of grunge-twee feels. If you have secured a ticket to the sold-out event, you should know that the screaming deal you got on it was in order to promote inclusivity; if you want to support PP further, then there will be an area in the venue to donate those extra bills. All money raised at the event will go to Planned Parenthood Southeastern PA and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and all the rockin’ tunes and memories are yours to keep. New Track: “Jawbreaker” – Laser Background

Posted on:

Below is the latest dreamy composition from Laser Background, a.k.a. Andy Molholt,  called "Jawbreaker." It’s the first single from Molholt’s upcoming full-length album, and was co-produced with Ava Luna’s Carlos Hernandez and Julian Fader at Gravesend Recordings, which resides inside Brooklyn DIY space The Silent Barn. Andy shared, "This song is for all the people who feel helpless. This song is a shattering call to free yourself from the toxic boundaries that we create for ourselves. Life is too short! Don’t waste it." Laser Background will be welcoming the arrival of the hand-cut lathe 7" single at Johnny Brenda’s tomorrow night, along with Mock Suns, who also recently dropped a new LP Stay True, and Sun Hat.

New Music Video: “Energy Waster” – Cold Fronts

Posted on:

Jamming in the van, cruising playfully on "hoverboards," and hitting city after city with their infectious power pop, Cold Fronts‘s “Energy Waster” video by CJ Harvey captures a glimpse of it all. The footage embraces a silly, fun side of the band, while chronicling a bit of tour life. Speaking of touring, the band is currently at SXSW (their fateful location of a few years back where they were discovered by Sire Records’s Seymour Stein), before heading out on separate runs with DMA’s and later Har Mar Superstar. RIFFT crushes with “Something Other Than the Earth”

Posted on:

Something Other Than the Earth is a to-the-point package of what you really want when you’re in a doom metal mood—to hell with subtlety; just give me the heavy. It’s all here: thunderous guitars bellowing over a tundra of broken amps, intricate, twisting solos giving way to gut-churning chords, and Lovecraftian horrors explored in no particular hurry through track lengths in the double digits. Compound that with some in-your-face drums that would make Steve Albini cry (or whatever the max setting on his emotion dial looks like) and you’ve got an album with the heft and velocity to smash a whole city block. –Austin Phy

Alt folk Brooklyn quintet worth checking out: Chamber Band

Posted on:

This past October, Brooklyn “coffee rock” quintet Chamber Band released their genre-melding sophomore album, ‘Careers.’ Starting with the folk-inflected “Baker’s Boy, and featuring “Love Left” (streaming below), a rock-girded track that boldly depicts intense heartbreak with novelistic calm, the Hunger Games-influenced release (which also features covers by Tom Waits and Jakob Dylan) is both intellectual and free-thinking, controlled and wild and, consequently, is compellingly enigmatic music. Chamber Band plays at Black Bear Bar on 7/15. – Zach Weg

Providence folk artist Ian Faria plays AS220 on 3/29

Posted on:

A little over a week ago, Providence folk musician Ian Faria released his unabashedly joyous latest album, ‘Animal Songs.’ Starting with the ambling “Raccoon Song,” halved by the elegant “Cassafrass Blues,” and including “Prayer Song” (streaming below), a ukulele-jumped track that features fellow Providence eccentric Edgar Clinks, the technically masterful fifteen-song effort (which follows Faria’s ‘Covers’ album from last year) exudes real-life gravitas while jubilantly soaking in summer joy. Ian Faria plays AS220 in Providnce, Rhode Island on 3/29. – Zach Weg
