New Mary Lattimore LP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

Below is a new solo album from experimental harpist Mary Lattimore entitled At the Dam. Named after the essay written by Joan Didion about the Hoover Dam, Lattimore wrote the compositions after a road trip across the U.S. with a friend and her 47-string Lyon & Healy harp, which was funded by the fellowship that she had been awarded by the Pew Center. The tranquil five-song LP is set to come out this Friday, March 4 via Ghostly International, and you can help her celebrate its arrival the following evening at PhilaMOCA, alongside pals Spacin’ and Bachelorette, the synthpop project from New Zealander Annabel Alpers.

HOLD ‘EM – GREASY LONDON ROCK HITS THE CENTRAL

Posted on:

Nothin’ better than a band of greasy Canadians…and that’s what Hold’Em is. These guys hail from London, Ontario and just released their new single "Bender". Definitely appropriate track title. Fast and loud is the only way to describe this track. Clearly some Motorhead influences as they wail away through the verse and chorus. A bridge finds its way in there with a much more melodic tone to it and cleaner vocals giving it a nice dynamic. Totally some 90’s vibes in this track too reminding me of a mix between Pantera and the Smalls. Stellar lineup at the Central this Saturday with Hold’Em and Wine Lips opening for Two-Bit. – Kris Gies

TWO BIT – LIVE AT THE CENTRAL!

Posted on:

Interesting tunes coming from this Toronto group Two-Bit. Experimental jazz hip hop may have an odd ring to it but these fellas have some really cool vibes going. Really nice hip hop beats with tripped out vocal samples mixed in. Their tracks have an atmospheric element to it that could make you lose direction. You might fall asleep listening to them but you’ll have THE most intense dreams. There appears to be a bit of a mystery surrounding this group Two-Bit. One way to figure it all out is by seeing them LIVE at the Central on Saturday. Wine Lips and Hold’Em also set to appear. – Kris Gies

Bayonne (Formerly Known as Roger Sellers) Releases Gorgeous Looping Single “Appeals,” Album Coming

Posted on:

It may look like we’re posting about a new artist here, but (as many of you probably already know) Bayonne is an artist we at The Deli Austin are well familiar with; in fact, he graced the cover of our SXSW print issue just one year ago. Back then this artist went by his real-world name of Roger Sellers, but he’s now taken the lovely name of Bayonne, which we think is rather fitting indeed for his beautiful music.

Speaking of, Bayonne put out another drippingly gorgeous new track into the ether under his new moniker about a month ago in order to prepare the ears of the world for his upcoming album Primitives, his debut full-length as Bayonne. Bayonne is known for his single-man looping mastery, and this single, called “Appeals,” has him at his very loopiest best, layering synth-wrought bells, thudding drum beats, understated guitar, crowdsound vocal sample and his own voice over a bright, summery piano melody that rises and falls and rises again like a fluttering feather in the wind. It’s quite beautiful, especially at its heavily but delicately layered climax, and it shows that Bayonne may have a new name, but he is a musician who has worked hard for years to hone his particular sound into something all his own, and all sorts of good.

We can’t wait for the full release, which comes sometime in the next month going by his Facebook posts. You can pre-order it at Bayonne’s website here, whereyou can also check out his extensive tour list, which includes SX shows (at Waterloo Records, Container Bar, Barracuda and The Driskill) and a Spring tour all across the nation.

FOR ESME – “MAKE A SOUND” MUSIC VIDEO

Posted on:

Grab your 80’s time travel machine of choice…a Delorean or Telephone Booth perhaps…Toronto’s artpop trio For Esme go back in time to bring you this brand new music video for their track "Make A Sound". If I didn’t know any better I could have been fooled that it actually was a vintage track and video. New wave drums and synthed out bass lines with more synth and some synth in there too. Plus some beautiful yet lazy vocals as well. The band teamed up with Punctured Design for the video and it was so well done; bringin’ back that late night television nostalgia perfectly. Fool your friends who love throwbacks but claim to hate new stuff. For Esme will be performing at SXSW this year! – Kris Gies

The Boleys Do Some Damn Fine Shrieking on New Live Track “Learning”

Posted on:

We don’t often post live recordings, but this is some live-played raucous ass shit worth hearing y’all. The Boleys submitted to us as psych rock, and some of their other tracks fit that bill a bit closer, but what we’re hearing on the particular track we’re presenting you today is some fine, fucking hard post-hardcore/post-punk noisy freak out guitar music. It’s really a banner season right now for hard music in Austin, with acts like Carl Sagan’s Skate Shoes, Popper Burns, Super Thief, Sailor Poon and more making it clear that this isn’t just an indiefolk, pretty psych city, and it looks like we’ve got one more very talented trio to add to that ever-growing, ever-distorted roster with The Boleys.

In standout track “Learning” from their recently released live DaveTV.org recordings thick, thudding bass and snappy post-hardcore snare drive a diabolical pace that is matched and even exceeded in ferocity by lead shrieker Ethan Boley’s maniacal questioning self-aware (and self-deprecating) nihilistic vocals that remind me of Slint, if Slint went more with a punk structure. Raw, fierce emotion buzzes and thrashes in “Learning” just as the guitars do, and it all comes together for a very fresh and fiery take on the ole noise music thing, and we fucking love it. Oh, and if this trio weren’t interesting enough, they’re all from one family (thus the name), which is just cool and weird for a hard-ass band like this. You can check out the vicious punk-punch-packer of a track below, and head over to their SoundCloud for more from this session, which features a pretty diverse range of sounds from the band in question.

NYC/LA’s fuzz rockers Pink Mexico head to SXSW

Posted on:

Brooklyn via LA Pink Mexico plays a gritty brand of fuzz rock, but their airy melodies with psychedelic inflections counteract the harshness of their distorted sound. In 2015, the trio followed up their 2013 self-titled debut album with a two track 7" featuring single "Cigarette Split" (streaming below), a plodding, uber catchy mid tempo that has the sonic power to make you feel under the influence (a cheap high, folks!). This year the band will travel to Austin to play SXSW – the many Austin fans of psychedelic rock (not to mention the hordes of New Yorkers who will be invading that city during Music Week) should check them out .

Lionlimb impresses with “Shoo”

Posted on:

If you’re reading coverage on psych-folksters Lionlimb (and you are), you’ll more than likely hear a mention of Angel Olsen (and you have). And reasonably so—it’s an interesting tidbit of musical genealogy that the two guys behind Lionlimb have previously best been known as members of her band. Her shadow is undeniably a large one to escape, but if there’s anyone who could teach folks a thing or two about escaping big shadows, it’s former Bonnie "Prince" Billy acolyte Olsen.

It seems that these guys have learned that lesson and then some, as proudly showcased on the recently released-for-streaming Shoo. A nonstop soulful, groovy album offering its own take on 60’s-styled pop in a modern context, Shoo flows effortlessly from one piece to the next. It doesn’t demand your attention in any kind of aggressive way, but even if you turn your eyes toward another task, good luck keeping your head from bobbing along with the beat. To boast that these guys can stand on their own is an insult to what’s going on here. There’s no sense of trying too hard to make a path for themselves; they just let it roll, and the end result is rock-solid.

Shoo is available for streaming in full right now and is set for official release on March 3. –Austin Phy
