ELEL, Soft Bodies, and other Deli favorites depart for SXSW at South Bye this Thursday (03.10) at the Basement East

Posted on:

Not able to make it down to Austin and the sad demise of Couch by Couchwest has left a hole in your heart the size of the Lone Star State? Wipe those salty ol’ tears away, because the Basement East is giving us a chance to bid farewell to a couple choice locals, at the same time helping them with gas money for the long drive toward the border. Read up on the groups below and make a stop by The Beast this Thursday (03.10) to see it all go down.

——

ELEL

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a thousand times—ELEL is one of the most promising groups we can name. Their live show is a blast, every release is polished to perfection, and the music is so upbeat and catchy that we’re convinced "el-el" must be the sound it makes when joy claps.

Soft Bodies

Remember reading all about the debut EP from Soft Bodies all the way back in January? We dug it then, we dig it now, and we highly recommend you check out their textured, easygoing electronic vibes live.

KiND

KiND’s Eunoia is a trip through varying expressions of electronic music from modern, dance-y numbers to more pensive tracks that get you nodding along all the same, but more like you’re examining a black-and-white photo in a gallery exhibit.

The Gills

These guys have been keeping info about their debut LP locked down tight, but everything we’ve heard so far points to a thick stew of varying alt, punk, and hard rock influences that goes down easy and should keep you full for a good long while.

(On the other hand, if you are planning on being at SXSW, now’s the best time to start planning by taking a peek at the Deli Magazine’s preview coverage. Once you get there, don’t forget to check out our Stompbox Exhibit and Synth Space events, both of which are free and will give you a shot to try out some real fancy gear. Also keep an eye out for the Deli SXSW print edition, which can help you out as an invaluable guide around town, some reading material for when you’re waiting on a show to start, and in emergency situations, a little life-saving protection from the Texas sun.)

Q&A with Yonatan Gat: live at Webster Hall’s Studio on 03.11 + at SXSW next week

Posted on:

NYC-by-way-of-Israel guitarist Yonatan Gat performs and records as a power trio. The band’s unworldly instrumentals are unleashed live with a rare combination of energy and precision, so much so that the group’s performances have garnered a semi-legendary reputation, in particular in the DIY circuit, always welcome to artists that push the creative envelop without giving up punch. This year the band is literally taking over SXSW (list of shows here), but those who are not headed to Austin can catch them live at Webster Hall on March 11.

We asked the Gat are a few thoughts on being a nu-New Yorker and being psychedelic – or something. Read the Q&A with Yanatan Gat here.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best psych songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

New Music Video: “Vertigo Flowers” – Nothing

Posted on:

Nothing premiered a new music video for "Vertigo Flowers" earlier today over at Noisey. The paint splattered footage was directed by documentary filmmaker and videographer Don Argott (The Art of the Steal). The band was warned that "the paint would burn their eyes, taste bad in their mouth, and be very cold," and there could only be one take. The single is off Nothing’s forthcoming album, Tired of Tomorrow, which comes out May 13 via Relapse Records.

Toot Sweet unveils title track from upcoming album ‘Dilettante’

Posted on:

The uniquely evolving sound of singer/songwriter Mary Spencer Knapp’s “cabaret soul” brain-baby Toot Sweet shoots to grandiose levels on ‘Dilettante,’ title track of their upcoming album, scheduled for a March 25 release. Knapp seems to be focusing more on her vocal prowess, and the inclusion of the full-band feel, rather than the signature lost-art cool of her accordion. Thumping kick drum and bass start the track in a playful dance, as Knapp’s singing frolics on top, almost becoming part of the percussion section itself. It’s not long before the rest of the instruments swell and swarm around her voice — the crash of cymbals and fluttering trumpet eventually giving way to the audible clang of an old-timey piano, going back and forth in powerful contrast. Cool, ghostly backup vocals float in and out, adding to the ancient effect at the band’s, and Knapp’s, core. – JP Basileo

Petal Drops Anchor at PhilaMOCA March 6

Posted on:

Tonight, Petal, a.k.a. Kiley Lotz, fills out a bill of acts similarly rooted in emotive rock. Each group has their own take on influences young and old, forging tunes that sound fresh and familiar. Lotz’s versatility as a songwriter is often on display, from her debut LP Shame, released in September on Run For Cover Records, to her use of a rotating backing band. From slow-burning ballads to sparse acoustic laments, Petal’s songs are anchored by the musical Swiss army knife of Kiley Lotz’s commanding voice. Also, on the bill is Philly’s The Superweaks, whose power-pop braggadocio and crunchy guitar riffs always make for a good time. A simple name tweak is certainly not stopping this band, who just last year were on tour with Brand New, from making noise. The pairing is not surprising, considering the nostalgia factor that binds these bands and fans alike. The show is headlined by Somos from Boston, who recently embarked on a tour with Petal and The Superweaks as support. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $12, All Ages – Adam G.

Mumblr Van Fundraiser Show at Lavender Town March 5

Posted on:
In preparation for a summer of touring, Mumblr is headlining a show this evening at Lavender Town to raise funds for a new van. The band reels you in tight with their fragile table-setting revelations serving as potential energy that is converted into an fuzzed-out, raucous-stomping outpouring. The earnestly melodic sound of Clique does just that, offering snippets of personal/relatable songs that move with a sense of ease while lingering. Fresh off releasing their debut EP Mercy and before heading out on tour, the unadulterated, cathartic, harmonious yet lyrically haunting vibes of Fake Boyfriend persist, while the soothing eclectic haze of The City & I completes the billing. Lavender Town (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 8pm, $7 Donation, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Lawndale scuzz trio NOYES have already begun their tour up the best coast, after a Friday performance at the UCLA Co-op that ended with a police shutdown. Don’t worry: Kermit, Daniel and Ian ripped through their set. The neighbors and one of the officers agreed, "NOYES is being too noisey." They even waited until We think that was a compliment. The band’s next stop is at the Greenhouse venue in Arcata, CA with Chachi Hands and Dosidicus on the fifth. "Relapse" is now available on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon Music streaming services. – Ryan Mo

Brighten up with “The Innocents EP” from Kristoff Waltz

Posted on:

We still have some wintertime to go, but if the cold-weather blues have you down and staring at your offbrand lightbox isn’t doing anything but making the dreary morning reality harder to face, then The Innocents EP might be just what you need. It’s indie pop first and foremost with some surf leanings to keep things fresh, but the band’s tasteful instrumental finesse and penchant for earworm melodies subvert any twee blandness that label might imply.

The Innocents EP is available for streaming via Bandcamp, Spotify, and—since the 30-day trial you started to listen to The Life of Pablo is probably still going—Tidal. –Austin Phy
