Laura and Greg unveil a new, electric sound in new single ‘Alien’ + play Silent Barn tonight (03/08)

Posted on:

For their upcoming EP "GREYSHARKCANYON" (out on March 14th), folk-pop duo Laura and Greg gave in to the "Bob Dylan’s 1965 temptation," trading their beloved, clean acoustic guitars for a more electric and distorted sound. While maintaining their airtight harmonies and solid structure, preview single ‘Alien’ (premiering below) picks up the pace with harder drumming and fuzzy guitars, retaining the band’s signature sense of intimacy, but infusing it with a little urgency and a lot more energy. Take a listen below and catch them live tonight (03/08) at The Silent Barn with Cende, Peaer, and Retail Space. – Adriana S Ballester

Girlpool’s Harmony Tividad Steps Up to the Plate at Everybody Hits March 8

Posted on:

Harmony Tividad (of Girlpool) steps up to the plate at Everybody Hits this evening. With a minimalist, melodic approach, her songs etch an earnest understanding of the transitions and adjustments associated with adulthood. The sheer simplicity and somewhat confessional sound seems addressed to the individual, releasing a revealing internal monologue expressing an array of emotions – anguish, disappointment, hope etc. Exposing these private thoughts publicly gives rise to universal a feeling. With a new record almost completed, Slaughter Beach, Dog (a.k.a. Jake Ewald of Modern Baseball) captures expressively detailed snapshots that shed the protective outer layers, placing the nerves out in the open. They’ll also be joined by Cold Foamers, who recently released a new EP Musketball, and the sincere folk-pop of Florist completes a night at the batting cages that hits home. Everybody Hits, 529 W. New Music Video: “The Waking World” (Feat. I Break Horses) – Lushlife + CSLSX

Posted on:

Philly emcee/producer Lushlife, fresh off the release of his new album Ritualize (Western Vinyl), has a new hazy video for "The Waking World," his collaborative effort with CSLSX and Swedish shoegazers I Break Horses. It features a montage of vintage clips with the occasional Lushlife silhouette overlay and choice words from his rhymes. The video – mostly still frames and quick edits – is about as wide-ranging as the present influences on his latest record. While vast, the clip choices are far from random – each one either directly or indirectly referring to his lyrics. The bleary, dynamic footage is contrasted by Lush’s sharp-as-a-tack rhymes and stone-cold flow.

PREMIERE: Coco Columbia – “Weight on Limb”

Posted on:

We’ve got another new track to share with you today at the Deli, and it’s from our most pleasantly animated solo artist Coco Columbia. "Weight on Limb" is the first track off her upcoming album When the Birds Begin to Walk due out this summer. Inspired by underground poppy jazz and soul hits, the rhythmically intriguing "Weight on Limb" features layered arrangements that not only pique you interest but keep you hanging on their every movement. Coco Columbia worked with Sacha Miller on the engineering and production of the track and will continue to collaborate on the rest of the album together, so we can look forward to When the Birds Begin to Walk being just as masterful.

A single release show for "Weight on Limb" is happening tomorrow, March 9th at the Goodfoot. A music video will also be out soon, but until then, enjoy below.

New Track: “Down” – Marian Hill

Posted on:

“Down,” the latest release from the duo of Marian Hill, begins with the graceful, jazz-oriented keys paving the way for Sam Gongol’s elegant vocals. As your swept into the seductive subtlety, the afterburners of a glitchy, electro-percussive beat kick in. That low, warming flame switches gears into a hyperactive call to action, before simmering down and then raising it up again. The heat rises, yet Gongol maintains her cool.

Austin’s Most Exciting New Hip-Hop Act The Bishops Releases First Music Video

Posted on:

Damn, those Bishops are some hip-ass, musical-ass, Austin-ass kids. We showed you their stellar chilled out (but brained up) debut track ‘Blood Ring’ a few weeks ago, and dang if the trio hasn’t gone and put a nice video to the music already. In it we see the three family members strolling with confidence, and some real fine clothing, through Austin’s streets, most particularly in a striking scene going down the middle of the iconic 183 underpass. These kids are solid from the beats to the look to the way they step toward the ever-receding camera with understated assuredness in their own abilities, and this is likely be the first of many glimpses of these three faces of the future of Austin hip-hop that the city will get. Be one of the first on this good, good shit by taking a look below, and follow The Bishops at their FB page for more as this triad of dangerously talented kin release it.

Album review: Temp Tats – Ions

Posted on:
Temp Tats describe themselves as “somewhat spastic R&B.” I don’t think a better description of this sound could possibly be put into words. Their debut release, Ions, was released on December 14. In my own words, this album is confusing, poetic, psychedelic R&B. As soon as you get into the groove of any given track, it spins you around leaving you to wonder how you got there. You just sit and groove and try to find the root of the song you were just so into. WHOA. WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

The opening track to Ions is “Laser Lites.” Luke Waye’s sweet and smooth spirals are our anchor as we swoon over Eric Schuman’s vocals. “In the most perfect worst way” is the lyric that takes us out of the track over Chris Paul’s psychedelic guitar. Chris nails this sound, not overpowering. It sucks you in and leaves you tipsy. This track, while very good and currently stuck in my head, is not indicative of Ions.

The most interesting track, in my humble fan’s opinion, is “Cinnamon Spices.” This track was recorded by the locally famed Jorge Arana. If there is a genre for this sound, he might be the king of it. The track opens gently: Joel Schuman tickles the keys, you prepare for some sweet R&B. Luke layers cymbals underneath. Chris drops out and gives Eric some space for his smooth stylings. Eric takes you away with one poetic, run-on, beatnik sentences that you completely agree with. About halfway through the track, closing the second verse, something happens that changes everything. Wait for it, “no. NO. NO. AAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!” Eric lets out a metal wail. What? And that introduces the second half of this track that just turns into a guitar and keyboard explosion. It left me dazed, wobbly, and out of control.

My favorite track on Ions is “Slackjaw.” Let me be honest here, because it’s sexy and it makes me feel things. The fusion of every rule they break is so good. I’m exhausted listening to Luke. This track is nothing without his intensity. Joel’s keys seem to be placed just perfectly, they mellow out the magic chaos Luke and Chris are creating. The part that makes me feel things, Eric’s tenor and his lyrics on this track. His I-don’t-care, but-my-heart-is-broken, but “I am counting down the days until the next jailbreak” confidence. Gets me.

Fun Fact about Temp Tats: two of the members—Luke Waye and Eric Schuman—were the founding fathers of a little band called Ambulants. Self-described as grunge/jazz, they shared a few shows and a split 7” with the Jorge Arana Trio. That sound still resonates a bit, breaking rules and leaving me a little shaky, but in a much better way. Well done. I cannot wait to catch this party live. I’ll double up on my Ritalin dose when I get home.

Genre-Benders Purple Release Dynamic Single “Bliss,” Album on the Way

Posted on:

Boisterous, versatile, and bursting with energy, Purple is a fun-loving trio of mischievous musical adventurers that steps over genre boundaries with grace and ease. Having issued their debut album (409) to a more than receptive audience last year, Purple’s upcoming April release Bodacious should shine even brighter with enhanced production from label Play It Again Sam. The album’s first single “Bliss” embraces a dream pop-influenced intro, a stark departure from Purple’s norm, but it then comes full circle to the band’s rebellious, angst-riddled rock roots. Purple has tightened and manicured their sound to mirror other power pop groups like The Joy Formidable or Two Door Cinema Club, but their gritty Texan rock roots defiantly show through as well on this release, and we dig it at The Deli. Check it out on ‘Bliss” below, and watch their Facebook page for info on how to pick up the full Bodacious album soon.

Wolkoff announces release of ‘Without Shame’ LP

Posted on:

Names can be misleading. You might expect a band called Wolkoff to be led by unforgiving dudes with Eastern European accents, but it’s actually the project of (probably rather forgiving, and definitely not a dude) Brooklyn based artist Joanie Wolkoff, a multi-discipline artist who has traveled the world and absorbed many cultures (a Toronto native, she went to school in Paris, worked in Tokyo, and farmed in the Chinese countryside, according to this 2015 interview with She/Folk). Her new single "The Homecoming," from her upcoming album ‘Without Shame,’ is a synth pop gem featuring tasteful Asian influences reminiscent at times of some late Peter Gabriel and Japan records. The song reflects and epitmoizes Wolkoff’s cosmopolitan life experience, while showcasing her talent as a singer, songwriter and programmer. Check out also the other single from the album, ‘Kings Highway‘ – Wolkoff will celebrate its release at The Knit on April 19th, after a brief east coast tour opening for Jesse R. Berlin.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best electronic songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!
