New The Original Crooks and Nannies LP Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

Madeline Rafter & Sam Huntington, a.k.a. The Original Crooks and Nannies, just released a wonderfully intoxicating album in Ugly Laugh. The ten-song sophomore LP showcases the dynamic duo’s natural ability to lay down ear-burrowing melodies over lo-fi, bedroom beats. Rafter’s voice demonstrates a captivatingly beautiful versatility, with Huntington providing the right amount of playful accompaniment – thus, creating tunes worthy of your adoration. (BTW: Also, check out the twosome making the best/worst DIY wigs (out of their own hair) ever in the new music video for "Carry Me"!)

Combine Raising Your Pulse at KFN March 13

Posted on:

Though you just lost an hour from your weekend, you can still make the most of it by coming out tonight to Kung Fu Necktie. Genre-splicing art-punks Combine provide unrelenting, spastic yet calculated drum bursts that grab hold of you, while guitars slash and stab in an unforgiving nature. The result are tunes that have a ominous presence, raising your pulse with each measure. Laying the groundwork for the evening, Combine will also be joined by shoegaze-y alt rockers Blacksalt, slow-burning LA psych-rock duo Jerkagram, and headliners Throbbing Chakra, which features Lantern‘s Zachary Fairbrother. All is not lost yet. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 Front St., 8pm, $6, 21+ (Photo by Diego Muya) – H.M. Kauffman

Saturday Night Sounds: Shadowlands – “Clean Life”

Posted on:

This little bit of a late night Saturday Night Sounds jam is the latest from dark wavers Shadowlands. They just premiered the video for "Clean Life" a couple days ago on Gritty Birds, and their record release show is happening at Kenton Club as I type this. The video compiles esoterically shot clips of infamous Portland spots, reflecting the city in a brooding light that’s perfect for this gloomy, rainy night.

If you happened to have missed their release show tonight, dim the lights and enjoy.

Dad Works Hard now slated to open up for Simo

Posted on:

Local glam rock/badass outfit Dad Works Hard has just been added to open up for Nashville, Tn psych blues band Simo tomorrow night at Dante’s. The undeniably fun danceable quality of Dad Works Hard is guaranteed to bring a light and lively air to the bill. Paired with Simo’s classic production of southern blues rock, it’ll be a show unlike the typical shows that occur around town.

If you haven’t already, check out Dad Works Hard’s video for "White Shoes" below. It’ll give you some insight into just how enjoyable this band is.

Addie Pray Not Leaving the Door Open at All Night Diner March 12

Posted on:

Addie Pray, a.k.a. Carmen Perry, of Ohio’s Sports catches listeners on her narrative line, with songs that provide an intimate fly on the wall perspective – not leaving the door open, rather transplanting you into her line of sight. Capturing intimacy in a realistic, relatable scale, she adapts it to life’s expected adventures and setbacks. What initially appears to be a simple picture gathers deeper meaning through binding details, à la Waxahatchee and Free Cake For Every Creature. Brandon Can’t Dance develop a twisting experimental pop paradigm. It’s one with a constantly shifting position, engaging with it’s uprooted tones that range from fireside acoustics to eerie wave-rockers. The captivating lo-fi of Emily Yacina (who has collaborated with Alex G) is a sound you’ll feel instantly close to. The lineup is rounded into form by the hushed poetic folk of Yours Are The Only Ears. Moving Panoramas Brings Melancholy and Melody on “Radar”

Posted on:

Moving Panoramas is an all-girl Austin trio that explores dreamy soundscapes with fuzzed guitars and pained and emotive lyrics, and they have have continued to impress since their debut LP  One released last October. We’ve got the second single off One for you today, a bittersweet track called “Radar” that initially appears pleasantly uplifting, but the sweet sound is later tempered by the melancholic vocals of Leslie Sisson. The mood, seemingly subtle at first, eventually permeates the track and becomes intoxicating with its melodic potency. Just like their songs, Moving Panoramas is a band that seems demure at first, but their building brilliance wins over listeners in the end. See if they win you over with “Radar” below.

The Soaks tune in to their own channel on “TV Life”

Posted on:

San Diego trio The Soaks play sparkly power pop with a new wave slant, best evinced on their fast-paced, relentlessly hooky "TV Life". Its simple, hyperactive music video shows footage of the band members in true live form while poking a little fun at themselves, propping up a persistent rhythmic backbone to their energetic, trashy sound.

"TV Life" can be found on their latest seven-song EP Loser, released through Postmark Records. And for a show that’ll get you wildly bobbing your head from the get go stop by Harvard and Stone on March 31.

Eddi Front releases bewitching debut LP, “Marina”

Posted on:

This past Friday, Brooklyn avant-pop project Eddi Front (aka Ivana Carrescia) released her long awaited, bewitching debut LP, ‘Marina.’ Starting with the piano-chimed opener “Goldie” (streaming below) and including “Sing Sing,” a by turns sedate and lilting track that portrays intense romance with Plath-like fire, the album shows Carrescia as an artist fearlessly venturing into the dark and coming out with sharp beauty. If you missed Eddi Front’s show this past Saturday downtown, keep posted on her Facebook page for future announcements, or check out this mysterious live video for a taste. – Zach Weg

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best mellow songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Weekend Warrior, March 11 – March 13

Posted on:
Thin Lips are heading off on tour in support of their 7-inch EP release, Divorce Year (Seagreen Records), and will be hosting a hometown send-off show this Saturday night at Everybody Hits. The album showcases the band’s spry, hooky tunes that seem to indulge in equal parts Aughts pop-punk anthems and heavy Jawbreaker-style 90’s riff punk, which doesn’t make the naming of their forthcoming LP, Riff Hard (due out May 20 via Lame-O Records), that surprising. (You can check out the new music video for their latest single "Never Again" below.) Fellow slaves to the riff The Max Levine Ensemble will also be performing on the bill tomorrow, flaunting their lively, inexhaustible, sometimes political pop punk that tips the cap to turn of the millennium bands like Rise Against. Worriers will be on hand with a more subdued, pensive approach to the genre. And don’t miss Bellows, who will start the night on an intimate tone with delicately composed bedroom jams. Everybody Hits, 529 W. Girard Ave., 8:30pm, $8-$10, All Ages – Bryce Woodcock
