Struck by the synthpop auras of LUV, performing with .paperman in April

Posted on:

For the five minutes that I listened "f a n t a s y l o v e" by LUV, nothing else mattered. The tip-of-the-tongue ’80s intro, diffracting into effervescent, luminous meloromanticism left a taste half-metallic, half-citric in my mouth. It was like witnessing the birth of a musical deity, like the ones we’ve come to know through larger publications: Solange, Blood Orange, Sky Ferreira.

The bedroom project is as youthful as its sound, started by the enigmatic johnny since August 2015, with some material that s/he’d "been working on for years." Listing N’Sync, Prince, Britney Spears, and Ready for the World as major influences, johnny mixed ’90s pop, new wave and R&B inspirations with homespun technique, taking on a markedly different sound from the debut single "leave."

"Empress Of, MNDR, Kimbra, ABRA, this wave of female producers all inspired me to start taking my lil bedroom jams more seriously," johnny says.

LUV is currently planning shows in the Los Angeles area with .paperman in April; check back for more info. Until then, listen to the bedroom producer’s newest EP and hope that this is anything but a fantasy.– Ryan Mo

Weekend Warrior, Feb. 19 – 21

Posted on:
The Loved Ones deliver brash, energetic punk-rock mayhem. Beginning in 2003, the band has gone on to sign with Fat Cat Records, toured the globe, and released plenty of albums filled with heavy-hitting anthems. Around 2010, the band unexpectedly went on an unannounced hiatus, well, until last year, when they surfaced with a short run of shows already booked to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their debut album Keep Your Heart, which is being played in its entirety. The sold-out home gig is this Saturday night at Union Transfer, and they’ll be joined by tour buddies, Cayetana. The gals will also link up with Amanda X and Screaming Females next month for an exciting Planned Parenthood benefit at First Unitarian Church. The evening will also mark the triumphant return of Little Big League, who are amped to get back on stage together for the first time since the band needed to take a hiatus, after an incredible album release show, to deal with personal issues. But don’t fret if you couldn’t get a ticket for this weekend, because they’ll be playing again next Saturday with Lithuania at Everybody Hits. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St, 8pm, SOLD OUT, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Long Beard play Baby’s All Right on 02.29

Posted on:

Sleepwalker, Long Beard’s debut album, is aptly named, for listening to each song feels like maneuvering through the hazy edges of your most melancholic dreams – both here and there, warm, and cool, so close and yet so distant.  Perpetually teetering between sleep and awake, the album opens up with an instrumental track that sounds like it’s being played backwards, slowly leading into “Porches,” a song of desire and longing where Leslie Bear pleads “who do you love?/ Who do you love?/ And is it enough?” The album climaxes at "Dream" – before the vocals start disintegrating, becoming almost indiscernible, with the looping electronic textures folding into themselves – as if the silhouette of those gentle songs disappeared into a shadow and then became nothing more than a film blanketing the early hours of dusk.

“Please don’t forget/ You’re something I listen to/ When I’m not sleeping.”

Ben Talmi unveils video for ‘Pure’

Posted on:

An artist moving comfortably from glitchy folk, to orchestral arrangements, to spacey rock freak-outs, Ben Talmi stretches his canvas wide, reaching some far-out places with his music along the way. Thankfully, he also has a gift for making these sonic journeys sound incredibly catchy. New track ‘Pure’, from latest release ‘My Art of Almost,’ continues this path towards pop music transcendence, with a song that’s as much fun and colorfully rendered as the eye-popping video accompanying it. Check out the video for new single ‘Pure’ below. – Mike Levine (@goldnuggets)

Blood Sound Echoes 80’s Nostalgia at Everybody Hits Feb. 19

Posted on:
Synths figure prominently in this evening’s lineup at Everybody Hits. Blood Sound, who has a release coming out on Manimal Vinyl (Bat for Lashes, Warpaint) very soon, echoes 80’s nostalgia, tapping into one’s pulse as the trio thumps and cracks, establishing a hair-raising shiver, which reaches out as a warm spellbinding danceable call to action. In one moment, heavy bass-driven pressure appears like an ominous signal of personal implosion; however, rather than falling victim to a collapse, Blood Sound dashes through the debris, dancing in a relieving celebration. With quick-acting beats smoothed over by lush vocals, the duo of Lockets enclose you in their synth-pop setting. And with fresh material in hand, QQQ draws one into its enthralling sonic vortex. Meanwhile, Suburban Living will maintain the flow whilst spinning a DJ set throughout the evening. Everybody Hits, 529 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $5, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Church Girls Fill the Musical Void at JB’s Feb. 19

Posted on:
Mariel Beaumont started Church Girls as a side project to “fill the musical void in her life.” The once rebellious teen spent her formative years attending basement shows, drinking forties, and enjoying the best times of her life. So it’s not surprising that the ache and love for music have seeped into her bones, like many of us, who hear its calling to get involved. Church Girls received critical acclaim from the gate for its debut single “Young Planes,” and recently released its latest album Thousand Lives, which will be on display tonight. Now, solidified as four-piece, the band is set to headline Johnny Brenda’s. Also along for support are Queen of Jeans, who have been pleasing ears and making a name for themselves with vibrant, swoon-worthy pop, and Madalean Gauze, who is another feminine force and rising star in the Philly music community. The ladies will be ruling the stage this evening. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

New Track: “Dance (Get Off Your Ass) (Work Drugs Remix)” – Queen of Jeans

Posted on:

With Queen of Jeans‘s Matheson Glass having spent a stint in the band Work Drugs, a remix was bound to be spawned from their creative relationship. Below is Work Drugs’s reworking of the ladies’ debut single, "Dance (Get Off Your Ass)," which does a fine job at getting you to follow directions. You can find Queen of Jeans this evening at Johnny Brenda’s opening for Church Girls.

Chicago Best of 2015 Readers’ Poll Results! 1. Dos Santos Anti-Beat Orquesta, 2. Burnside & Hooker

Posted on:

The results for our Artist of the Year Readers’ poll are in! We’d like to thank everyone who voted in support of their favorite artists, and congratulations to everyone who made the poll this year!

1. Dos Santos Anti-Beat Orquesta (pictured above) was the fan favorite this year and for good reason. 2015 saw the Cumbia Jam band conquer SXSW and release a thrilling debut album, Dos Santos.

2. Burnside & Hooker was a close second in the reader’s poll but had no less of an impressive year. 2015 saw this blues and jazz influenced Americana band release, All The Way To The Devil, their sophomore album after a sucessful Indiegogo campaign.

3. Andrew Sa & His Organic Sound released their debut concept EP, For Tonight, on December 1st, and their beautiful sound nearly avoids classification. This collective of talented musicians prides itself on simple and authentic music and that is clearly garnishing them a termendous amount of support.

4. Jude Shuma is at the forefront of a Psychedelic revival in Chicago and 2015 saw him release his debut EP, Insomnium on Tiny Meow Records.

5. The Bribes round out this year’s Top 5 in the Reader’s Poll with their refreshing vintage rock sound. The Logan Square band released their latest album, Nobody Got Anywhere, in 2015.

Again, congrats to everyone who was included! Our nominees went out of their way to promote the poll, and they certainly deserve your attention.

Thanks to everyone who shared and voted, and remember to keep an eye on the Deli year-round for all the freshest coverage on new music coming from Chicago!

Indie folk Wylder drop new single Swells, 2/15

Posted on:

If a beautiful were ever to be heard, it’s certainly this new track from DC’s own Wylder, a leading indie folk band in the city. Coming in hot off packed shows at the W Hotel and DC9, this friendly sextet is keeping up with their track record of great music. Swells is uplifting, sweet even, and makes full use of the band’s talents – not many can pull of having a violin, mandolin, and keys on the same track, but Wylder certainly does. Throughout the song, you can hear each note struck and get lost in the melody before you realize it and it’s guaranteed to make the day a better one. Catch them tomorrow night, 2/19, at the IOTA Club & Cafe in Arlington. -Jonathan Goodwin

Sharks In The Deep End’s First Single is New Wave Dance-Pop Goodness

Posted on:

Sharks In The Deep End is an Austin quintet with a uniquely developed sound that melds jilted New Wave vocals with infectious dance-pop, and they’re currently gearing up to release their debut LP Killin Machine (April 22). The first single off of that debut album is called “Shadows In The Sunset,” and it’s a smart fusion of eclectic influences that rattles along to the urgent warble of vocalist Tucker Jameson. The secret weapon of Sharks In The Deep End is the pounding punk influence that adds backbone to the pop melodies and doesn’t allow the listener to become complacent for a second. If the full Killin Machine album proves to have the same alchemy as Sharks In The Deep End’s first single, then it should be a special debut. Catch the single below, and if you see this today (February 18), you can get an eyeful of these guys at their very first show ever tonight at 8pm at Studio C.

Holy Tunics take their lo-fi pop to Rough Trade on 3.04

Posted on:

Trying to find information on Holy Tunics is like trying to catch Alice’s white rabbit: a challenge, to say the least. You see them pop up here and there long enough to catch a trail but, as soon as you come near, they run off and you’re left waiting for them to surface once more. The Brooklyn band has two songs accessible through YouTube and Soundcloud, and their sound is lo-fi but inviting: gritty guitars, scruffy beats, and Nick Roger’s voice languidly and nonchalantly drawing catchy melodies reminiscent of pre-drug-abuse The Lemonheads. If you wish to experience this first hand don’t miss their upcoming show at Rough Trades with Dead Stars and Infinity Girl on March 4th! – Adriana S Ballister
