Abi Reimold Opening for Julien Baker at Boot & Saddle Jan. 20

Posted on:

The wait for Abi Reimold’s LP Wriggling via Sad Cactus Records will end shortly when it’s released next week on January 26. However, those who don’t want to wait that long should head to Boot & Saddle this evening, as she occupies the opening slot. Reimold entices with incisive lyrical imagery and a variation of instrumental tones that ranges from tranquil folk reflection, building to noisier turbulence and controlling the dynamics in a way that reveals vulnerability, while simultaneously unleashing a fierce force to be reckoned with. Tonight, Reimold will be paired with the beautifully aching honesty of Julien Baker. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8:30pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

UZi gets down and dirty on debut EP

Posted on:

“Excuse me,” the disgusted-looking girl on the cover seems to be saying, “but who the fuck do you think you are?” Disgust is the word of the day when it comes to describing Sc’UZI, debut EP from local boys UZi. They’re disgusted, they’re mad, and they’re ready to have a good time with it—all while being as loud and raucous as they can. That said, these guys didn’t get so caught up in a feeling that they forgot to put on that final layer of polish. This a sleek effort, and the perfect vibe to keep your spirits up on a snowy day like today.

SHEER and Young Jesus performing with Sioux Falls, Cool American

Posted on:

Open wide: tonight, decibel diner pehrspace serves up a five-course meal for East LA with sommelier Bed Weather and maître Diy4Lyfe. Alex Nevins (fka Songs for Ghosts to Haunt to) cleanses the palette with a selection of acoustic amuse-bouche as Simi Valley shoegazers SHEER stir a hunger fierce with their debut album Uneasy.

Chicagoan settlers Young Jesus make good on their promise to sate volume-starved fans after a close call at Emerald House, and Portland touring bands Sioux Falls and Cool American will likely leave Echo Park yearning for seconds — you’ll be relieved to know that the Oregonians are also playing Thursday at Fullerton’s Programme HQ. S.N.R. releases blissed-out self-titled debut EP

Posted on:

While band names with upper case letters has become the latest hot commodity, leave it to S.N.R. to bring back the good ol’ acronym. If you were wondering, S.N.R. stands for Soul Natural Remedy, an apropos designation for a duo that writes soulful folk songs that linger in a state of dreamy, pleasant languor. Made up of duo Grant McCloud and Corbin James, the songwriting partners found an equal compatibility for music while working together at Yellowstone National Park in 2014 before they made their move to North Hollywood. It may not be the most exciting of stories, but it is theirs and truly theirs alone, after all. The oddly frazzled songs on their self-released debut EP are surreptitiously psychedelic, moving in a blissed-out state that is sure to meet you with a warm, pleasant glow; much like its leisured pace, they’re poised to carve a songwriting identity that is sure to bloom with bright splendor.

Free Download: “Dig” (Nothing Cover) – Real Don Music

Posted on:

Music can bring together the strangest of bedfellows. We highly doubt that when you think of a song by Philly shoegazers Nothing, an orchestration of horns enter into the mix. Watching/listening to how music affects music through the history of music is always something that never gets old with us. So on this hump day morning, we’ll be starting things off with a downtempo, trip-hop cover of "Dig," which originally appeared on Nothing’s critically-acclaimed 2014 LP Guilty of Everything (Relapse Records). The recording was produced by Real Don Music, the solo production project of Kirk Huffman (Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground, Gatsby’s American Dream). You can stream and download the single for free below.

New Music: Pharaohs – Ritual

Posted on:

Local indie rock band of brothers, Pharaohs, are gracing our ears with a new single! New releases from the group are few and far between, so listen up and enjoy this energetic rock track. Rituals is about a rebel lady and her vices and is a classic hard rock song with a solid base line, simple and catchy chord progressions and full, smokey vocals. This long awaited release strays from the melodic jams that we’re used to hearing from the boys but it’s ok because this track is fast paced with perfectly timed breakdowns. –Julia deAnda
