Help Love Cop replace their stolen property!

Posted on:

Gnar Tapes sweethearts of Portland, Love Cop, have been trudging through the recent blizzard for their Laid 2 Rest in the Midwest tour. Today, while having a look around Sun Studios before their show in Memphis, Tn, some dillweed broke into their van, stealing thousands in band merch and personal effects. Most of us have had things taken, it sucks, and no one likes it. Help these boys out. We’re all starving artists, musicians and creatives, so we’ve got to have each others’ backs. Anything helps and click the link to their Go Fund Me page HERE.

Super Thief’s “dump sink” EP Makes them the Most Interesting Noisy Band in Austin, and Maybe Anywhere

Posted on:

Fucking yes, this is that shit you wait for all year as an Austin music fan.

Super Thief is back after a spectacular album from last year, bringing us a furious record with the new dump sink EP. Back in March of last year we said that Super Thief’s eponymous last record hit our shit-wrecking nerve nice and good, and dump sink picks up right where that record did, except that it’s even heavier and more outright fucking vicious.

The four track EP is the band turning up everything that was in their last record, and that means it’s some rip-you-apart shit from beginning to end. The high-burning, churning pace starts from the get-go with heavy, fast, straight to 100mph opener “dog fart,” and it doesn’t let up a tiny bit on song two, “euthanasia.”

The tracks on dumps sink all seem to fuck with the idea of what a song should be in 2016 Austin, ditching all the indie prettiness and poppiness and burning a fiery trail off down that more experimental, dangerously hard path that shit like Death Grips, Liars, Flux Information Sciences, Fugazi, Sonic Youth etc. have gone down before them. Super Thief seem like they’re mad about the way people in the supposed underground think songs are supposed to be now, and even the names of the songs feel like damaging jabs at the expected.

Super Thief is obviously hitting a hell of a stride here with these two excellent releases. They’re seriously getting franticness right, using their distorted, whining guitars with Super Thief’s signature crunch sound, their screaming vocals and devastating speed in a tight-as-fuck structure for music that simply doesn’t let up. With the release of dump sink and their album from last year, Super Thief isn’t just a very interesting noisy local hardcore band anymore; they’re maybe the most interesting noisy band I’ve heard period in a long time. Live Review: Meishi Smile at The Echo 1/22

Posted on:

The pikachu backpack threw a lot of people off, including a couple who stood left of The Echo’s stage. Earlier, Nylo had lulled the audience with ease despite being a last-minute add. She lulled me, too. An indigo summer bathed the alt-R&B singer as bodies swayed to her glass notes. So when Meishi Smile set up, half of the crowd were none the wiser. Hidden among chillwave hopefuls, Zoom Lens’ cult following showed their true colors as Nadia Ulerich sat, fingers curled like a full lotus and a masked Lindsay Anne drew out the gong. Obscured by a black lace veil, Garrett began and people were grounded, some wounded by its immediacy — noise and synth, autotune and scream. But in the din of cyberpunk closer "…Belong", they understood. Briefly.

Survivors and the sated scanned their surroundings as Jeremy Malvin took the stage. And together, they entered the chrome forest. Need more be said? – Ryan Mo, photo credit: Joey Tobin

Come out to the benefit for Danny Moore

Posted on:

Last Friday, Portland resident and friend to many of us Danny Moore was struck by a car off of MLK and NE Jarrett St. The assailant eventually turned himself in, but Danny was still left with two broken legs among other injuries, not to mention a mountain of medical debt. Because us Portlanders take care of our own, a benefit show to aid Danny is being held this Monday, January 25th, at Dig A Pony. Playing the benefit will be Dyslexics The, a solo set by the Woolen Men‘s Lawton Browning and tunes spun by DJ Bad Wizard. The 21+ event runs from 9pm-1am, with all proceeds of course going to fund Danny’s recovery. Come on out and help a friend in need!

Crescendo to release sophomore LP Unless in February, free show at Acerogami 1/29

Posted on:

Dreampop darlings Crescendo are set for release of the sophomore album Unless, with plans for a national tour and performances at this year’s SXSW. Led by flagship single "Repulsor", trio Gregory Cole, Olive Kimoto, and Jess Krichelle explore hyperspace romanticism, diving in and out of star clusters with celestial melodies and post-punk rhythms. The band drives up their momentum following last year’s performances with diverse acts like PART TIME, Glasz, The Unending Thread, and Cruelty Code. Unless will release through Italian label We Were Never Being Boring on February 19th.

Crescendo plays a free show with Crown Plaza at Pomona’s Acerogami next Friday — Gabrielle Costa (DREAMWAVE) and Jim Smith (The Smell) switch up shoegaze, dreampop, and post-punk hits in-between sets. Listen to "Haunted", the second track off Crescendo’s upcoming album Unless. – Ryan Mo

PREMIERE: The Century – “Here’s to Nothing”

Posted on:

The Century‘s Losers EP came out just late last year, and as their second EP, it’s already on it’s way to maintaining their position as indelible contenders in Portland’s rock n’ roll scene. Today, they’re dropping the lead track on the EP, "Here’s to Nothing." It delightfully plays with both the lo-fi distortion of classic garage rock and the catchy, sing-a-long aspects of a good pop song. Let "Here’s to Nothing" serve as the anthem to the apathetic soul in all of us. Listen below!

Philadelphia

Weekend Warrior, January 22 – 24

Posted on:

Upon first listening to Philly’s self-described punk rock band Cayetana, it may be difficult to isolate a traditionally punk influence beneath the layers of pop mindfulness, stirring melodies, and undisguised, often poignant sincerity. The songs have a driving pace that is somehow unhurried and tunes that are downright whistle-able, accompanied by lead singer Augusta Koch’s Emily Haines-esque voice that never quite breaches the boundaries of “inside voice.” The minimalist guitar progressions and dynamic energy of the songs are unmistakably traceable to punk rock, but the connection becomes clearer when you examine the ethos behind the music. Lyrics from different songs seem to unite around the concept of carrying on as usual, despite knowing you’re part of an arbitrary system – sort of reminiscent of the early punks’ understandings of the sinister “institutions,” eh? After all these years, what still makes punk punk are these internalized feelings of alienation and dispossession, which, with punk bands like Cayetana, are being combated through emotional transcendence rather than generalized aggression… Which is also a movement that self-fulfillingly defines itself as punk simply by subverting its predecessor. This three-piece punk outfit will be having their Tired Eyes EP release show at PhilaMOCA this Saturday accompanied by Mannequin Pussy, a Philly essential who comes from the more aggressive, irreverent side of the punk spectrum, Katie Ellen, a.k.a. Anika Pyle of Chumped, who will bring a passionate lo-fi melancholy to the stage, and Jeff Riddle & the Bella Vista Social Club. PhilaMOCA, 531 N 12th St., 7:30, $10, All Ages – Bryce Woodcock

Update: Due to inclement weather this show has been postponed to 1/30/16.

Boston’s Sober Rob plays Middle East in Cambridge on 1/29

Posted on:

Over the past few months, Boston-based "future music" artist Sober Rob has released instantly compelling electronic tracks on his Soundcloud page. While the August-released "Bliss" is a merry, jazz-inflected swirl of perky horns and skipping beats, "Sonder" (streaming below) from this past December is a considerably more eerie track of percussive pings and zaps that could play over a foreboding science-fiction movie. While different in tone, both songs convey Sober Rob’s impressive ability to stir emotion with just the computer at his hands. Sober Rob plays at Middle East in Cambridge, Massachussetts on 1/29. – Zach Weg

Honey Radar & Telepathic Co-release Show at JB’s Jan. 22

Posted on:

Congregate this evening at Johnny Brenda’s to commemorate not one but two new recordings – one by Honey Radar and the other from Telepathic. Led by Jason Henn, Honey Radar continues to serve up heady psych-pop on their new EP Giraffe, available via Chunklet Industries. The vocals waft, expanding around the gratifying immediacy of the granular grooves. These condensed sonic rides glimmer while retaining rougher edges. Sarah Everton & Rob Garcia (formerly of Bleeding Rainbow) slice through the cosmic sludge, sharing vocal duties. Rushing forward as the clean heat of guitar wields with fuzz, creating a gripping composed sense of urgency, their new self-released record Time Release is potently pulsing. Maryland-based rockers Repelican crack the seal on this night with a combination of stealthy smoothness and rattle. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Posted on:

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band have offered a glimpse into their latest sonic voyage, a double LP The Rarity of Experience which will released March 3rd via No Quarter. “High Castle Rock” is an expansive riff-steered quest that gathers intensity after rolling through in a familiar mesmerizing fashion.  The Rarity of Experience lifts off with a record release show March 26 at PhilaMOCA with 75 Dollar Bill.
