Well, it looks like Mo Lowda & the Humble have shortened their name to simply The Humble. They also have a new album, titled Act Accordingly, coming out on March 11. It’s the trio’s first record in over two years. You can take a listen and download for free below the album’s first single, "No One Stops." The Humble will be heading out on tour for most of February in support of Act Accordingly, and will be back home for its release show on Sunday, February 21 at The Foundry with Commonwealth Choir and Pine Barons. Cinematic bill at Rough Trade tonight (01.14) with Andrew Keoghan
According to his biography, Andrew Keoghan’s second album "Every Orchid Offering" – due for release later in the year – is the "product of two years of writing and recording between Auckland (New Zealand) and New York, where Keoghan relocated in 2013." Since the write up makes it sound as if he was going back and forth on a monthly basis or so, we couldn’t resist the temptation to check out the average cost of a JFK-Auckland flight – ouch! It’s a 26+ hour trip (or 2+ days if you want to save $6-700 bucks), and if you ever dared to go through that torture, Andrew’s music would definitely be a soothingly helpful soundtrack for it: his songs unravel calmly, alsmost sleepingly, with the various instruments patiently building a sparse sonic web, complemented by melodies that push the boundaries of gentleness. The new record is presented as "a series of vignettes and short stories, some autobiographical, others imagined, but always very personal." You can stream his well received debut here. Check the first single "Stuck in Melodies" from the new album below. Andrew Keoghan will be performing at Rough Trade tonight (01.14) with instrumental NYC composer Frank LoCrasto.
New Track: “The Ecstatic Cult” (Feat. Killer Mike) – Lushlife
The latest sneak peak into Lushlife’s highly-anticipated album Ritualize has emerged. Co-produced with CSLSX, “This Ecstatic Cult,” which you can stream over at The Fader, finds Lush in an invigorating rhyming exchange with Killer Mike. Amid the enveloping electro-soul backdrop, a pertinent message is delivered. Ritualize will be released February 19th via Western Vinyl. (Photo by Ebru Yildiz)
argonaut&wasp releases new single “The Sneeze”
argonaut&wasp, a smooth soul-dance duo we covered first about a month ago, just released a new single entitled "The Sneeze" – you can stream it below. The track is the first one of a series of new singles to be released from now until the summer, when it will finally be possible to hear the band’s music in its more appropriate environment: the beach. You may argue that the title of this single is actually rather wintery… well, not necessarily; it could refer to that peculiar and bizarre sneeze doctors refer to as "photic sneeze reflex" – also referred to as "sun sneezing," a condition that – according to Wikipedia – "affects 18-35% of the population (including yours truly), but whose exact mechanism of action is not well understood."
The Danger O’s Residency Kickoff at Ortlieb’s Jan. 13
On three consecutive Wednesdays, beginning this evening, The Danger O’s can be found at Ortlieb’s. As the band works on a new record, it’s sure to sprinkle some fresh material. Their contagious brand of power-pop captures that warmed-over sensation as tightly coiled backend spring-loads the intimately open vocals. It’s casual in tone yet sealed in air-tight. That laidback, confident air, in which harmony is met with the reserved ability to unleash gritty command at opportune, elevating moments, makes these sticky songs potent. Tonight, Hold Down The Ocean will be in support for the first evening of the residency. The four-piece, which recently signed to Dullest Records and also includes The Danger O’s Dan Metzker as well as Joe Brown, Patrick Shannon and Steve Wiegand of All Else Failed, develop a marinated, pungent rockin’ sonic charge that gathers blistering force over time. How Portland deals with the loss of David Bowie
For the last couple days, we’ve all been sort of drifting throughout our daily routines sadly shocked by the loss of our icon, David Bowie. For most, myself included, nothing about the news seems real. The countless posts summing up his career into music video-laden listicles, the numerous social media posts reflecting on his memory. No matter how truthful they may be, it probably won’t become a personal truth to a great deal of his fans (again, myself included) for a very long time. This being said, the people of Portland have basically banded together in a mournful celebration of his quite influential existence, creating quite a few gatherings for the lost ones to attend. If you’re the type of person that needs collective grieving, here a few things happening around town where you can commiserate with others over booze and Bowie’s extensive collection…
- – FREE Tribute to Bowie at Clinton Street Theater, January 13th at 9:30pm.
- – 1 Side: Stories for Bowie (live interactive karaoke) at the Black Door #1, every Saturday for the next 7 weeks.
- – David Bowie Sendoff at Pioneer Courthouse Square, January 16th at 2pm.
- – Bowie Forever: A Stripped Tribute at the Kit Kat Club, January 17th at 10:30pm.
- – David Bowie Tribute Show and Cancer Charity Benefit at the Analog Cafe, January 29th at 9pm.
- – Starman: An Evening of Tribute to David Bowie w/the Parsons Red Heads and special guests at Mission Theater, February 6th at 8pm.
I will try my hardest to keep up with any more events and add them to this post, as they come up. Live forth and rock on.

Best of NYC 2015: Open Submission Results for ALT ROCK:The Chorades, Psychobaby
It’s time to tackle the ALT ROCK category of our open submissions for the 2015 edition of our Best of NYC Poll for emerging artists – you can see the results we published so far here.
ALT ROCK/POWER POP
Total submissions in this category: 21
Jurors: Jason Behrends (The Deli Chicago), Jordannah Elizabeth (The Deli SF) PDG (The Deli NYC).
Artists qualified to the next stage (i.e. the Readers’ Poll, starting around 01.20):
1. The Chordaes – 7.66 (out of 10)
A just over one year old group of "Manhattan-born friends" (take that, Brooklyn hipster-immigrants, these guys are real New York, New Yorkers!), The Chordaes’ music features elegant melodies, measured arrangements and a rather mellow approach, and may be best described as Alt Pop than Alt Rock – although the latter is the category they submitted for. But this doesn’t really change the fact that this is a group of young and talented musicians with noteworthy songwriting chops, and a vocalist that can touch hearts in ways reminiscent of unforgotten NYC hero Jeff Buckley. Check out their single "Touch The Ground" and see them live at Rockwood Music Hall on January 30th.

2. PSYCHOBABY – 7.5
The brainchild of fiery Brooklyn based singer songwriter Juliet Garrett and guitarist Godfrey Furchtgott, Psychobaby only released one song out at this (very early) stage of its career, but a song that – paired with an imaginative and well shot low budget video – bodes very well for the band’s future. Sonic references to the riot grrl sound of the ’90s are tempered by the lack of slacking: the band’s sound is focused, Garret can sing, and the songwriting seems more inspired by artists from previous decades, like, for example, The Pretenders or even Exene Cervenka’s X. Having attitude, character and a good song+video combo is a great start for an emerging band; Psychobaby’s next challenges are prolificity, consistency of songwriting and a building killer live show. You can see the band live at Bowery Electric on February 13th.

HONORABLE MENTIONS (rating above 7):
Mustardmind, Justin Baron, Warn The Duke, Sketchy, Bloody Your Hands.

New Video: “Enough” (Live) – Residuels
Garage-punk power trio Residuels stopped by WXPN to record a live session. The band also brought along a couple of vintage 16mm cameras to document the visit. Film is pretty damn expensive so the guys had to nail their performance in one take. "Enough" is an unreleased song off the group’s forthcoming debut LP, which was recorded with Jeff Zeigler at Uniform Recording. You can also catch Residuels live this Sunday, January 17 headlining Johnny Brenda’s.
LA punks West America release “Hello Dog Friendly” split with UK’s Porridge Radio
Those who decry modern technology as something that keeps humans isolated and music overproduced will be swiftly hushed by "Hello Dog Friendly", a split EP by two bands who became friends over Soundcloud, despite being separated by a continent AND an ocean. West America, an LA duo that draws rowdy crowds in spite of singer/guitarist Hannah Shoenfield’s tender lyrics, delivered with more fraught emotion than one would expect from a punk band. It’s no wonder they hit it off with Porridge Radio – the band feels uncannily similar in spirit to West America. They’re both noisy, with little care for polished takes; but their rawness counterpoints the poetics that lie beneath.
Both bands also have a penchant for eerie moments of experimentation – on West America’s track "Gentrify the Moon", I mistook presidential candidate Ben Carson’s voice, on a bizarre sample talking about stabbing someone, for David Liebe Hart’s (the man who puts on creepy puppet shows outside the Hollywood Bowl after concerts). On Porridge Radio’s end, standout song "Get Out of My House" feels gentle and ghostly, with distant moans floating over a sighing accordion.
The split is to be released digitally and on cassette January 13th, by Memorials of Distinction in the UK and Have To Do This in the US. Preorders are available now at the Memorials of Distinction Bandcamp. – Brittany Scheffler
Live Review: Media Jeweler at VLHS 1/10
"I wanna do Passport. I wanna do Passport."
The harmonics and bass loops of "Looking Glass Reprise" drowned out Sam Farzin’s cries, and he relented. Christmas lights and butcher paper cutouts shuddered with each strum. The nondescript DIY space VLHS —cousin to recording house/makeshift venue The Palisades— has been a musical hub for Pomona and the greater Inland Empire for four years running. On Sunday night, over 40 warm bodies packed themselves inside the walls, resting on the half-pipe, offering bud and new friendships as the tremors of Media Jeweler rattled their skulls.
The atmosphere was loose, and it smelled like Red Forman’s basement.
Earlier, Jack Connor of opening band hit me, Harold joked about his goatee before burning a hole in our stomachs faster than you can say Rafa’s Tacos. DOCKS frontman Ranier Tinkelenberg broke a string, but still slayed the crowd with Jack’s honeyblonde Tele. Winter Break (ex- Summer Vacation) let out the most luscious screams as Mark Chen and Aaron Kovac gazed into each other’s eyes. And to top it off, Hillary Chillton spoiled us at the end of the night with a new song (as of now un-named), going overtime with closer "Sad Dad/Rad Dad".
Everyone knew the lyrics by heart. And everyone sang. Long live VLHS. – Ryan Mo
Puppets Sex, Fight and Care for Each Other in Sweet Spirit’s New Music Video
After a thoroughly solid indie rock album release in 2015 with Cokomo, that was itself a quick follow-up to a spectacular split with influencer and fellow Austin rocker Britt Daniel of the legendary Spoon, few Austin bands enter this new year as hot as Sweet Spirit. To add fuel to that fire, the act has just released a new, gripping music video for Cokomo track “Baby When I Close My Eyes” that joins Anomalisa in the surprisingly fast-growing “Early 2016 Super Artsy and Emotional Puppet-Based Films” subsection of pop culture.
That upcoming movie with its realism+puppets thing is more of a touchstone to go with when understanding what hitting play on this music vid than something like the Muppets, because this here video is dark and serious, including a good, healthy heaping of violence both puppet on puppet and human on puppet.
Both the video and the track discuss modern life and its troubles, with director John Valley saying about the various storylines in the video, “We weren’t preoccupied with the three plots leading you to a final message, yet the characters all go through a life-altering experience and come out the other end scarred but still in love.”
Singer Sabrina Ellis says about it that “People will either love it or hate it and that excites me,” and you can decide for yourself which way it makes ya feel by taking a peep below.
