Pet Sun Showcase Grizzly New EP

Posted on:

Pet Sun has been one of my favorite bands to come around in the last year. They have 2 EPs and a single "Never Quit" available right now, but new tunes from them have been long awaited to say the least. Their new EP "Shade Driver" has three tunes on it. The first is a 6 minute dirty masterpiece "Dark Planet" which begins with a sweet guitar lick and a mellow groove. It expands into a full on garage onslaught for the chorus. Hold on, cause half way through they slow the pace down and turn the fuzz up ,which, in turn, essentially f*cks shit up. It’s captivating; you’ll get lost in the "Dark Planet". The following tune "Zenifer" is their fuzzy pop song; catchy rhythms and a sweet ass solo to finish it off. "Mrs. Warp" is the next track which has an extended guitar/vocal intro and an intense doom vibe. When the drums kick in it has a slow head bangin’ feel to it. These guys like to tease; obviously I’m excited that they are releasing new tunes, but I just selfishly want a full record already! Go get "Shade Driver" by Pet Sun on physical disc or digital now!

Shred Your Eardrums w/Mannequin Pussy at Hong Kong Garden Dec. 5

Posted on:

The aptly self-styled “shitpunk” bruisers Mannequin Pussy are renowned for their raw, unrestrained performances of piercing tunes that shred your eardrums like sonic cheese graters. Their reckless and unapologetically crass sound situates them alongside bands like Tacocat and Be Your Own Pet, while their outlying softer songs meander toward a more listless indie rock foundation, like something out of the late 80s Creation Records repertoire. But any lapse in the band’s “shitpunk” momentum is easily regained in a live setting, with each ensuing song, usually clocking in between 1-2 minutes, a self-contained noise-bomb of barbed wire and razor blades. Mannequin Pussy will be dishing out the raw power tonight at Hong Kong Garden with The Spirit of the Beehive, another local favorite who will round out the tonal frequency of the night with their low-end fuzz. SOTBH explore the bleak, more brooding side of noise rock and shoegaze, owing its dark but dissipated tonal signature as much to MBV as to Smashing Pumpkins. Their songs show an inclination toward heavy, dissonant riffs, a talent for complex but subtle melody, and a keen sense for song progression that sometimes never looks back or returns to that hook that captured your initial attention. All of this gives the music an indulgent but slightly withholding nature that resembles bands like Swirlies or Jessamine if you gave them a couple of bellowing Marshall stacks. Joining this stacked lineup will be Littler with their uneasy brand of slacker-punk and Tennessee space-rockers Idle Bloom. Hong Kong Garden, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 7pm, $5-$7, All Ages – Bryce Woodcock

Bask in Sunbathe’s video release

Posted on:

The ethereal voice of Sunbathe (and Genders, respectively) can only be attributed to one Maggie Morris. With her devine murmurs in tow, she’ll be debuting and releasing a new, surprise music video. She’ll be sharing the premiere fame with the golden girls of Golden Hour and the ever popular Is/Is this Saturday, December 5th, at Valentines. It’s not entirely clear which video she’ll be premiering, but it’s sure to be a delight, especially combined with those additonal performances. Tickets are only $5 at the door. WORTH IT.

A beautiful video/song from last year: Aerial East’s “Fog”

Posted on:

We stumbled upon Brooklyn artist Aerial East through the listings of Hypnocraft’s upcoming event at the Manhattan Inn on 12.17 (a Joni Mitchell tribute night featuring NYC artists). We immediately enjoyed the project’s intimate songs, intense and sparse to the point of sounding ghostly. But were literally blown way by this video for single "FOG," where passion, madness, love, death and sex coexist in the most heart wrenching way. Check out also single "It Doesn’t Matter," from earlier this year. We also just found out that she recently shared the Mercury Lounge’s stage with Deli favorite, like-minded ghostly lady Okay Kaya.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best mellow songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Live Review: Deep Fields at Harvard & Stone 12/03

Posted on:

Last night’s birthday bash for Dirty Laundry TV’s Michael Grodner was pretty epic, confimed by The Deli’s guest photographer David Foley. Read his first-hand account of the performances at Harvard & Stone and find more pictures on @TheDeliLA!

"Deep Fields felt like an electronic river of synth leading to a waterfall of whammy bar. You could tell the band members were enjoying being on stage together, and this translated into an uplifting wall of sound.

Colleen Green was like strawberry bubblegum, but with a bite. She had a very laid-back yet punkish vibe.

The Abigails were like raw molasses: down home rockabillies singing about love and death. Their lead singer was super expressive and entertaining, and I can’t remember a song that didn’t have a guitar solo."

Live Review: Miya Folick at Bootleg Theater 12/03

Posted on:

We got into the Bootleg Theater for Miya Folick‘s EP release party thinking it’d be a pretty intimate gig. Some people trailed in as the sound guy checked levels with his iPad, but it looked sparse. No one was staking claim to the tables in front of the bar stage.

Then, five minutes before the set, a flash mob fashionably swarmed out of the theater end. It was lit.

Shannon Lay of Feels started the night with songs from her solo debut Holy Heartache while Alaska Reid (Alyeska) traded banter and set fire with her newest single "Medicine River". Miya Folick’s performance, enhanced with the visuals of Vinyl Williams, drew a crowd so tight the photographers could barely move around. Lena Fayre‘s ethereal voice drew the night to a close with songs from her summer EP "Is There Only One?" Shoutout to Liv Marsico (Liphemra) for spinning in-between sets (we did cry), and we think we caught a glimpse of Jeremy Katz (Froth, HOTT MT)? That was tight.

Check our Instagram @TheDeliLA for more pictures from the show, and catch Miya again at The Satellite on December 17th for a benefit show with Mereki and Madi Diaz! – Ryan Mo, photo: Michelle McCausland

Birthmark releases “How You Look When You’re Falling Down” LP at Rough Trade on 12.13

Posted on:

Birthmark, aka Brooklyn musician Nate Kinsella, will be celebrating the release of album "How You Look When You’re Falling Down" at Brooklyn’s Rough Trade on Sunday, December 13. The band’s special one-night-only lineup will feature a heck of a lot of high profile guests, including Matt Bauder (Arcade Fire, Iron and Wine), Chris Hainey (Maps & Atlases), Olivia De Prato & Victor Lowrie (Mivos Quartet), Justin Frye (PC Worship, Skeletons), Cory Bracken (Real Adult, Ashcan Orchestra, Iktus Percussion), Diego Clare, Peter Hess (World/Inferno Friendship Society, Asphalt Orchestra), Sam Kulik (Skeletons), and Jordan McLean (Antibalas, Iron and Wine). Wow, talk about name dropping! But besides that, the two preview singles from the album sound very intriguing indeed: Birthmark offers a compelling mash of electro, orchestral pop, afrobeat, and conceptual rock a la Brian Eno. We are enjoying streaming track "Find Yourself," but check out also "Suit of Armor" which lacks the awesome tenor sax section, but features interesting middle eastern strings and a tighter, tenser beat.

Weekend Warrior, December 4 – 6

Trek through the cosmic debris as Kohoutek celebrate the release of their Curious Aroma LP at PhilaMOCA this Saturday night. Available via London’s MIE Music, the band launches into epic, noise-rattled, sonic voyages. Instrumental tones (which originally seem at odds) gradually marinate; the strength of intensity permeates bending space and time into submission, momentarily seizing one’s headspace in the process. Joining in on this head trip is the almighty Brother JT, who will be making his usual human sacrifice to the rock gods.  Rosali gets the night rolling, prepping the launching pad to send things out there. Four great locals play Mercury Lounge on 12.10: Big Thief, Nick Hakim, Sam Evian and Pavo Pavo

Posted on:

Lower East Side’s Mercury Lounge is an important venue for emerging NYC bands, because it represents a trampoline towards other more prestigious Bowery Presents live show "opportunities." Sell it out, and it may unlock Rough Trade’s stage a couple of months later (ask Lewis Del Mar about it, he ALSO sold out the W’burg venue this past Tuesday, by the way). On the flip side, if your band’s draw is poor or unsatisfying, you may have a hard time getting booked there again. So… those are the rules of the game, and four super talented emerging NYC artists will face those odds on December 10, in a 100% local bill, something of a rarity at Mercury. We covered in this blog several times alt folksters Big Thief, soulful songwriter Nick Hakim, and orchestral pop quintet Pavo Pavo. We never covered Sam Evian (pictured), the new solo project of Sam Owen of Celesital Shore, but that very band graced the cover of our mag a couple of issues ago. The material we have access to for his solo project (limited to the song "Cherry Tree," streaming below) explores a ballad sound that, flirting with pop, blues and psychedelia at once, is reminiscent of that intense masterpiece that is The Beatles’ "Abbey Road." Don’t miss this show, great opportunity to catch four great emerging locals in one night.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best mellow songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

APE! Record Release Show at KFN Dec. 4

Posted on:

After releasing their latest full-length Hunting With The Lord (their first via Reptilian Records) a couple of weeks back, the melodic, punk-metal hybrid known as APE! headline a record release show this evening at Kung Fu Necktie. The power trio continues to refine a sound that’s parts gate-storming backend, the commanding bellow of lead vocals, and dynamite-lined, fuzz-noise textured ripping guitar solos that set off the situation. It is furious, strategically-placed, going hard and heavy with a target in their sights. Tonight, they will be joined by the fire-starting, riff-drum crack combination of Georgia duo Twin Trances, unleashing the menace. The space-traveling, fuzz-filtered rock of DC’s Polyon soar into town, while a pair of local acts in the gloomy, grungy stomp of duo Worst Ones and Fishtown’s Blurry Yeller complete a robust lineup. Kung Fu Necktie (Upstairs), 1250 N. Front St., 10:30pm, $5, 21+ – Michael Colavita
