Static Mountain Lift Off at Boot & Saddle Nov. 3

Posted on:

Psych-rock quartet Static Mountain lift off from an earthly summit through the upper atmosphere and into the unknown. However, the launch isn’t a rough rocket blast that shakes your core. It’s a smooth venture – harmony-rich that gently spirals into the void, instilling confidence at cruising speed before ratcheting into a heavier gear. Thick, tightly-sprung, heavy grooves propel this long-term expedition, jamming toward a new frontier. Tonight, the launch site is located at Boot & Saddle, where a pair of freshly sprouted local outfits in Cherry and Comb will join the ride, while the joy-inspired, self-described “baby punk” of Boston trio Free Pizza is certain to shake off those workday blues, releasing the tension in an exuberantly loose flourish. Young Rival drop “Interior Light” LP + play Horseshoe Tavern on 12.17

Posted on:

Last week, Hamilton’s indie favorites Young Rival dropped their latest album "Interior Light", and shared the title track. It’s their first release since 2012’s successful "Stay Young". The new album doesn’t stray too far from their signature sound, without sounding like more of the same; oldies melodies over indie rock riffs and soaked in reverb. Somewhat obscure-sounding opener "Carry The Weight" sets the table for a very interesting album. The rhythm is tight and groovy and singer/guitarist Aron D’Alesio has an uncomplicated and cool guitar style throughout. My personal favorites are "Where It’s All Going" and "Bent Out Of Shape". The trio are heading out very soon for a full on North American tour with Born Ruffians. They will be at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, December 17th, and at the Casbah in Hamilton December 18th. Don’t miss them! – Kris

Lawrence Lindell’s final album, release party Friday

Posted on:

Noise Met Sound head and IDM artist Lawrence Lindell will release his last self-titled solo album this Friday with an intimate party at Industry Gallery, featuring installation work from local artist Rachel Rusenko. Lindell confirms that he will still operate Noise Met Sound, curating and playing live shows that mix different modes of creative expression.

This final album, with Lindell’s trademark concoction of found sounds and chopped beats, chronicles his life after Britain, starting over with a new job, a creative slump, and reconciliation with his mother in Los Angeles.

"For a good while after being back I was crippled with depression. I couldn’t write and everything I created was shit and disappointing to me."

Lindell eventually focused his energies to write and publish a self-help book, which effectively reboot his energy and propped him to complete the album.

You can pre-order the last album here on Bandcamp. Listen to the opener "Still Free to Live" below. – Ryan Mo, flyer art by Dustin Garcia

NYC’s Fayway flirts with jazz in latest album “Dreamboat”

Posted on:

Fayway is a NYC quartet influenced by Joni Mitchell’s more "adult" sounding albums (late ’70s-early ’80s), when the Canadian songwriter’s flirt with jazz became more obvious. Singer songwriter and keyboardist Morgan Heringe leads the group with her pristine voice and sinuous melodies, built on chords whose name would puzzle most rock musicians. On their brand new third record "Dreamboat" – the more linear and less experimental in her repertoire – her band mates gracefully seconds her songwriting style. Single "Pretty Crazy" (streaming below) is the album’s highlught – at least in our opinion. – photo by Sean Pierce

Pepi Gingsberg launches new project N-A-R-C with video for “Venus, TX”

Posted on:

Brooklyn based electronic producer/songwriter Pepi Gingsber (whose previous band Companion was featured in our blog and mag back in 2012) has just unveiled a new project called N-A-R-C, with this new video inspired by Korean ‘Mukbang’ performances, in which cam-stars eat food in front on an online audience for entertainment – a brilliant idea to… push fame-seeking anorexic models to gain weight and attention at once? The single comes from her forthcoming debut EP ‘New Age Real Change,’ due February 26 via INSCAPE.

The Deli Philly’s November Record of the Month: Beach Music – Alex G

Posted on:
Amid increasingly high/steep expectations, Alex Giannascoli, a.k.a. Alex G, released his latest full-length album Beach Music via Domino. After a jarring, noise-laden percussive “Intro,” “Bug” crawls under your skin and skillfully into your head as its crisp guitar lays the foundation for the song’s mesmerizing tone, stripping down temporarily instrumentally – “and when you go there/you stay there/bug in the crosshair/you stay there.” A momentary electric guitar swell marks the return to movement.

The scratch of acoustic guitar chord changes, and a gloomy organ develops the rained-in, haunting sound of “Thorns.” Conversely, to the weathered weary sound of its predecessor, “Kicker” immediately jumps into action as advancing percussion/guitar dictates a forward blitz of lyrically rhymed oppositions – “White bird in a black cloud… big fight for a small right.” Wrapping tightly woven imagery into a steady downhill stomper, the track sits smooth, whilst retaining a gritty after bite.

“Salt” returns to that head-in-the-clouds, daydreaming ethereal bedroom vibe. Soaked in keys and accented by electronic percussion, the scene is set. “Into my big cloud, I’m flying all the time.” As he watches, opposing deep and child-esque soft vocals stir in a chanting manner, Alex questioningly reemerges – “Did you hear what I said? I’ve got salt in my head,” resolving his issue in a calm yet despairing manner. “Today I washed my hands, I want to be alone, I want to fry.” “Brite Boy” lifts with light-as-a-feather percussion, and its innocent beach-strolling instrumentation is underscored by a playful call-and-return vocal dialogue. Ushered in by the tandem of dashing trumpet and dreary keys, the artist tears himself open, and is left emotionally exposed. “Crying I’m running in love/losing in love/scratching in love/wired in love.”

Alex G continues to evolve, creating songs that aren’t afraid to expose life’s knack for pulling one individual simultaneously in multiple directions. That’s why Beach Music thrives in its ability to paint grey clouds within a sunny landscape or a ray of light bursting through a downpour. His honest, hypnotic melodies and its murkiness pull you in. – Michael Colavita
