TONIGHT: Yankee Blood Debuts EP “Honey” at The Stone Fox

Posted on:

Sure, they call cokes "sodas" and don’t put enough barbeque sauce on anything and scoff when we mention the cold weather, but some folks from above the Mason-Dixon aren’t half bad. And if Yankee Blood‘s debut EP "Honey" is any indication, these indie dream pop carpetbaggers are earning their keep in Music City.

After years of performing as a solo folk act, frontwoman Kelly Ruth traded in her upright bass for synth pedals, met up with her creative counterparts, James Karp and Adam Verone, and together, they are putting a spin on alt pop that will satisfy a sweet tooth you didn’t even know you had. With Ruth’s breathy vocals atop combinations of traditional and sampled drums and a tele with a healthy amount of reverb, Yankee Blood are swirling together classic instrumentation and modern effects to create a sway-inducing sugar-rimmed cocktail. And we’re ordering another round.

"Honey," put out by Palaver Records, is a 4-song Philly cotton candy daydream with radio-friendly hooks and enough depth to resonate with the sometimes-hard-to-please Nashville crowd. Come out to their EP release show at The Stone Fox TONIGHT at 8:30 pm to hear them live with The Gad Gods, Cataline Crime and Kylie Rothfield and pick up a copy. -Caroline Bowman

Daniel Romano brings his moody country to Mod Club tomorrow (11.11)

Posted on:

Did you happen to watch the Country Music Awards the other night? I will admit I flipped to it for a second… and I’m a bit confused because there wasn’t any country music, not sure what you call that stuff. However there’s an Ontario fella making his rounds these days that makes REAL country music. His name is Daniel Romano and he hails from Welland, Ontario. He used to play punk rock but now has settled on making old time western tunes. He has a number of releases including 2011’s "Sleep Beneath the Willow," which has a very soothing folk feel to it. 2013’s "Come Cry With Me" sounds like your grandparents’ country music and before you turn your nose up just have a listen and enjoy the wonderful melodies – they might make you cry though. This year he released his latest album "If I’ve Only One Time Asking" and with this album he really comes into his own making the same old time country with a more original feel to it. Many of the songs seamlessly blend into the following track which makes for a very pleasureable listen. The best example of this is tracks 2 and 3 "Old Fires Die" and "Strange Faces". Both great tunes, definite highlights of the album. Daniel spends a lot of time touring through the USA but we’re lucky enough to have him right here in Toronto tomorrow night at the Mod Club. Take it from a rocker… this is bad ass music. Enjoy. – Kris  Gies

Providence duo INFJ plays Machines With Magnets on 11.20

Posted on:

Providence duo INFJ calls its music "mom rock" and its January-released EP ‘s/t’ provides the sublime consolation of that parent. Mostly Americana-twanged folk with a splendidly poppy number ("Best Laid Plans," streaming below), the five-song album gracefully explores such common feelings as longing and loneliness with compassion, Scott Thompson’s patient guitars and Hayley Simmons’ gliding voice providing angelic warmth. The creaky elegance of early Sharon Van Etten and Grizzly Bear is a possible influence on these songs but, largely due to Thompson’s pining lyrics, they sound remarkably fresh. New Track: “JOBS” – Slaughter Beach, Dog

Posted on:

Slaughter Beach, Dog (Jake Ewald of Modern Baseball) has released a new track “JOBS.” The song continues a tradition of lyrical depth to explain life’s ongoing conundrums. The ponderous wordplay wraps around your head touching on employment, love, religion, etc. on the continuous existential journey. Though consciously contemplative, the single doesn’t retain an overly heavy feel, letting the lyrics stir without holding you down. (Photo by Jessica Flynn)

Son Step Opening for Sinkane at JB’s Nov. 10

Posted on:

Son Step is a group that pushes the expectations of convention, with a sound that is a refined, tight unit. In this way, the songs offer a glimpse of cleansing clarity, while simultaneously offering a new perspective, blending the unfamiliar within a stable setting. The instrumental energy is fluid, undeniably dynamic, and measured to precision. With a freshly cooked batch of sonic treats coming out of the oven this evening at Johnny Brenda’s, the band expands the musical palette. Marrying sleek R&B while inserting snippets of rock, Steven A. Clark, whoreleased The Lonely Roller a couple months back, bridges the divide between the persistent, percussion-filled, funky, free-jazz, wide-reaching, universal sound of Sinkane, a.k.a. Ahmed Gallab. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Emerging NYC shoegazers: No Honeymoon

Posted on:

Shades of classic ’90s era dreamgaze can be found woven through the music of Brooklyn’s No Honeymoon (not to be confused with shoegazing colleagues ohnomoon – there’s almost an anagram there!). Their sophomore EP “Together Alone” (the second one in quick succession after debut "I Wanna See Everything") presents three well produced tracks recorded at Converse Rubber Tracks studio. Lead cut “Yes/No” (streaming) opens with Slowdive/Souvlaki-style looping, which soon gives way to a fuller band sound. Fuzz-buzz guitars and fluid drum fills echo the band Ride, and are complemented with a female voice. Melodic guitar lines emerge between vocal segments, further enhancing the songs overall charm. Unlike role-model band of the shoegazer sound My Bloody Valentine, the vocals presented here aren’t buried under deep layers in the mix, but rather quite clear, and vocalist/guitarist Cait Smith exudes a level of passion and appeal with her semi-distressed delivery. The band has been playing a number of shows around town lately and this EP can be had at their bandcamp page at the always popular name-your-own-price. – Dave Cromwell

DENIM SKELETONS Release “Into The Fright”/Mississauga Release Show

Posted on:

DENIM SKELETONS like it eerie, grimey and loud. The spacey four piece bring a different kind of energy to their music, with a creepy garage-rock vibe underneath a squeeky-clean sheen of beautiful songwriting and production. Leading up to the release of their first full-length album, “Into The Fright”, they’ve teased us with one last single to wrap our heads around. “Mall Doll” alternates between a slow trudge, sparce and spine-tingling, and a beautiful punk-waltz. It hits hard, blasting a wall of noise that is both pretty, and pretty frightening. Layers upon layers of meticulously etched out instruments, noises and vocals paint a picture worth screaming about. They’re hosting a big release show with a ton of other local talent, be at Clarke Memorial Hall in Mississauga, Nov 27th.
