Lo-fi Sideways Orange releases new LP, We Are The Moon Dogs, and play OUR House, 10/31

Posted on:

Remember the 90s? Drive-in movie theaters, cassette tapes, and Al Gore have faded, but the music has persisted most. Richmond’s own Sideways Orange has cultivated their sound from such influences, with a bedrock of punk, alternative, and garage rock, dressed sensibly in postmodern lo-fi and indie. It’s the kind of soundtrack kids would use for skateboarding videos, but is mature and high-energy enough for the underground venue of your choice. Get yourself a copy of their latest album, We Are The Moon Dogs, and check them out when they play a Halloween show at OUR House on 10/31.

Laser Background Opening Teen & Ava Luna at JB’s Oct. 25

Posted on:

Capturing experience from a youth inspired, playful perspective, Laser Background dishes out a marshmallow pillow of airy psych-pop. With some new material on the docket, the Andy Molholt-led group puts a Willy Wonka spin on their songs. The shapes and atmosphere of the resulting cathartically twisted sound doesn’t play by standard rules. In this sonic space, imagination reigns supreme. Tonight, at Johnny Brenda’s, Laser Background lays the groundwork for the distinctively funky art-R&B of Brooklyn’s Ava Luna, whose jubilant tones are continuously in motion, while the vocally rich, soothing sounds of Teen headline. Album review: The Sluts – The Sluts

Posted on:

LFK darlings The Sluts’ self-titled second album is just what the doctor ordered. Assuming, of course, that you’re in need of a dose of brash, fuzzy, garage rock, most potent when chased with a shot of bourbon and some cheap yard beers. And let’s face it, you probably are.

The Sluts’ eleven tracks—four of which (“Let Me Go,” “Loser,” “Green,” and “Linger”) were previously released on last year’s The Loser EP (here’s our review of that)—are for the most part quite one-dimensional. This isn’t a bad thing. Ryan Wise (guitar and vocals) and Kristoffer Dover (drums) are not trying to overthink their craft, but instead are content to give listeners fun, mostly up-tempo ball-busters, lasting under three minutes.

The songs are a unique blend of early grunge and edgy punk. Think of Mudhoney joining forces with The Stooges. Wise’s slightly whiny, reverb-laced vocals are nearly as distorted as his chunky, drop-tuned guitar, and Dover’s relentless sonic booming is filled with crash cymbals. The result is a much larger sound than one might expect from just a two-piece band, although I would be interested to hear the added depth that a bass guitar might bring.

Three songs showcase Wise and Dover at their best. The crunchy “Green” is reminiscent of Alice in Chains, both vocally and musically. Dover’s tom rolls give it a defined groove, and set it apart from many other tunes on the album. “Be With You” is a fast, driving love song with interesting rhythm variations and guitar like a machine gun. The highlight of The Sluts is “Linger,” which begins with a catchy surf-like guitar hook, and becomes a thrashing, angst-ridden anthem. The use of fuller chords and incessant drumming allows it to have as much breadth as two instruments are capable of providing.

The album’s final track, “Simple Song,” is the only truly slow song of the bunch. At first it seems a bit out of place among the other ten turbulent tunes. However, there is a good reason for it to be included. It informs the listener that the thrill ride has come to an end, and that it’s okay to take a deep breath and relax. It’s like a much-needed lullaby being sung to a rambunctious, yet exhausted, child.

If you’re in need of some background music for resting, studying or a candle-lit dinner, you should probably avoid this album. If you are leaving work on a Friday, and are ready to roll down the windows and get mentally prepared for the weekend, by all means crank it up. The Sluts isn’t high art or even hi-fi. It’s rock & roll, baby.

Catch The Sluts tonight at a free in-store performance at Mills Record Company! Show starts at 7:00 pm.

New single by James Supercave is weird, and we love it: “Better Strange”

Posted on:

The psych-pop matador James Supercave came out with a new single yesterday, and by the first line we’ve already lost the game. From the wheezing synth riffs to Joaquin Pastor’s choked falsetto, "Better Strange" unravels with a bass thump, shuffling around with anxiety like the most invisible wallflower at a house party. It’s moody, yes, and sounds uncompromisingly honest. Uncompromisingly weird. And it’s glorious.

"Better Strange" is our first glimpse and title-track to James Supercave’s debut album. It’s available to stream on Soundcloud and for purchase on iTunes. See the band live with VS Colour and Miya Folick at the Echo on November 11. – Ryan Mo

Tall Tales & the Silver Lining announce digital-only new EP, play the Bootleg on 11/7

Posted on:

Tall Tales & the Silver Lining is a music project led by singwriter Trevor Beld Jimenez, whose Americana-tinged folk rock songs are informed by that rich 70s California soft rock sound. While there’s a staunch traditionalism to his songwriting approach, Trevor also takes from the heartland rock movement of the turn of the century; tracks like "Let It Go" have that twangy uptempo groove reminiscent of Heartbreaker-era Ryan Adams, and earlier single "Something to Believe In" – also from his full-length debut Tightropes, lends a low-key groove that Patterson Hood would be proud of.

Trevor just released a free download of a new track, entitled "Burning Out", from his upcoming digital EP Unknown Forces. The EP will also be released in a mobile-web format, which will feature new live tracks, a new video for "Unknown Forces", a band interview, liner notes, and even an integrated Spotify playlist for the full Tightropes LP.

Unknown Forces is out on October 30th through Other Music Recording Co, and don’t miss their show at the Bootleg on November 7.

Brooklyn singer/songwriter Joni Fatora plays Pete’s Candy Store on 11.8

Posted on:

Almost a year ago, Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Joni Fatora released her latest EP, ‘Navigator.’ Featuring mural-like cover art pleasantly reminiscent to that of Fleet Foxes’ ‘Helplessness Blues,’ the five-song effort also has one of the most beautifully-rendered songs of recent memory: the pretty yet serious "Blueless Bird" (streaming below). A tropicalia-sunned piece of folk, the guitar-curled track has the early-twenties Fatora impressively employing the image of a forlorn winged creature to convey larger themes of solitude and longing, her patient voice almost coddling the listener to a kind of calm acceptance of life’s more melancholic moments. Following performances during CMJ this past week, Joni Fatora plays on a Sofar Sounds Secret Show and on 11.8 at Pete’s Candy Store. – Zach Weg
