Although most indie rock fans think to Pavement’s Steven Malkmus as the father of lo-fi rock and the slacker attitude applied to the genre, British mad genius – and Pink Floyd founder – Syd Barret anticipated this trend in his three, beautiful, post-Pink Folyd/pre-madness solo records from the early ’70s. Matthew Van Asselt’s band Real Life Buildings sounds to us like he’s heavily inspired by Barret’s casual singing, lazy melodies (as in "Black Kettle") and preference for an overall aesthetic that predilects semi-unfinished sounding recordings (check out opener "In The Sky Today"). The band’s sound is also filtered through the lens of the 90’s US college rock, with distorted power chords often taking over the reigns. Check out our favorite song "It Snowed," which also features a rare banjo in the chorus. You can see Real Life Buildings live at Baby’s All Right tonight (10.02)
Free Download: “The Thrash Particle” – Modern Baseball
Modern Baseball’s latest “The Thrash Particle” hits home with the struggling tug and pull of a relationship. Its personal/relatable anecdotes lock you in. On Saturday, Santa Ana’s DIY venue Top Acid hosts OC Femme Fest
Santa Ana DIY venue Top Acid is hosting the OC Femme Fest this Saturday to show support for the local community with a multicultural, multiethnic celebration — October 3rd also happens to be the birthday of Swiss-born German feminist writer Verena Stefan, but that’s probably coincidental.
Listen to the gothpunk flavors of SLO’s Loko Ono, Deadpanzies‘ dissonant splash of no wave, the satanic revivalist pop of Bellhaunts, and the bedroom folk of Bathroom Friends. An art gallery featuring local creatives Ratsy, Olyvia Ashley, Pam Serrano, Clit Or Crush, and Beverly Salas will also be up for viewing.
The vintage store/DIY space only recently changed its name in 2014, and has been grounded with local shows, with interviews, fashion lookbooks, and other great stuff by tastemaker Joellen Love and owner Christopher Gonzalez.
Show some love for Top Acid and check out Femme Fest on Saturday — it’s all-ages and free! – Ryan Mo
Is this world-dream-math-pop? Outside World releases debut LP at Cake Shop on 10.08
Ben Scott and Hazel Rigby’s band, called Outside World, plays a pleasently surprising amalgam of dream pop, math rock, and world music. Single ‘I Know You’ (streaming) starts with an intro that defies a tempo signature – stuff a la Radiohed, but not pompous at all – and then settles on a weirdly synchopated, vaguely funky rhyhm, switching cleverly between sections featuring different variations of triplet-based rhythms. For reasons beyond our comprehension, both this single and the other one available online (‘Wasting Time,’ a simpler pop song sung by Ben) trigger Calypso references, probably because of Scott’s synchopated guitar lines, which often feature a chimey tone vaguely reminiscent of a steel pan. Both songs are included in the band’s upcoming, self-titled album, which will be released through a live show at Cake Shop on October 08. We are intrigued!
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!
Warik “Wasting Time 4 U”
Last week we brought you the latest single from Warik, and this week we have the colorful video for "Wasting Time 4 U".
Let Kississippi Give You Shelter From the Storm at Milhouse Oct. 2
So, just in case you haven’t heard, Hurricane Joaquin is fast approaching the East Coast. We are lucky that Philly will (hopefully) only feel its effects with a damp, dreary beginning to autumn. Don’t let the weather stop you from heading down to Milhouse this evening though. In fact, let it serve as a thematic prep for a night of dreamy, relaxing and melodic bedroom-pop courtesy of Kississippi. The Philadelphia-based outfit, featuring Zoë Reynolds and Colin Kupson, will provide the perfect audible backdrop for such weather. Their music is reminiscent of Frankie Cosmos and Mitski in its enveloping sense of calm, precision and emotionally intelligent lyricism. Alongside Kississippi, local math-y electro-rock/pop quartet Edelweiss, folk-punk singer-songwriter Little Tyrant, and New Jersey alt-pop/psych rockers Dollys will add layers and nuance, while maintaining a set focused on introspection and the expressive quality of the vocal performance. Milhouse, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 7:30pm, $3-$5, All Ages – Blake Oetting
Amber Flight
Amber Flight is Moriah Hoyt, Ardin Jameson, Mike Hoyt, and Zach Maa. They released their debut EP, A Bright Star earlier in 2015. The EP is on the lighter, more pop, side of Electro-pop. It’s filled with airy vocals and synths, and is a very enjoyable listen. My favorite track is "City Lights" below.
You can catch Amber Flight at The Abbey Pub on October 22nd with House on Mars, Adrian Vera, and Black Rhino. (Photo by Matt Allen)
The Deli’s NYC issue #44 is online!
Deli Readers,
I know, it seems like we put our latest issue out just the other day – but no, we haven’t switched to monthly. It’s just that the fall in NYC is a busy time for us, and with CMJ week and our NYC Synth Expo (linked to BEMF) coming up, there’s a lot to write about.
Here’s our 44th issue of The Deli NYC (one of our finest!). Check out cover band Stolen Jars, they’ll be performing at one of the (several) Deli CMJ 2015 shows!

New Music Video: “Lay Down” – Son Little
We’re definitely city people, but Son Little‘s new music video for the single "Lay Down" has us longing for a more secluded life with our loved ones. As he shared with Vibe, “I wrote this song lying in bed with my lady, listening to the tea kettle whistle. I think about how complicated our lives are, all the ones and zeros distract us from what we really need and want. Sometimes I just want to take your love and hide.” The track is off his forthcoming self-titled debut album, due out October 16 via Anti-. Son Little will also be headlining Johnny Brenda’s on November 13.Until then, get lost in this video that was directed by Kevin Clark.
The Great Heights Band release new LP, Songs in Eastern Standard Timing, 10/16 at Ottobar
If their name gives any indication, The Great Heights Band clearly have set their sights for the skies, playing sweet rock music that hearkens back to the the early 2000s, the era of skate parks and boomboxes. The bass lines are classic, but the key are contemporary, mixing for a radio-ready ensemble. Their new album, Songs in Eastern Standard Timing, is dropping 10/16 and the band is celebrating with a show at Ottobar to boot. You’ll be jumping and dancing from start to finish, so don’t miss it. -Jonathan Goodwin
