Los Colognes, “Dos”

Posted on:

We’ve been on the road quite a bit over the last few weeks, so consider this is our public "THANK YOU" to Nashville’s own Los Colognes for releasing the best driving music of the year.

The guys’ sophomore full-length release, fittingly named Dos, is a heartfelt fusion of classic influences like Dylan and The Grateful Dead and strong personal style, carried out with precision and ease. And, it’s damn good.

The guys have already garnered stellar reviews from Consequence of Sound, Stereogum and other folks who know a thing or two about good music, but trust us, you’re going to want to review this album for yourself. -Caroline Bowman

Honduras unveils video for “Paralyzed” + releases “Rituals” LP + play Shea Stadium on 09.16

Posted on:

Brooklyn’s Honduras play the attitude card big time on this new video for single "Paralyzed," off their debut album "Rituals," scheduled for a September 25 release. We are digging the tense sound and tribal but uptempo post punk atmospheres, reminiscent of a mix of Joy Division and The Feelies, and the well produced succession of clean/quiet and loud/distorted section – that’s what rock’n’roll is all about! Lead singer Pat Philips’ vocals have also grown in confidence, which is a huge asset for an emerging indie band with big ambitions. See the band live at Shea Stadium on 09.16.

Celtic rock group Scythian hosts inaugural festival, Appaloosa, and promotes new LP, Old Tin Can

Posted on:

Long established in the Washington music scene, Celtic-Gypsy-folk rockers Scythian have turned a vision into a reality, organizing, hosting, and playing a festival of their own design. For many families in the Shenandoah Valley area and for many from across the country, this Labor Day weekend was made much sweeter by attending Appaloosa, a roots music festival that met its mission statement with great success: "Music Among Friends." Featured on NPR and The Washington Post, the experience was nothing to simply drive past. It was small in scale, but the energy and enthusiasm of the audience, the performers, the volunteers and vendors was one of welcoming and family. A family-friendly festival set in a scenic ranch resort just outside of Front Royal, VA, Appaloosa was something to behold.

Dan Fedoryka, Scythian’s own rhythm guitarist-vocalist-accordionist, related his experiences organizing the festival and playing full-time in the band for a decade. As has been the focus of their Kickstarter-fueled albums, the band’s focus is on their fans, giving them memorable experiences through their shows, music, and now Appaloosa. When planning a concert, Fedoryka’s priority is to spare no expense and give people the party of a lifetime, a philosophy that has inspired several weddings between Scythian fans and developed a widespread, dedicated following. A tenth of Appaloosa’s profits are being given to charities, mostly local to Front Royal, the hometown of the Fedoryka brothers and gracious hosts to the festival. The whole affair was lively and exciting, featuring local, small business vendors and acts from all over the country and musical spectrum, which were purposefully chosen to reflect Scythian’s breadth of sound. While the festival may be over, the spirit it brought will surely last the listeners until next year, which all are urged to attend. With a year to plan, Fedoryka is excited and optimistic about growing the festival and expanding its role in the community.

To top off the work behind Appaloosa, Scythian is also touring to support their new album, Old Tin Can, and will play some unannounced shows later this fall in DC at the Howard Theatre and the 9:30. Check out their music and mark Labor Day weekend 2016 as booked for Appaloosa! -Jonathan Goodwin

Bodies Be Rivers unveil new video + play Deli CMJ show on 10.17

Always exciting to see a young Brooklyn band grow! We premiered talented mellow poppers Bodies Be Riversfirst video a few months ago, and we just stumbled upon their new one for "Decay," which is a pretty darn good song (edgy too!). This is a particularly welcome surprise because we had already booked the act for our upcoming CMJ show, and seeing them this active is a great sign – two videos in a few months is not an easy thing to pull off for anybody! Come see them at The Living Room on Saturday October 17.

Festival Debut: Gathering of The Tribes at Public Works in San Francisco – 9/13

Posted on:

Editor’s Note: Jonathan Cárdenas of Pow Magazine and San Francisco Great Society put a lot of time into curating this exclusive peek at the upcoming festival, Gathering of the Tribes. This fest celebrates and works to promote and preserve the spirit of psych music in San Francisco. Founder, Dennis Gonzales is very passionate about his work and his efforts to support psych musicians from all over the US. The Bay Area is lucky to have him and the community of amazing promoters and musicians who help keep the spirit and tradition of supportive, familial music and arts communities alive and well. –je

The Gathering Of The Tribes is a festival centralized exclusively in itself and its own breed of musicians and artists. San Francisco has had other festivals in past years, but this one aims to showcase the Bay Area’s breed of psychedelia and its sub-genres, as well as celebrate its musical and artistic ancestry. The name is borrowed, or you could even say revitalized—resurrected—from the Human Be-In that took place in Golden Gate Park, January 14, 1967. This is when Haight-Ashbury became symbolically immortalized as a counter-culture mecca. Our festival celebrates San Francisco’s past and present, and aims to push forward its music and arts in a positive and progressive direction, preserving it for the good of the Bay Area and to keep things groovy.

“We are the San Francisco Preservation Society—God save the Acid Tests, Beatniks and notoriety.”

Hopefully you got that reference. But no, we’re the San Francisco Great Society.

Founder, Dennis Gonzales: I’ve been running Pow Magazine since 1986 and being entrenched in the music community for several years as a social media journalist, I can tell you SF music is not only alive, it is about to explode into a new movement unlike anything seen since the first music scene in 1965. Everything about our Society and our festival is a familial, grass roots effort.  Amoeba is sponsoring the event—they too have promoted it on their Facebook page as well as Twitter. Pow Magazine, Counter Culture Artist Management, and Innerlight Presents are altogether presenting this festival. We have reached out to the best of the Bay, and most have said “yes.”

Clay Andrews of The Spiral Electric and Innerlight Presents: If the festival is comprised of bands that are all touring and far away, and everybody has all their records—that’s great and all; you have to bring people to the event, but at the same time it’s like—don’t just throw a fest where you just bring an import of things because that’s not really doing anything for the local scene. It’s not exposing people to what’s actually happening right now in their backyards.

Derek See SF DJ, musician and music collector: One thing I’m especially excited about is hearing and meeting bands that I don’t know even though they’re local. Because of what i do for a living, i have to get up real early in the morning on weekends—I do go out and see live music when I can, but never as much as I’d like to, whereas at this festival I’m just super stoked to be able to experience and hang out with like-minded folks.

Ghostporn’s last show (as Ghostporn) tomorrow at Harvard & Stone

Posted on:

Duo Tasia Trevino and Kenny Carranza will play their last show as Ghostporn tomorrow, September 7th at Harvard & Stone. After the release of their Godard-inspired single "Vivre Sa Vie", the moody LA outfit have sweated out the summer, helping to close the curtains for Dirt Dress and keeping the Lollipop love strong at Echo Park Rising. Last we heard, they’re still working on an album to be announced later this year, and Buzzband’s Kevin Bronson ventured a guess that the duo will just change their name. I wouldn’t take any chances, though.

Ghostporn will be accompanied by the acoustic singer/songwriter Marnie Herald and ’70 pop revivalist Dustin Lovelis (The Fling). The show is free and the feels will be fresh, so come out. – Ryan Mo

+HIRS+ Attacking the Status Quo at Everybody Hits Sept. 6

Posted on:

Some bands warm to the task incrementally shifting upwards to maximal speed and power. +HIRS+ is not one of those bands. The grindcore outfit unleashes primal revolts in obliterating sonic bursts, attacking the status quo with tireless kit-into-kindling percussion, thrashing guitar that momentarily simmers in a sludgy stomping march, and thundering vocals. It’s a sonic boom that rushes past you demanding that you get on board or get out of the way. The mind-warping, psych/shoegazing experience of Harsh Vibes marinates one’s brain, seeping in with a steady hypnotic sear, occupying a cosmic domain. In support of their latest LP Death & The Internet, Brooklyn trio Advaeta doses out soothing yet gritty shoegaze vibe, tearing through the upper atmosphere with an irritated traffic-jam edge. One Year Anniversary! at Lavender Town Sept. 5

Posted on:

Establishing and maintaining a space where like-minded people can express, perform, and absorb creativity is a complex/ tricky endeavor. DIY spaces are a vital component to a city’s underground and independent music scene. However, these spaces are often short-lived. Tonight the 1-year anniversary of Lavender Town is commemorated with a lineup befitting of celebration including the jarring emotional alt-rock exploits of Mumblr and melodic indie rockers The Mellowells. Abi Reimold with a full band delivers her accustomed clash of musical weather currents, resulting in a beautiful yet turbulent storm. The outlaw hip hop of Cornelius The Third, the funky surf-rock concoction of New Brunswick’s Professor Caveman, the tempered charge of New York punks InCircles, and acoustic folk rocker Curtis Cooper help to ring in the beginning of year 2. Cheers! Lavender Town, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more information.) 6:30pm, $3-$5, All Ages – Michael Colavita
