Audio Visceral @ Jimmy Jazz

Posted on:

There’s always something about a messy garage environment that punctuates the rawness of a punk band’s sound. For Audio Visceral, the spirit of The Ramones is alive and well in their new track “Teen Ranch”. Driving guitars and in your face vocals are essential for any typical old school punk rock band, and these guys aren’t ones to leave it out of their sound. Nevermind the lyrical content of the song, that the title encompasses so clearly, all about the ridiculous things you do as a Teen. Take a listen, how many of these things have you done? While digging for the goods on these Vankleek Hill garage punkers, the first thing I happened across is that lead man Steve Beauchesne owns and operates his own craft brewery – which includes a milk stout- how cool! Anyway, I’m no life coach, but when you’re brewing beer by day and playing in a punk band at night, I’d say you’ve got it all figured out. We’ve all heard the old remark “Don’t quit your day job” when a band wishes to go from amateur status to the big leagues. But for these guys, it’s a win-win situation. Catch Audio Visceral tonight at Jimmy Jazz Guelph! – Chris PJ D

Century Thief @ The Piston

Posted on:

Taking the boom of indie rock and using the oft-underused technique of raw, layered vocals, Century Thief is certainly doing good work in a great way. The six-piece from Toronto are ramping up to their Sept 10 release of their first debut album, “Reverie”, and the first samples from it will certainly put you into a daydream. The backbone of both “Pillar” and “City Banks” are the beautiful vocal harmonies. In Pillar, they hit soaring highs, carried along by the pulsing drums, with horns, strings and woodwinds gently carrying, tastefully layered along with the backup vocals, never losing a single moment of this well-orchestrated (literally) piece. Parts flutter and fade to and from the forefront, creating a beautiful swell that really hits all at once, not making any one single musician the star, but rather the music itself. City Banks waltzes along, with trumpets, violins and flutes all creating a great counterpoint melody. The song builds and builds, while the rock inclinations of the band come to the forefront, crashing and stomping through, creating a great contradiction that pieces together perfectly. The lead vocals portray a raw soul, with the layers upon layers supporting underneath to drive the point straight home, effective in its brief length, not wasting so much as a second of the listeners time. If you love the beauty of ambient-rock, and dig orchestral instruments even more, that these guys are a definite buy. You can catch them on their CD Launch Tour, Sept 10th at The Piston, with a handful of dates following. – Cody Wright

Blinds Releases Debut EP

Posted on:

Sometimes life just kind of… sucks. Luckily, good music is often the lemonade squeezed from a sour situation, and Nashville’s Brian Zaremba is pumping out some bitter-sweet tunes under the handle Blinds.

With the broodiness of bands like The National and pop sensibilities of acts like Broken Social Scene and Beach House, Blinds is putting his own spin on ethereal wave. With dark, experimental melodies cut by ear-catching guitar riffs and deeply personal lyrics, the seven song collection is a perfectly-balanced listening pleasure.

Hear the full EP below and catch Blinds live at fooBar on 9.26 with fauna halo, aave and Lust and the Black Cat. -Caroline Bowman

New Music Video: “Woosh” – NAH

Posted on:

Found on NAH’s latest release Light As Fuck, this video for “Woosh," which premiered at Noisey, is an alarming display of intensity. Interlocking keys and percussion and establishing a tight beat, the track takes a heavy foreboding turn. Watch out for that creepy man in the mask and the juxtaposition of the red strobe interacting with the black & white footage. It may make you feel a little funny inside. (Photo by Christophe Crénel)

The dark pop of Aimee DeBeer at The Deli’s CMJ stages

Posted on:

The dark isn’t necessarily scary for Aimee DeBeer. As heard in the celestial singles, “Oblivion” (streaming below) and “Persephone And The Devil,” off her forthcoming EP ‘Strange Fiction,’ the New York-based singer/songwriter glides across a black sky of cloudy synths and tumbling drums with calm strength. The South Africa-born and Texas-raised musician, with her satin timbre and nocturnal pop, almost inevitably recalls Lana Del Rey in these early singles, but these enigmatically moving songs foreshadow an intrigue all her own. Although no upcoming shows are visible on her Facebook page, Aimee DeBeer’s ‘Strange Fiction’ is reportedly out this month with a tour to follow, and will be performing at The Deli’s CMJ show at the Living Room on 10.17. – Zach Weg

Post-punk group Lunch playing The Know on Sept. 24

Posted on:

Echos of the UK’s ’80s, goth-tinged post-punk are everywhere on "Let Us Have Madness Openly," the full-length debut from Portland’s Lunch. The post-punk quintet channel the likes of Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Cure into a splendidly dark record that offers ten well-crafted and impressively produced tracks. Replete with chillingly bright guitars, brooding and passionate vocals, and a generally haunting air, the album is a compelling debut, and an excellent compilation of post-punk compositions. The band doesn’t shy away from their punk roots either, including short and punchy tracks such as "Bad Cut" and "Brand New Shirt" as well as driving bass lines. Lunch will be performing at The Know on September 24th, and you can check out their track "Not An Ocean" below. – Patrick Wolff
