Commonwealth Choir Debuting New Material at Everybody Hits Sept. 11

Posted on:

Commonwealth Choir has demonstrated a penchant for producing loose yearning songs that move in a tight but not restrictive musical space, blanketing listeners in infectious break-out-of-your-shell mentality and ushering in a get down and sing-along scenario. That bubbly crooning bounce steps up to the plate at Everybody Hits this evening debuting some new material to the repertoire. It will be the band’s last Philly show before they head into the studio. The self-aware surf-punk of Roof Doctor comes with tapes of their album Mobile Home Freedom in hand. The band hits a personal chord with anecdotal lyrics accentuated with instrumentation that opens the windows and allows those tales to stretch. New Jersey trio Night Windows bring a pensive lyrical approach with a rock foundation, while emotively forward psych/folk/pop combo of Oklahoma’s Deerpeople completes a lineup that hits home. Aptly Named LA Psych Fest Next Weekend

Posted on:

The LA Psychfest continues to curate acts that aren’t psychedelic. More power to them.

2015 marks the festival’s fourth year of existence, and also its first year away from the Bootleg Theater (currently accepting submissions for a new wall mural). Live performances by veteran Drab Majesty, Ras G, and singer-songwriter Jenny O. might not fit the genre of psychedelic, but they’ll certainly expand your consciousness. Psych-rock mavens will still leave happy as locals JJUUJJUU and Mr. Elevator and the Brain Hotel join up with Moon Duo, Night Beats,Tomorrows Tulips, The Budos Band, and Earthless. Way more where that came from, with secret guest DJs, a custom poster by Tim Biskup, and live visuals at the Regent Theater and the Echo/Echoplex.

Single-day and two-day tickets still available. Celebrate and expand your consciousness with music and art next weekend, September 19-20 — you don’t have to be on drugs. You do have to be 18 or older. – Ryan Mo

Daytrotter Session – Son Little

As Daytrotter begins to expand beyond the studio walls of Rock Island, you find its session with soul/blues dynamo Son Little, a.k.a. Aaron Livingston, repping Philly in all the right ways at Gentleman of the Road Stopover in Waverly, Iowa at Wartburg College. You’ll also find a lovely cover of Bob Dylan’s "The Man In Me" off 1970’s New Morning and of course, the soundtrack to The Big Lebowski. You can stream the session and download in its entirety HERE (w/membership). Enjoy!

Malandros’ “Milk and Cereal” Holds Up for Nine Tracks That Never Get Soggy

Posted on:

Milk and Cereal, released in May 2015, is the title of the newest album from June 2015 Artist Of The Month: Malandros. The 4-piece, heavy reverb, surfer rock sounds of Milk and Cereal make you want to sit out in your backyard with a piña colada and your feet dipped into hot pink kiddie pool. From the clean chops of the lead guitar to the rolling punch of the bass, Malandros’ new album has some wonderful new tunes for you to soak your head in. The song ‘Hollow Eyes’ makes you want to cruise a little red convertible on some winding roads in the middle of nowhere. This is one to definitely put the top down to, so get a good listen on below.

Artificial Earth Machine’s New Video is All Scrambled-Tech-Porn and Devilish Beats

Posted on:

Before the advent of internet porn and digital cable, pre-pubescent teens and teenagers beginning their descent into sexual deviancy would turn to X-rated channels on the analog cable box to decipher pornographic images through signal distortion. It is in this same vain electronic artist Artificial Earth Machine’s new video for the song ‘Secrets’ is shot in, except swapped in for images of penises and silicone boobies are images of motherboards and other electronic eye candy.

The video for ‘Secrets’ is the first music vid from (The Deli’s Artist of the Month for May) Artificial Earth Machine’s new album Biosphere Simulator, and it was filmed by the man behind the Machine himself, Benjamin Crowley. Crowley’s affinity for laying moody extraterrestrial beats with robotic-like vocals is on full display on the song, and the video itself is alien and somewhat disturbing in Cronenberg fashion.

Don’t take my word for it though, check out the video below and give a listen to Artificial Earth Machine’s trippy experimental electronic album Biosphere Simulator too.

The Sole Pursuit @ Junction City Music Hall

Aggressive-Indie Rock; never heard of such a thing? Then you are missing out! This genre of music is best portrayed by The Sole Pursuit, and if you haven’t already heard this band’s sound, you’d better check them out. With a soft outer skin but a stern soul, their sound is far from mediocre. Their song “All Aside” is a perfect representation of what I’m talking about. With strong guitar leads and killer vocals, this band is going to go far! Wanna see for yourself? Their new debut album "Infinite Regress" is available this Friday, September 11th, 2015. You can bask in the awesomeness of their new album at their release party, Sept 10th @ Junction City Music Hall. -Nick M

Brooklyn rock quartet The Loom plays The Mercury Lounge Sunday (9.13)

Posted on:

There was something almost transcendent about Brooklyn rock band The Loom’s 2011 debut album, ‘Teeth.’ On such intimate, horn-skied tracks as “A Song of Faint Praise” (streaming below) and “The First Freeze,” oaken-voiced frontman John Fanning and company stared into a dark forest but pined for a blissful, pure air. The quartet, like Leonard Cohen on ‘Songs of Leonard Cohen’ or perhaps Walt Whitman in ‘Leaves of Grass,’ foraged for some kind of holy truth on ‘Teeth’ and gathered intensely beautiful songs in the process. At work on its sophomore LP, The Loom plays The Mercury Lounge on Sunday (9.13). – Zach Weg

New Trophy Wife EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Diane Foglizzo and Katy Otto merge in the affecting hardcore punk of Trophy Wife, and they just released a new two-song EP Body Camera/Where is North. “Body Camera” stirs in a grey-clouded melodic anticipation with vocal harmony easing the heart rate as the well-honed instrumental tirade rolls in overhead, crisply shaking the foundation. “Where is North” is a measure of controlled restraint, momentarily demonstrating turbulent potential with a steady hand. You can stream and purchase both tracks below.

Motherfucker, “Confetti”

Posted on:

Turn your speakers to 11 because Motherfucker is bringing the sludge party rock from Athens, GA to wherever you’re doing your next kegstand. And they’re bringing glitter.

Shock value aside, the hair-slinging all-girl trio is taking everything we love about droney noise rock, injecting a sense of humor, then convincing it to stick a fork in a wall outlet. Their latest LP "Confetti," which dropped this summer, is ready to be spun at your next rager in all its blue vinyl glory. (You can pick that up here.)

Give "Confetti" a listen below, and don’t say we didn’t warn you. -Caroline Bowman

Boston Scene Party Launches 3-Day Showcase to Soothe Those Back-to-School Blues

Posted on:

The closing of Boston-area music venues has been a hot topic recently, but Boston music journalism networking group Boston Scene Party has been hard at work, proving that the state of the scene in Boston is still as strong as ever. The group, comprised of a variety of local bloggers, promoters and other music-minded folks, have organized a 3-day, multi-venue event designed to highlight the musical talent and dynamic show spaces that Boston and its nearby cities have to offer.
The show series kicks-off this Saturday, September 12 at Firebrand Saints in Kendall Sq., Cambridge. The lineup (sponsored by: Mutiny on the Microphone, Boston Ska Dot Net, Sound of Boston & Eye Design) for opening night will be Grey Season, Art Thieves, The Wolf Hongos. Not only will the is the music guaranteed to be good, but Firebrand also has some of the best chicken wings I’ve ever had, so you should make sure to grab some during the show.

For more info about Saturday’s show, click here. For updates about the rest of the showcases (lineups, schedules, etc.), check out the Boston Scene Party website.
