Stay for the Long Haul w/Sheer Mag at Second Empire Aug. 5

Posted on:

With riffs that heat up in short explosive dashes meeting up with that rough-and-tumble backend and those vocals that ache and roar in a passionately committed display, that’s what Sheer Mag does. Tonight, as they prepare for a slate of tour dates, they’re at Second Empire, ready to unleash a tenacious, unrelenting brand of garage rock that rips, wails and stays with you for the long haul. A trio of Toronto-based punk bands are also on the docket, including the hardcore blitz of Mocoso, the garage-punk of Tonkapuma, and VCR, whom released a new EP 3D last week. Austin Latin-punk hybrid Detestados round out a lineup that’ll certainly curb that midweek attitude and gear you toward the week’s end. The Sun Lions Have Just the Thing to Calm “Whatever’s on Your Mind”

Posted on:

I could write a few sentences comparing The Sun Lions‘ latest work to Dinosaur Jr., or some other mostly-well-known 90s "indie rock" band, but that’d be too easy. Whatever’s On Your Mind does scream 90s "indie rock", but there’s way more to it than just that. This record has lo-fi grit with hi-fi choruses–an impressive combo of hard-hitting rock n’ roll and pop sensibilities. These tracks are jammed with intricate guitar solos and super-tight band chemistry; the stops and starts these guys are capabale of executing are some real high-caliber stuff. My favorite track is "Sammy", with its slow, drunkenly-plodding guitars that take off into a punk-rockin’, arm-flailin’ riot. The song seems to end just as it began–powerfully trudging to the finish line, but with the addition of a gang-vocal chorus. Sammy’s definitely "got a-hold on me" with this one.

If listening to Whatever’s On Your Mind has you looking for more tunes from The Sun Lions, head over to Zuzu in Cambridge, MA tonight and catch their live set. More info about the show can be found here.

NYC alt rock trio Lost Kingdoms lands first Mercury Lounge show

Posted on:

Back in May, the epically named New York rock trio Lost Kingdoms self-released their debut album, ‘Big Hits.’ As heard on such surging, guitar-based songs as “Steal” and “Scared,” the Terry Edelman-fronted band keenly understands the deeply cathartic possibilities of rock, their almost relentless strums and throttling drums allowing the listener to ponder and potentially purge. Lost Kingdoms aren’t solely ferocious, though; their track “Far” (streaming below), which recalls a mix of the pretty rawness of ‘Pablo Honey’-era Radiohead and R.E.M.’s more rocking moments, is a compelling mix of loud and quiet, blistering chords periodically settling down to tender ones. There is some calm in the storm. Lost Kingdoms played their first The Mercury Lounge show last night (8.4), check out their Facebook page for upcoming shows. – Zach Weg

Dante Elephante urges you to “Never Trust a Junkie”

Posted on:

Dante Elephante’s "Never Trust a Junkie” walks with a peppy surf rock bounce and sneering lyrics, so punk in their assuredness. For this Goleta quintet, suburbia is meant to be stifling (something I can identify with), but “Never Trust A Junkie” is confident, in control, prepared to handle the upcoming madness with a smile. Just prior to the conclusion, the titular advice ends up the most unguarded howl in the song… As calm as Dante Elephante come across here, distrust is pretty crucial advice for both junkies and their enabling junkees.

This tune, along with the rest of the LP, is refined by the psych-fuzz hands of producer Jonathan Rado, one half of Foxygen. Keep an eye out for Dante Elephante’s debut, Anglo-Saxon Summer, out 10/2 from Lolipop Records. In the meantime, check out their previous German Aquatics EP on soundcloud. – Brian J.K. Regan
