Sweet Spirit Team Up with Spoon’s Britt Daniel on Indie Rockin’ New EP

Posted on:

When the fascinating sounds from a band’s new music instantly put a smile on your face and goose bumps on your arms, that’s something very special! It’s too early to tell if its love or lust, but whatever Sweet Spirit and Spoon-member Britt Daniel made me feel with their new collaborative EP (called “Sweet Spirit and Britt Daniel”), I leave wanting more. The EP is one Spoon cover, the classic “Paper Tiger,” and one new soul-grabber with Sweet Spirit taking the lead in “Have Mercy,” both of which are solid pieces of indie rock. Sweet Spirit, a quite quirky Austin crew is really making some heads turn with their fine ability to put on a great show, and their violently catchy tunes. With another 4 song EP release around 6 months ago and vinyl release show happening at Blackheart August 21st; Sweet Spirit has a very sweeeeeet looking future ahead of them, and we all know Britt Daniel is just gonna keep doing his killer thing as always. Check out the ever so fun EP below, and get you some of that indie rock sound to make you want to move your feet a bit!

The Naked Wild Releases Beauty Fools EP

Posted on:

Blue-eyed-cottage-soul, bringing the groove and the vibe. The Naked Wild sure are. Bare, super-clean production, and great energy make for some superb late-night, laid-back party songs you could play all day long. Throwing back some mean guitar licks and air-tight rhythm, the boys make the record sound fun, and like they had fun recording it. “Brett’s Song” has lead singer Nick belting out some fun-rhyme schemes coupled with some real-rock out moments, with brother/lead guitarist Mitch really ripping through the whole tune. “Neighbour” calls back to a 50’s pop-groove, coupled with a modern-ambience that makes you wonder why you haven’t it heard a million times already, as the bassline pops and skips around them. “Rabbit Proof Fence” has some beautiful melodic moments, even a post chorus “la-la-la” that I dare you not to catch yourself singing later. Last but not least “Summer” finds Mitch taking over the mic, with a raspier take on a song that begs to be played as a backdrop to the start of a night-to-be-remembered. The mellow verses and rock-chorus serve as a great close to the short but sweet EP. All in all, Beauty Fools catches the essence of what playing music with friends is supposed to be, fun, and hopefully loud. Make sure to Check out their full EP, and keep up to date with their facebook for up-coming shows. – Cody Wright

Tone Royal Hits the Scene and He’s Already “Rushing Greatness”

Posted on:

If you haven’t heard of Tone Royal yet, now would be a good time to catch up with the artist, as he’s just released his debut album and like the title says, he very much is Rushing Greatness. With a few rap contests and live shows under his belt, Tone Royal has started to take Austin by storm, as have the local Austinites featured on the album like Phillip Wolf and others. As if that wasn’t enough, he’s also studying at UT to become a sports journalist, and acting as co-host on Korey Coleman’s entertainment website doubletoasted.com where he’s better known by his real name, Ray Villarreal. The album, Rushing Greatness, provides a wide variety of styles that at its worst sound like Mac Miller, and at its best, George Watsky. But unlike some of Mac Miller’s work, most (perhaps not all) of Tone Royal’s lyrics are quite meaningful, especially on the songs that are more spoken word than actual rap, like “Want You Back” and the end of “Clark Kent.” If nothing else, Tone Royal’s album proves that great rappers are still out there putting their stuff up online for free, in the hopes that their name will get bigger, so be part of the process and listen below.

Blood Sound Album Release Show at Ortlieb’s Aug. 7

Posted on:

Darkwave trio Blood Sound can provide some shade from the unrelenting heat of summer. The group dishes kinetic, inspiring songs propelled by heart-thumping bass lines that team up with synths that reach past the known perimeters and percussion that steadily ties it together. The collective sound is bathed in the murky unknown of what lies in the cavern of one’s mind, yet the lure to explore that area persists. Tonight at Ortlieb’s, they celebrate the release of their new record Too Much Sun and Not Enough Gloom at the Beach. The Morelings, with a Jeff Zeigler-produced debut LP in the works, perform this evening as a chilling under current lies in wait amid their the hypnotic dream of sound. The cinematic, tension-teasing synth of Nearest and the tormenting calm of chaotic noise that is New York’s Winkie complete a bill that offers a guiding hand, daring you to venture into the darkness. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. Third St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

NYC Shoegazers Gingerlys play Palisades tomorrow (08.08)

Posted on:

The combined forces of Brooklyn and Long Island deliver impressive results with the Gingerlys‘ debut 7" EP “Jumprope,” out on Shelflife records just about one year ago. The title track (streaming) establishes essential band parameters featuring pitch-bended vintage keyboard hooks and dreamy female vocals. Softer story telling verses give way to an angular, syncopated chorus, whose urgency bring to mind fellow Brooklyn dreampoppers Field Mouse. “Summer Cramps” comes quicker via bass and clean guitar at a Cure/”Inbetween Days” pace, before polyphonic synths establish the dominant hook. “Better Hearts” surges forward with similarly sweet vocals and an optimistic feeling that slots closer to The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. The lyrical content suggests all may not be entirely well, as they’ve “seen better hearts,” and “you don’t know me.” Closing track “Set You Off” evokes early era (pre Loveless) My Bloody Valentine with tandem male/female vocals and a light, airy vibe. Acoustic guitar driven, keyboards provide traditional pad backing, with electric guitar establishing the melodic hook. Gingerlys play tomorrow (Saturday August 8) at Palisades in Brooklyn on a stacked bill that also features Pill, Honduras and BAMBARA. – Dave Cromwell

Chamber folk collective Cuddle Magic plays Baby’s All Right on 08.31

Posted on:

The Brooklyn and Philly based, ten-piece chamber pop folk collective Cuddle Magic released their latest album "Info Nympho" way back in 2011. The record doesn’t feel that old though, and as a matter of fact we like it so much we are getting impatient for a new release. The band’s clever lyrics are beautifully phrased on top of dreamy orchestral pop arrangements, with tasteful male/female harmonies floating in the background. The result is music that is as comforting as it is moving, on both an emotional and physical level. In one of our favorite tracks, "Expectations," they swoon: “My expectations f**k me over/ and then my inclination is to do it again” Go check out Cuddle Magic at Baby’s All Right on Monday August 31st, they will be playing alongside Chaos Chaos and Margaret Glaspy. Check out their single release from 2014 :An Extra Life," streaming below. – Lauren Schechter

Deradoorian’s newest track “Komodo” is a neo-traditional masterpiece

Posted on:

Angel Deradoorian’s bass, keys and vocals have notably lifted the Brooklyn-based experimental outfit Dirty Projectors and Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks, not to mention the songs she’s collab’d with Vampire Weekend, Flying Lotus, Matmos, and on. She’s oft seen live performing the duties of two or more musicians, a real testament to her skill as musician.

Her new project, christened Deradoorian, is a several-year long craft first received in 2009’s Mind Raft EP. It was lauded by tastemakers for its sensuality and adept layering. Almost six years later, the fruits of her labor are ripe for the picking. Listen to Deradoorian’s newest track "Komodo", off her debut album The Expanding Flower Planet. Organs, clavichords, brass patches and vocal overdubs join, depart, and reconcile in this cautionary song about the komodo dragon fusing worldly styles with harmonic artifice.

The Expanding Flower Planet is set to release August 21 via Anticon Records. Get a live taste on September 22nd when she performs at the Echo with Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier. – Ryan Mo, photo credit: Bennet Perez
