Suspicious Light playing Rough Trade on 09.08, working on new album

Posted on:

Suspicious Light is a three-piece indie rock outfit from Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The three tracks they’ve released thus far are a collection of home recorded (but for the most part competent sounding) melancholic, reverb-soaked, indie-rock. The latest release from the band is "Tell Her Everything," a 5-minute long track about regret that is steeped in early indie-rock influences (Adam Franklin of the UK legendary band Swervedriver is featured on guitar). Our favorite track though is "Mistakes Were Made," (check it out below) which is vaguely reminiscent of that gorgeously blue masterpiece that’s the Doves’ debut LP "Lost Souls." The group’s first record is currently in the works, and their next appearance will be at Brooklyn’s Rough Trade on September 8th. – Patrick Wolff

Brooklyn singer/songwriter Millie Mason’s poignantly pretty ‘Here On Up’ EP

Posted on:

With a tender yet firm voice and assured guitar work, Brooklyn-via-Knoxville singer/songwriter Millie Mason makes loneliness beautiful on her latest EP ‘Here On Up.’ “That could’ve been nice,/You can see me twice,/Now I’m not around,” the young musician sings on opener “In Town,” her invisibility hitting the listener with quiet power. As heard on other songs such as “Not Lonely” (video streaming below), Mason subtly portrays the intense pain of solitude, of not just being alone but feeling so, and does it both truthfully and compassionately. Listen to “Not Lonely,” and watch its icily warm music video (Filmed during the New York 2015 blizzard) below.– Zach Weg

Storm the Gates & Empty the Reserves w/Legendary Divorce at Everybody Hits Aug. 9

Posted on:

Let that pent up agitation loose when Legendary Divorce steps up to the plate at Everybody Hits. Converging members of Ladder Devils, The Starting Line and The Minor Times enacts a grimey grunge-punk combination with raw emotions at its core as searing guitar and pouncing percussion stir up that cauldron in one’s gut, giving rise to pressure-defusing, spirited vocals. It’s coming at you hard and fast, storming the gates and emptying the reserve in the process. The sludgy steamroller of a hardcore outfit The Cloth and Philly-via-Virginia punk quartet Left & Right are also on the card. Delaware trio Worth, who will release a new EP this month, lead things off. Everybody Hits, 529 West Girard Ave., 6pm, All Ages – Michael Colavita

On the Go w/The Tough Shits at Boot & Saddle Aug. 8

Posted on:

A three-pronged, locally-flavored punk billing hits Boot & Saddle tonight. Retro-fitted for that classic, catchy, brimming-with-energy vibe that spills over into the audience, The Tough Shits capture a chilled-out yet constantly-on-the-go garage sound. Their playful partying injects enough unfiltered attitude to create a raw edge, balancing things out with that bubbly surfing backdrop – crisp and yet still loose in a way that fits one’s weekend needs. Upon rolling up to Boot & Saddle this evening, they’ll be joined by the fuzzed-out, sprinting-out-of-the-blocks punk of Cheerbleeders, while the snarling, full-steam-ahead, melodically balanced tunes of The Prisoners get things started. Them Vibes Release “Mamma’s Gotta Secret;” Headline Tomato Art Fest

Posted on:

Them Vibes recently dropped their new single "Mamma’s Gotta Secret," in anticipation of the September 8th release date of their EP. The single is just as soaked in swampy 70’s nostalgia as their previous work, and almost evoke a little Kings of Leon in the hook. Richard Dodd has come on board as producer for this album, to lend the same expertise he has contributed to previous clients that include, but are not limited to, Tom Petty, George Harrison, The Civil Wars, Kings of Leon (ah-HA!), Counting Crows and Wilco. We’re sure he had a the same field day channeling their down’n’dirty cheekiness that we’ve had every time we’ve caught their show, one of which is THIS Saturday, August 8th, when they headline Tomato Arts Fest. With absolutely no cover to get over to the Xfinity Main Stage at 8pm, there’s little reason not to get out and enjoy some of our favorite Nashville carousers. In the meantime, take a listen to “Mamma’s Gotta Secret.” –Terra James-Jura

New Fries @ The United Steel Workers Hall

Posted on:

There’s nothing worse than when your extra value meal comes with old fries. Anyway, Toronto band, New Fries in all honesty…they might be insane. Listening to their 2014 EP Fresh Face Forward, their tunes are quick, rockin’ and trippy with most of the songs timing out under 2 minutes. The bass lines are groovy and the drums hold the fort, but it’s the vocals that really stand out. Although imposing at first, I found myself really interested in what the messages were behind the jumble of madness, that is the New Fries. Keep it fresh, indulge in some New Fries, They’ll be playing at the United Steel Workers Hall on Saturday August 8 –Kris Gies

PONY @ The Silver Dollar Room

Posted on:

There seems to be an influx of reverb-heavy power-pop these days. That’s no knock, either. It’s hard not to be suckered into the swirling layers of tender vocals and hook-heavy garage rock. Something about it just screams summertime. Toronto’s PONY is no exception. Their recent Crushed EP depicting a marker- coloured pop can on the cover is symbolic of a more innocent time when summer romances were as fragile as, well, a pop can. Such is the subject matter on each of the four tracks. Sometimes it’s harder determining what is more fragile, the guitars or the vocals pleading for lost love. In this territory of indie, Alvvays and Best Coast are the true frontrunners, but PONY are not far behind at all. Catch them at The Silver Dollar Room on August 8th. – Chris PJ D
