Wildwood Revival, Athens, GA 8.29-30

Posted on:

Dubbed "The festival for people who don’t like festivals," Wildwood Revival is stripping down the summer fest to create a refreshing, intimate, homespun cultural experience.

Nestled in the rolling hills outside of Athens, GA, Wildwood Revival will feature local food and goods vendors, camping on a historic 30-acre farm, a Saturday night dance party and, of course, amazing live music. The lineup blurs the country/rock line with acts like American Aquarium, Water Liars, Tall Tall Trees and Nashville’s very own Blackfoot Gypsies

Give the bands a listen in the Wildwood Revival playlist below. Keep an eye out for our review, and we hope to see you there! -Caroline Bowman

Indie rock trio The Can’t Tells playing Rough Trade this Friday (8.21)

Posted on:

Brooklyn band The Can’t Tells have been delivering punchy indie rock since around 2006. Since their formation in Boston, they’ve relocated to Brooklyn and matured their sound (some of their best singles streaming below), featuring a DIY LP release in 2013. Their music hears influences of power-pop, punk, and rock, while still being dancey and fun. Their shows are known to get a little wild (with a few band injuries on record), so prepare yourself for what’s sure to be a great time at Rough Trade this Friday night (8.21). – Sam O’Hara

OKAY KAYA’s latest video: Clehched Teeth

Posted on:

We were literally entranced by OKAY KAYA‘s video for "Damn, Gravity," when she unveiled it earlier this year. The Norwegian, NYC based songwriter obviously knows how to make simple melodies and images become larger than life, through her intense delivery and evocative lyrics. She’s prooving that once again with her new video for single "Clenched Teeth," entirely shot in Tokyo. Wondering when she’ll be playing NYC next…

New Marietta LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Marietta’s new LP As It Were is now available for streaming and purchase below. The quartet creates a rousing brand of melodic, incisive pop punk. While the tight instrumentation simmers and rushes forward, lyrically the songs capture a personal reverberation. The album was recorded at Sleepless Sound Studios, Studio A & C at Drexel University, and various other places. It was also mixed by Travis Arterburn and Jake Ewald, and mastered by Ian Farmer.

Rhetoric Wallace Leading the Charge at KFN Aug. 18

Posted on:

As Philly’s DIY music community continues to be pumping on all cylinders, our too-often-neglected indie hip-hop artists still struggle to find their place in this burgeoning music scene. It can be a daunting task to draw crowds for hip-hop events, especially with bills that lack marquee names, who come with plenty of radio play behind them. Tonight at Kung Fu Necktie, you’ll find a stacked homegrown lineup of wordsmiths, who are far from household names. Leading the charge will be the no frills, all-heart flow of Rhetoric Wallace. The young, up-and-comer has been flying under the radar, but he’s been using this time wisely refining his craft. In the days where marketing hype and social media beefs/friends playing too large of a part in defining your success, take the time search out artists who are pounding the pavement for the right reasons. Rhetoric Wallace will be banding together this evening with likeminded brethren Torito, Teef, Darko The Super, and Johann Sebastian. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $5, 21+ – Q.D. Tran

New Track: “Ideal Decanter” – Dogs on Acid

Posted on:

The wait for Dogs on Acid’s self-titled debut (arriving August 28 via Jade Tree) is almost over. Their latest single “Ideal Decanter” presents the surprising disappoint of reaching a goal that was meant to reap positive rewards. That reevaluating scenario is fleshed out via raucous guitars and a thick backend thrust, shaking the preconceptions loose.

The Meaning of Life performing at Rough Trade on Saturday (8.22)

Posted on:

NYC dream-pop act, The Meaning of Life, is just as quirky as its name suggests. Citing David Lynch, The Wheel of Fortune, and ’60s and ’80s pop as their major influences, the group is  making pop music that refuses to take pop so seriously. Earlier this year, they released the full length ‘Diamonds & Junk Food,’ with tracks that lean towards either pop or shoegaze (listen to their pop sound below). They’re different and they know it, but that’s what makes them so fun. They’ll be playing this Saturday (08.22) at Rough Trade for Pancakes and Whiskey’s birthday bash. Sam O’Hara

Prism Pipe presents live visual music featuring retrofuturist [PHYSICS]

Posted on:

Itching for a sober trip? Pehrspace is hosting PRISM PIPE, a visual music event curated every third Monday of the month by The Current Sea and Screaming Claws. Since last year, PRISM PIPE has enjoyed moderate success as one of the few audio/visual showcases persisting in LA’s DIY scene — notable artists include: Electric Soundbath, GreyGhost, and Earth Pitch.

This Monday night, [PHYSICS] will be creating stereophonic conjurations live with video art by The Current Sea and Ang Wilson. Since 2011, [PHYSICS] has championed analog atmospherics and retrofuturist synthwave, even venturing into some vaporwave grooves in 2013’s "Not Even Real" EP. His newest album Only Forever is a straight immersive sound art experience, dropping listeners into modular valleys, oscillating caverns, and pulsating cybernetic organisms. Pair this with tagteam visualizations of digital artists Brian Griffith + Sarah Zucker and Ang Wilson (Electric Soundbath) and you have one of the LA’s most pleasurable sensory overloads for the summer. Seriously; you don’t want to miss this.

Audiences will be promptly saturated with color and sound at 9:00 pm for one solid hour, so come early TONIGHT (doors open at 8:30 pm). Listen to "Only Forever", the first track off [PHYSICS]’ album below. – Ryan Mo

From Alberta Cross, Dicey Hollow is born: new EP out + live at Music Hall of W’burg on 09.14

Posted on:

Dicey Hollow is the new project of resilient, East London to Brooklyn transplant, Petter Ericson Stakee and, as the Facebook page states, “his friends”. The man was half of NYC’s duo country rock Alberta Cross. As it always happens after an important separation, Petter had a chance to reinvent himself – in this case musically – which led to the project’s upcoming EP “Dicey Hallow”. From it, he recently unveiled “Howl At The Moon” (streaming) a song filled with long, twangy guitar solos accompanied by Stakee’s calm and steadfast voice. Alberta Cross will be performing at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on September 14th. – Lauren Schechter

FYF Fest 2015 preview: much-beloved local festival continues to feature some of LA’s best talent

Posted on:

Now in its 12th iteration, FYF Fest should no longer be considered the underdog of all Summer music festivals. And yet, even as it has continued to grow in both size and scope, and put some top dollar on some of today’s most sough-out acts in indie music right now, a sense of familiarity continues to punctuate the festival’s old roots. I mean, another year, another Simian Mobile disco appearance, right?

Though we’re excited for some of this year’s acts making their first appearance (Frank Ocean, Jesus & Mary Chain, Belle & Sebastian) and others returning after having considerably raised their profile (Purity Ring, Death Grips, Dinosaur Jr.), what still makes FYF an exclusively local affair is how it continues to support and foster local talent. And this year’s undercard isn’t any different, with a slew of bludgeoning acts who will be performing at more intimate levels of interaction. So get there early, because as the festival has proved throughout the years, it’s that there’s no shortage of quality regardless of the time slot.

Below are some of our top local picks for FYF this year:

1. Frank Ocean: That new album should be coming soon, right? Though the Long Beach native has kept mum on any details regarding the follow-up to his breakthrough album Channel Orange, we know it’s coming soon. FYF is guaranteed to be the first place where he’ll preview some of his new material, and who knows, maybe he’ll drop that new album prior to his performance. Fingers crossed.

2. Goldroom: I have to admit: the first thing that comes to my mind when I read the name Goldroom is having a Happy Hour tequila shot with a cold PBR on the side. I’m not sure if he got his name from the famed Echo Park dive bar, but what I do know is that producer Josh Legg comes up with straight-up bangers that should get attendees dancing as the sun begins to set. His sun-dappled electro-pop precedes the more abstruse sounds of Shlohmo on Saturday night, another LA-based act whose impenetrable and more cerebral electronica should also not be missed.

3. JUNK: The retro-fitted indie rockers are not only opening this weekend’s ceremonies, but they’re also releasing a 7” inch via the festival’s own imprint. Prepare for a pulverizing 30 minutes of highly-charged tunes with a tinge of self-deprecation that evoke the likes of classic ramshackle rock n’ roll bands like The Replacements and The Damned.

4. Kevin Morby: The former Woods bassist/Babies co-founder has made a name for himself throughout the years with his outstanding solo material. His albums teeter between introspective folk and mellowed-out roots, with melodies that seem lackadaisical but are held together with a taut technicality to them. It’s the perfect match for his 2:35 Saturday slot.

5. Joyce Manor: A band that almost needs no introduction, the Torrance natives are no strangers to the festival. Expect another rousing set from a band who continues to follow through in pursuit of the perfect two minute pop-punk song.

And that’s just a small fraction of all the acts playing this year. For more info on this year’s set times, head on over to FYF’s official website. – LA Deli Staff
