LOVE, OAKLAND: The Seshen’s September Residency at Leo’s

Posted on:

We’re pleased to share that the Bay Area based band, The Seshen will be hosting a Tuesday night residency at Leo’s in Oakland for the month of September. We know the fall is a few weeks away but it’s good always to know what’s coming your way as the seasons change!

It’s no secret: The Seshen loves Oakland. Not only is it the band’s home base, it’s their community and serves as the inspiration for their ever-evolving, celebrated sound. So, when Leo’s asked if they’d like to curate and host a Tuesday night residency this September, the band was quick to jump at the chance to give a little back to the place they call home.

The Love, Oakland residency features four shows where The Seshen teams up with other notable Bay Area bands to share the bill. Each night will have its own distinct flavor and surprises, but there is a common thread throughout: every show has been designed to celebrate Oakland’s vibrant music scene and diverse culture.

PDX Pop Now! all-ages music festival returns this weekend

Posted on:

Portland’s annual festival celebrating the local music scene, PDX Pop Now! returns this weekend for three days of all-ages adventure at Audiocinema (under the Hawthorne Bridge). Check out the full schedule here, plus The Deli’s top picks for the weekend below:

Balto: Daniel Sheron’s psych-Americana project is lyrically driven and big and melodic. His first record Call It By Its Name is a diverse mix of country, folk, and pop that sounds like Blitzen Trapper’s love child with a dash of outlaw thrown in for good measure. Catch them at 6:40 p.m. on Friday.

Golden Hour: Portland’s tender-hearted garage group Golden Hour are like the younger sibling in a cool band that you never had but always wanted. Their catchy, relatable lyrics and upbeat, declarative songs will linger with you long after you hear them–in the best way possible. Don’t miss their set at 4:10 p.m. on Saturday.

Hands In: Bedroom psych favorite Erick Crosby brings his dreamy tunes to the stage Saturday evening at 6:50 p.m. Hands In provides the perfect soundtrack to your angst, your dance mood, or general party attitude.

The Last Arful, Dodgr: A new voice in the Portland hip hop scene, Dodgr brings a fresh sound to the festival and holds it down for lesser-represented genres in the local music scene. Don’t miss her breakout set at 6:10 p.m. on Saturday.

The Stops: These self-described "five girls playing punk" do not mess around. Their fast, hard, sorry-not-sorry songs are sure to get the crowd moving at this weekend’s festival. Representing the all-ages scene, their debut album Nameless Faces is a dirtier, grittier version of local favorites Summer Cannibals. Get down to Audiocinema early on Saturday, The Stops play at 2:10 p.m.

These and many more perform Friday through Sunday at Audiocinema. The music festival includes a street fair, beer garden, and plenty of opportunities to get immersed in the Portland music scene.

Pretend with Vasudeva and 100 Onces at Bonnerhaus

Posted on:

If you didn’t get to see Pretend‘s stellar performance during Young Lovers’ residency at Pehrspace, know this: Nick Reinhart was grooving pretty damn hard to their music, and Pehrspace hit capacity before the encore.

Now that you know you missed out on something big, here’s a second shot to catch the enigmatic musicians: along with guitar-drum mathcore duo 100 Onces, Pretend will support touring New Jersey trio Vasudeva, whose last album Life in Cycles will definitely connect with fans of upbeat mathy post-rock like Enemies, The Bulletproof Tiger, Dios Trio. Then again, if you know of such bands, you’re probably very familiar with these three and are wondering how you didn’t find out about this earlier.

Presented by Sound of a Vacuum, the show is happening at North Hollywood’s Bonnerhaus, doors open at 8pm. Vasudeva are moving through California for the first time, and tonight they’re playing in Fresno at Frank’s Place/Star Palace with The Unending Thread. You can still catch them on Saturday in Anaheim’s The Eclectic Room with locals like Hollow Ran, Panoramic, and Twentytwofourteen. – Ryan Mo

Villa Coola

Posted on:

It was almost a year ago to the day the we share the debut EP from Gehring Miller (aka Villa Coola). Late last month Miller, along with Sip City Records, released his first full-length as Villa Coola. The album continues Miller’s exploration of alt-folk and falsetto that is reminiscent of the dream-like acoustic moments of Dinosaur Jr.

Midnight Mantics, “Mixtape Vol. 1”

Posted on:

If we pressed the eject button on The DeLorean’s cassette deck, a mixtape of Billy Idol, The Cars, Duran Duran and Nashville-based Midnight Mantics would come popping out. The biggest mystery: What year was it made?!

The chill wave duo, made up of Stacy Hogan and Adam McCants, have taken their mutual love of all things John Hughes and created an authentic, danceable and relevant debut album that could easily be the soundtrack to any 80s teen flick. "Mixtape Vol. 1," dropping in September,  is stacked with drum machines, dreamy synth, echoey vocals and catchy hooks that will have you reaching for the Aquanet.

Queens songwriter on the rise: Matt Sucich plays Joe’s Pub on 08.21

Posted on:

Intriguingly combining splendor and ruggedness, defeat and possibility, Queens-born singer/songwriter Matt Sucich’s latest single “Lay Low” (streaming below) is delightfully poignant. It’s the ever kindred story of someone trying to do good and offer love to another but constantly getting beaten down, for reasons even a god wouldn’t know. Gloom isn’t Sucich’s game, though, as his spectral voice and whimsical background production illuminate “Lay Low” with rays of hope and even bashful merriment. Ultimately, the burgeoning musician is just a guy expressing himself, the hurt and the joy. After last night’s show at the Mercury Lounge Matt is scheduled to perform at Joe’s Pub on August 21. – Zach Weg

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best roots songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

NoMBe’s reveals haunting new single “Miss Mirage”

Posted on:

NoMBe, the nom de plume of one Noah McBeth, first caught the attention of many with his breakthrough single "California Girls". It introduced the world to an artist with a quietly confident demeanor, his smooth vocal inflection perfect for the track’s loungy psychedelic mood. Now he’s revealed the second single off his promising second EP Mood Indigo, "Miss Mirage", an austere and seductive listen with a dreamy, prop-pop flair that wanders about idly in a delirious state.

NYC Buzz Alert: Devyn Rose releases ‘Stellar’ EP

Posted on:

Claiming as her two biggest influences “Bone Thugs N Harmony & Whitney Houston,” Hatian artist Devyn Rose is going deep into shoegazing ballet shoes. There’s a definite 90’s synth lushness to her tracks reminiscent of early Bobby Brown and Roxette, but her delivery is snappy and crisp. A model, dancer, and multi-instrumentalist with a #1 Billboard hit under her belt, Miss Rose has a lot going for her. Her silky voice and provocative lyrics make for an aural assault that speaks to the new generation of braniac b-boys and b-girls, and her new video for “Cops x The Jury” (streaming) is a call to arms fit for the most raucous club dance floor. – BrokeMc
