NJ psych slackers Chimes plan August minitour

Posted on:

Chimes is the kind of band that’s loud and proud. Their sound is a self-proclaimed "slackedelia," but with much more attitude than the moniker lets on. Their 2014 EP (streaming below), appropriately titled ‘Psychic Slack,’ opens up with the apathetic declaration: "I don’t care what you say, it doesn’t matter anyway." That aura of indifference is exactly what makes this feisty, genre-bending band interesting – although we wouldn’t recommend dating them. They played Shea Stadium on July 9th with Weed Houds, Bueno, and Big Huge, in preparation for an August east coast minitour with Philly’s Seismic Thrust. – Sam O’Hara

B a r l e a u x, “Fire:

Posted on:

B a r l e a u x emerged onto the scene last year with her debut LP Hillary Barleaux. A natural vagabond and adventurer, B a r l e a u x releases “Fire,” a track with a steady build and a sweeping arrangement. “’Fire’ is about leaning into that dark side when explaining to someone that you have problems with commitment.”

"Fire" is a smokey, trumpet-led tune, with dream pop undertones and coy vocals. The track is a transition between B a r l e a u x’s folk roots and her affinity for electronic sounds, showcased in her upcoming EP to be released on A f t e r n o o n s m o d e l i n g this fall.

New Track: “Song for Ari” – Cyberbully Mom Club & Announce a “Temporary Hiatus”

Posted on:

Unfortunately, Cyberbully Mom Club are having "some hard times," and have announced that they are going on a "temporary hiatus." However, the group has left us with the single, “Song for Ari,” once again demonstrating the band’s ability to encapsulate a zoomed-in personal sound that soaks in a beautiful, descriptive, lyrical honesty, laid out over minimal instrumentation. Ugh…we are obviously sadden about the latest news from one of our recent favorite Philly acts. And yes, Cyberbully Mom Club have also dropped off the bill on July 15 at The Mothership with Radiator Hospital, Adult Mom, and Lady Queen Paradise.

A Deli NYC Premiere: Lexi Scherr’s ‘All Take’

Posted on:

Hailing from Chicago and calling NYC home, Lexi Scherr has recently released two new singles that showcase her edgy musical talent – we are streaming them both here. The first one, ‘Ready Aim Fire,’ is an upbeat pop song that takes us back to the days when Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush were having an affair (which was apparently both musical and sexual). Cheesy fake horns screaming "80’s electro-pop!!!" introduce a retro electro-rock arrangement that propells this very well produced track chock full of hooks and well orchestrated harmonies. Second single ‘All Take’ – which we are premiering below – is a more aggressive, clangy blues-rock tune that flirts with Eastern influences while bordering on the industrial. This makes it in part reminiscent of what Suzanne Vega tried in ‘99.9°,’ only more bluesy and more in your face. The Deli welcomes any attempt to innovate traditional genres, and this is one that deserves attention. You can see Lexi live at Piano’s upstairs stage on August 5th.

Conversations Opening for Little Tybee at Bourbon & Branch July 14

Posted on:

Conversations may have dropped the discussions with their "enemies" and directed their energy towards the much-needed after-school music program, Rock to the Future. However, husband and wife combo, Josh and Jessica Craft, still enjoy churning out feel-good, indie-pop ditties, like the ones found on their latest project’s debut release Totally Redeem Yourself, which was recorded with Joe Reinhart at Headroom Studios. They’ll be opening for Atlanta folk outfit Little Tybee this evening at Bourbon & Branch. Also helping to bring a bit of sunshine on this cloudy day will be whimsical folk-pop trio The Extraordinaires. Bourbon & Branch, 705 N. 2nd St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Video Premiere: An Intimate Evening with Michael Shaw – Now You Know

Posted on:

We’re proud to premiere the film noir, short film style music video for Now You Know from the San Francisco based rock musician, An Intimate Evening with Michael Shaw. Now You Know is a track from Shaw’s 2015 album, This is It which was independently released last month. The music video is shot in a thick, stark black and white tone and tells the story of the indiscretions of a young priest. The video is not your usual independent music video, choosing to embed itself within an "era ambiguous" plot of the most traditional taboo, but that’s why we like it.

"The lyrics for "Now You Know" address the struggle for truth and honesty in a relationship, and the resulting fallout from such candor. The song chronicles me coming to terms with someone who had me on a pedestal.

With the video, we wanted to capture the tension of the lyrics in the song, while not being literal with the narrative. Working with the director, Ian Colon, and the producer, Jamie Shaw, we arrived at something heavily inspired by The Maltese Falcon and Lolita. The video was shot at some of the most iconic locations in the San Francisco Bay Area – a private dock in Sausalito, St. Hilary’s in Tiburon and the streets of North Beach.

While shooting the hotel scene in the early hours of the morning in North Beach, our hazer set off the hotel’s fire alarm. So at one in the morning, the whole hotel was evacuated. The crew threw a blanket over the hazer and took off down the street with it under their arms before anybody caught on. We found ourselves out in the street with about 100 tourists in their pajamas and the SFFD rushing up to the hotel in two fire trucks, with sirens blaring. So, who set off their fire alarm that night? Now you know.”Michael Shaw

The Naked Wild @ the Rivoli

Posted on:

The Naked Wild is a folk/indie rock band out of Toronto. I think it’s also the website I was watching late last night…but that’s a different story. Their tunes are pretty chilled out but they can fire it up when they have to. They have a bunch of live tunes available for stream on their soundcloud. The first tune I listened to was "Neighbour". The acoustic rhythm guitar gets you in a very campfire like setting. The lead licks over top bring you to the point when your buzz kicks in and you’re ready to drift away. The walking bassline keeps the party going and the drums are thumpin away giving you reason to stomp. So that pretty much sums up most camping trips…in the wild….naked. Canadian folk rock for sure. I’m interested in hearing what they come up with in the studio. The Naked Wild play the Rivoli on July 16th.-Kris "Big City" Gies

Music Video Review: “Spirit Cold” by Tall Heights

Posted on:

In an age of gimmicky music videos, Tall Heights’ beautiful live-performance video of their new track, "Spirit Cold", is as refreshing as a glass of ice water on a hot summer day. In a song both contemplative and hopeful, Paul Wright’s cello is a lovely musical anchor that allows Tim Harrington’s acoustic guitar riffs to dance and soar while remaining as intricately wound as their harmonious duets. The duo will release their latest album, Holding On, Holding Out, in October – see them live at The Sinclair in Cambridge on October 4th.

Club Violaine Show 7.14 with Plush, Pardoner, Young Lovers, and SHEER

Posted on:

San Francisco’s PLUSH and pardoner are making rounds on their first tour together through California, and tomorrow they’re hitting up Club Violaine’s M-Club in Boyle Heights tomorrow, July 14. Enjoy the comforts of Sonic Youth-inspired noise-punk (pardoner), a rarity in Los Angeles, and 50’s-reminisicent pop churned through fuzz and reverb aka sob rock (PLUSH).

The night will be supported by rising locals: post-rock group Young Lovers and doomgazers SHEER. If you’ve been to any of their recent shows you know how expansive these two can get. So you’ll probably want to bring earplugs.

First band is on at 9 PM, 21+ venue and five bucks a pop. Get a taste of PLUSH and pardoner below, and gaze responsibly. – Ryan Mo
